The Changing Nature Of Outdoor Play Spaces In West Australian Primary Schools: An Exploratory Case Study. Exploring Play Opportunities, Design And Utilisation Of An Intentionally Designed Nature Play Space (Idnps)., Catherine Fitzhardinge

Theses

The development, wellbeing and learning of children is of global importance; opportunities that promote healthy childhood development have long lasting social and economic impacts. Play is the primary occupation through which children develop; nature play provides opportunities for physical, cognitive, social and emotional skill development. West Australian (WA) schools are installing intentionally designed nature play spaces (IDNPS) to support outdoor play opportunities and connection to nature. However, there is little contextual evidence regarding how these spaces are designed and utilised to support child development, wellbeing and learning.

This exploratory, mixed methods case study examined how children aged 4-7 years old …

Bayesian Networks For Safety-Critical Systems, Joseph Mietkiewicz Jan 2025

Bayesian Networks For Safety-Critical Systems, Joseph Mietkiewicz

Theses

This thesis addresses a operational challenge in modern industrial operations: the increasing complexity of systems and the consequent cognitive burden on operators. As industrial technologies advance, the human-computer interface has become the primary conduit for information flow, playing a pivotal role in operational decision-making. However, the proliferation of data often leads to information overload, potentially compromising rather than enhancing operator performance. This research explores an approach to this pressing issue through the application of Bayesian networks as decision support systems in safety- critical scenarios. Our study employs a multi-faceted approach, combining theoretical modeling with empirical testing. Through collaboration with industry …

Dual-Mode Linear Phased Array Antennas For Monopulse Radars, Jonathan Waters Jan 2025

Dual-Mode Linear Phased Array Antennas For Monopulse Radars, Jonathan Waters

Theses

Phased array antennas are widely used around the world. Much research is focused on extending capabilities of modern wireless systems and radars. Dual-mode elements are researched for use in beamforming, monopulse radar and multi-frequency applications. Beamforming in itself is an extensively researched topic, aimed at canceling interference and/or finding signal angle-of-arrivals. The goals of this thesis are two-fold. Firstly, to take the monopulse capabilities of a dual-mode antenna element to allow for a linear phased array antenna to generate the sum, delta-azimuth, and delta-elevation channels whereas normal linear phased array antennas can only generate a single difference channel. Secondly, to …

Augmenting Attention : An Ooda-Centric Framework For Explainable Ai In Ar Human-Ai Teaming Applications, Dylan Wright

Theses

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly deployed in high-stakes environments where success depends on more than computational accuracy; it also requires alignment with human perception and attention. Traditional explainable AI (XAI) methods provide static, post-hoc justifications that are poorly suited to time-critical decision cycles. This thesis investigates whether perceptually aligned, real-time explanations in Augmented Reality (AR) can enhance performance, workload balance, and trust within the Observe–Orient–Decide–Act (OODA) loop. A custom AR search-and-rescue simulation tested three conditions: no assistance, static overlays, and perceptually aligned explanations using adaptive cues such as occlusion-aware tethers and urgency-based visuals. The results show that any explanation improved …

Generation Of True Random Numbers With Actively Stabilized, Low Dimensional Chaos, Aidan Barton Jan 2025

Generation Of True Random Numbers With Actively Stabilized, Low Dimensional Chaos, Aidan Barton

Theses

True Random Number Generators (TRNGs) are heavily used and their design often relies on empirical validation from statistical test suites. Reliance solely on empirical observations to estimate entropy rates for cryptographic applications introduces risk, as accurately inferring long-term correlations demands prohibitively large datasets. Empirical validation of TRNGs must be supplemented by strong theoretical backing to justify estimated information theoretic quantities. We present an electronic, hardware TRNG scheme that produces a maximally random output guaranteed from first principles. This TRNG uses a pulse-width based hardware realization of an iterated map that produces physical entropy via low-dimensional chaotic dynamics. The simple dynamics …

