A Survey Of Quality Awareness Within The Commercial Printing Industry, Craig Eric Veconi May 1989

A Survey Of Quality Awareness Within The Commercial Printing Industry, Craig Eric Veconi

Theses

Quality issues are receiving increasing attention from many industries. The commercial printing industry is showing similar concern. Quality is often used as a marketing tool. This thesis surveys the top management of American commercial printing companies on their awareness of, practice of, and benefit from currently recognized quality control concepts and methods. The National Association of Printers and Lithographers assisted in the survey by providing design and mailing services. The survey mailing went to the membership of N.A.P.L. and to an additional fifteen hundred commercial printing companies. The responses to this survey were compared to similar surveys conducted in 1987 …

Computer Generated Surface Design And Structural Weave, Elaine M. Polvinen

Theses

"Computer Generated Structural Weave and Surface Design," the title itself is immensely broad and covers a very large area of study. The question asked at the beginning of this search was "What are the possibilities for textile design / fiber arts as far as the computer is concerned?" During the course of graduate school education, opportunities presented themselves to work on many different computer systems. Experimentation and creation of fiber art or surface design patterns have been produced on the Apple IIe, Artronic, Genigraphic, IBM, and Macintosh computers. Structural weave fiber art pieces have been designed on the Apple / …

Floralware, Lori Mills May 1989

Floralware, Lori Mills

Theses

Prior to my graduate studies, I had only worked in stoneware and porcelain. The firing temperature of the clays restricted the forms I could make and the color palette that was available. The discovery of earthenware clay and the multitude of colors available at low-fire temperatures allowed me to step into a new realm of possibilities in both form and decoration .

Points Of Hue, Andrea Kundin Apr 1989

Points Of Hue, Andrea Kundin

Theses

My intent in this thesis is to display the visual capabilities of the computer as a tool to assist fabric designers, interior designers and consumers in a growing and demanding market. These ideas evolved out of my own personal interest in two seemingly different yet historically related fields, computers and textiles, and my feeling that there might be an obvious solution to the somewhat complex problem of visualizing surface pattern, texture and color in relation to the environment.

Teaching Intervention: "At Risk" Students Enabling Them To Succeed In School, Jeanie Harper Apr 1989

Teaching Intervention: "At Risk" Students Enabling Them To Succeed In School, Jeanie Harper

Theses

During the 1988-1989 school year, a teacher intervention program with "at risk" students was implemented at Wentzville High School. The project involved ten ''at risk" students who were currently enrolled in a reading class. These subjects were in grade nine through twelve and all had been labeled "at risk" by the district . The criteria used was several failed courses, excessive absences, repeated behavioral problems and a general inability to get along with their educators as well as their peers . An attempt was made to see if teacher intervention could help these students succeed in school by improving their …

A Corporate Identity Package For The Technical Association Of The Graphic Arts: A Methodological Approach, Charles G. Kuhn Apr 1989

A Corporate Identity Package For The Technical Association Of The Graphic Arts: A Methodological Approach, Charles G. Kuhn

Theses

The design problem concerning my thesis proposal was rather simple and clear-cut, the solution was certainly going to be more complex. the challenge for me was to create and develop a new organization identity for the Technical Association of the Graphics Arts (TAGA), an organization concerned and dedicated to the science and technology of the graphic arts. The original identity of TAGA lacked visual excitement, vitality and, above all, a cohesive and consistent appearance as it was used on printed applications. It also lacked a mark or symbol appropriate for an organization dealing in the field of graphic arts research …

Finite Element Analysis Of Embedded Blood Vessel Mechanics, I-En Lin Apr 1989

Finite Element Analysis Of Embedded Blood Vessel Mechanics, I-En Lin

Theses

Cardiac pump function is closely linked to myocardial oxygen supply during the cardiac cycle. Variations in cardiac output must be met with concurrent shifts in tissue blood flow if changing myocardial oxygen requirements are to be satisfied. Of particular importance is the adequate perfusion of the left ventricular myocardium. Experimental evidence indicates that some ninety percent of left ventricular oxygen demand is generated during systolic contraction of the myocardium. Paradoxically, blood flow measurements in the left coronary artery suggest minimal systolic perfusion. The asynchronous, phasic character of left coronary blood flow and myocardial oxygen demand has prompted much research into …