Unbound Subgenres : Overlapping Age Categories In Contemporary Romance And Their Implications, London Stevenson Jan 2025

Unbound Subgenres : Overlapping Age Categories In Contemporary Romance And Their Implications, London Stevenson

Theses

This thesis aims to highlight the importance of genre labelling in contemporary romance fiction and the larger implications that come from the misuse of labels. Considerations of the genre based on narrative elements (Regis, 2003; Michelson, 2022), age categorization (Cart, 2011; Tribunella, 2007), and emerging market conditions (McAlister, 2018; Stewart, 2013) have generated considerable discussion over the last twenty-five years. While each of these scholars draws important conclusions about romance and its subgenres, none of them consider the significance of reader opinion, which is now enhanced due to literary digital spaces. In this paper, I examine nine romance novels for …

Sidelobe Reductions In Linear And Circular Phased Array Antennas Based On Hybrid Synthesis Techniques, Eli C. Brothers Jan 2025

Sidelobe Reductions In Linear And Circular Phased Array Antennas Based On Hybrid Synthesis Techniques, Eli C. Brothers

Theses

The concentration of electromagnetic waves within an angular space is made possible by radiating devices, typically realized in the form of an antenna. Hence, energy emitted or received outside of the intended field of view is manifested in the sidelobes and minor lobes of a radiation pattern, of which sidelobes are commonly responsible for unwanted interference and signal spread. To mitigate these issues, this study seeks to investigate the efficacy of a hybrid synthesis technique based on electrically displaced phase center antenna (E-DPCA) and partially-tapered methods in reducing the sidelobes of linear and planar arrays by optimizing the excitations of …

An Evaluation Of The Idm Car-Following Model : Simulation And A Dynamical Systems Perspective, Trevor Mcclain

Theses

The Intelligent Driver Model (IDM) is a car-following model that has existed since the early 2000s, existing as one of the most widely used follow-the-leader models to simulate safe and realistic driver behavior. In this work, the IDM is used to evaluate the suitability of ROS 2-Gazebo for vehicle simulation, showing that significant non-determinism is present within the simulation. Additionally, we evaluate the effects of delay and an inserted Followerstopper car following model on the traffic dynamics of the system. Specifically, the generation of stop-and-go waves in idealized traffic from a dynamical systems perspective is examined. We also show that …

A Mutually Exclusive 3d Convolution Based Time Dilation Framework For Future Frame Prediction In Video Streams Of Natural Events, Benjamin Robinson Jan 2025

A Mutually Exclusive 3d Convolution Based Time Dilation Framework For Future Frame Prediction In Video Streams Of Natural Events, Benjamin Robinson

Theses

In this thesis, a framework for predicting future frames from videos of naturally occurring processes will be presented. This is achieved by learning the underlying physical laws of the natural process through the exploitation of spatiotemporal features from the frames of the video. Our framework defines windows containing frames at varying time intervals, which we call dilations, and uses them to predict future frames using a 3D convolutional neural network (CNN). The network architecture accepts six time-dilated windows of input video frames and computes spatiotemporal features for each window maintaining the exclusion of the resulting features across three phases of …

Towards Secure Runtime Auditing Of Remote Embedded System Software, Adam Ilyas Caulfield Jan 2025

Towards Secure Runtime Auditing Of Remote Embedded System Software, Adam Ilyas Caulfield

Theses

Modern embedded systems are increasingly deployed in various settings to execute critical sensing/actuation tasks. At the lower end of the scale, they are designed with low-cost and energy-efficient microcontroller units (MCUs) that lack the common security features of general-purpose processors. To assess their state in a cost-effective manner, Control Flow Attestation (CFA) methods provide means for a trusted device operator (i.e., the Verifier -- Vrf) to detect attacks that compromise the integrity or runtime behavior of a remotely-deployed MCU (i.e., the Prover -- Prv). This is achieved by a root-of-trust (RoT) in Prv recording an authenticated trace (CFLog) of the …