Conscious / Unconscious, David M. Cravenho Mar 1989

Conscious / Unconscious, David M. Cravenho

Theses

I am an artist who uses clay as a medium. My work deals primarily with my personal past. It is reflective of the past history of ceramic sculpture, and the work of a number contemporary sculptors. My monumental totemic masked figures express the culmination of past personal experiences, and deal more specifically with one date and event. The sculptures work universally as figures, and the viewer gains a sense of permanence from the pieces. My work related to African, Haniwa, and Egyptian sculpture. There is a sense of the culture of the people who made them, and a mysterious quality, …

An Investigation Of New Methods To Improve The Accuracy Of Modern Color Spectrophotometers, Kelvin H. Petersen Feb 1989

An Investigation Of New Methods To Improve The Accuracy Of Modern Color Spectrophotometers, Kelvin H. Petersen

Theses

A study into the use of reflecting tiles to determine spectrophotometric errors and the corresponding correction values was accomplished. A method was developed to calculate the wavelength scale accuracy (out to a wavelength error of 5nm) using the inflection points of reflecting tiles' spectrophotometric curves. Using simulated error data, wavelength accuracy was determinable at seven distinct wavelengths over the range of 440 nm to 705 nm within an accuracy of 0.2 nm. Three methods, the Matrix, Selection, and Non-Linear, were developed to increase the accuracy of spectrophotometric data. Each method determined and corrected spectrophotometric data differently. The Matrix method was …

Real Time Maze Traversal, Robert Spina Feb 1989

Real Time Maze Traversal, Robert Spina

Theses

This thesis investigates the application of artificial intelligence to real time control in combination with image analysis techniques. The system consists of a "mouse" and a "cheese" in a two dimensional maze which are viewed by a video camera connected to a frame grabber board in a personal computer (PC). The maze is designed to be alterable during the mouse's navigation towards the "cheese" or target. The pc runs the frame grabber software which analyzes the maze to find the cheese, mouse and movement options during traversal. Parameters about the mouse's position, the maze constraints in the vicinity of the …

A Methodology For Designing Spacecraft Onboard Processing Systems, Mohammad Nadeem Ahmad Jan 1989

A Methodology For Designing Spacecraft Onboard Processing Systems, Mohammad Nadeem Ahmad

Theses

A three layer methodology is presented for designing spacecraft onboard computer systems. The system design is perceived as a sequence of three hierarchical layers: the Dedicated Processing Layer, the Application and Support Processing Layer, and the Communications Processing Layer. Each layer implements a distinct set of functions and offers services at different levels of abstraction. As opposed to the ISO/OSI Reference Model, where the prime objective is to implement peripheral interaction between two systems, the layered approach used here is to address the problems in system design itself. The problem is approached in a bottom-up fashion, starting with the description …

A Microcomputer Based Non-Invasive Cardiopulmonary Monitor Using A Microwave Interferometer, Tanmoy K. Basu Jan 1989

A Microcomputer Based Non-Invasive Cardiopulmonary Monitor Using A Microwave Interferometer, Tanmoy K. Basu

Theses

With a microwave interferometer the vibrational velocity of the anterior (front), as well as posterior (back) chest wall can be monitored and recorded. The recorded signals are a reflection of the mechanical cardiac activity within the chest cavity, as opposed to Electrocardiogram (ECG) which is a reflection of the electrical cardiac activity. The interferometer recordings are obtained with no physical contact between the instrument and the subject. Moreover, the subject can be fully clothed since microwave energy readily passes through normal dry clothing.

A microwave interferometer that is capable of detecting the vibrational velocity of the surfaces of the chest …

Progressive Transmission Of Images Using Pyramidal Structure, Chin-Hua Hsu Jan 1989

Progressive Transmission Of Images Using Pyramidal Structure, Chin-Hua Hsu

Theses

A progressive image transmission scheme based upon Laplacian pyramid structure is used for image coding over low-bandwidth channels. The filtering and differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) methods of image coding are generalized to allow quantization of the Laplacian images. Filtering is performed with a local, symmetric weighting function. The three different quantizers, (1) scalar quantizer, (2) memoryless vector quantizer (VQ), and (3) finite state vector quantizer (FSVQ), are used here to compare the results. In the receiver end, the image can be reconstructed using reverse procedure. The reconstructed image is not the same as the original image because of the …

Design Of A Lan Based Data Acquisition System For Sensor Applications, Krishna Murthy Uppunda Jan 1989

Design Of A Lan Based Data Acquisition System For Sensor Applications, Krishna Murthy Uppunda

Theses

This thesis presents the design of a local area network (LAN) based data acquisition system for sensor applications. The circuit designed forms the robotic LAN (RLAN) interface between the sensor IC nodes and the ARCNET network. The RLAN network uses two packet protocols. The sensor data request (SDR) packet is received by the sensor IC nodes and the sensor transmits the sensor data (SD) packet. The RLAN interface provides a two way communication between the sensors and the ARCNET network. Whenever an ARCNET node receives the SDR packet, it stores the packet temporarily in a 1k RAM buffer. The RLAN …

Use Of The Lms Algorithm In Ecg Analysis, Xiaohua Yang Jan 1989

Use Of The Lms Algorithm In Ecg Analysis, Xiaohua Yang

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to develop an IBM PC-AT based system to effectively process electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. Adaptive filter theory is used to implement a noise cancellation system (adaptive noise canceller), which adaptively cancels the ECG signals resulting in real ECG noise. The adaptive process is based on the well known least-mean square (LMS) algorithm.

The noise canceling system is software based. Several programs have been written, which include analog to digital converter control, data acquisition and storage, data retrieval, adaptive filtering and digitized data graphics.

The thesis presents numerous computer experiments. The performance of the adaptive noise …

Theses

This research project was directed to characterize the variables that govern the black and white reproduction process in a desktop publishing enviroment (DTP), which in this case is formed by: a Macintosh II computer, a Mycrotek 300A scanner as the inputing device and a LaserWriter as the outputting device. The specific goal of this research was to find the ideal settings of cell size and resolution for each type of black and white photographic image that would produce the best reproduction possible from the system. Two different experiments were performed, the first one using a gray scale and a resolution …

Laser Perforation For Computer Paper, Claude F. Gattuso Jan 1989

Laser Perforation For Computer Paper, Claude F. Gattuso

Theses

In today's computer paper printing, cross and edge perforations are done only by mechanical perforators. The mechanical perforation process works fine since the width of the bridges and the length of the holes to be perforated remain large. Concerned with improvements in quality, printers have introduced microperforations. The holes and bridges of the perforation pattern are so small that after the user has torn off the sheet of computer paper along the perforation pattern, the edges of the document are very smooth and clean. Unfortunately, microperforations are reaching the limits of what can be achieved by the mechanical perforators. Because …

Pilot Study Of Hotel Ownership Patterns And Their Economic Impacts On Wales Economy, Joseph La Lopa Jan 1989

Pilot Study Of Hotel Ownership Patterns And Their Economic Impacts On Wales Economy, Joseph La Lopa

Theses

Countless cities, states and nations have decided to employ tourism development as a method to bolster their economy. One of the key components in a successful tourism development plan is the hotel sector. Hotel ownership patterns have a variety and range (from low to high) of economic impacts on the host community. Knowledge of the affects hotel ownership0 patterns have on the economy can serve to assist host governments in accomplishing specific economic objectives in their community. From this standpoint, it is entirely possible to facilitate a desirable outcome from tourist consumption of the host's cultural, historical and natural resources.
