Violence In Southern Literature, Lucy Katherine Tejero Jan 1985

Violence In Southern Literature, Lucy Katherine Tejero

Theses

This thesis explores the recurring theme of violence in the works of key Southern writers—William Faulkner, Carson McCullers, Flannery O’Connor, Eudora Welty, and Robert Penn Warren. It argues that violence in Southern literature is not merely sensational or gratuitous, but deeply tied to the region’s historical, social, and cultural realities, particularly the legacies of slavery, the Civil War, and entrenched racial hierarchies. By situating each author within this context, the study demonstrates how acts of violence in their fiction serve as a lens through which to examine moral conflict, social change, and human frailty.

Faulkner’s depictions of brutality are shown …

A Critical Analysis And Adaptation Of The Woolgatherer, Dennis A. Wood Jan 1985

A Critical Analysis And Adaptation Of The Woolgatherer, Dennis A. Wood

Theses

This thesis by Dennis A. Wood presents a critical analysis and creative adaptation of The Woolgatherer by William Mastrosimone, examining how a contemporary play can be reshaped using classical dramatic principles. The study explores the transformation of Mastrosimone’s script through the lens of Aristotelian poetics and other historic and modern theories of drama and play direction. Wood interrogates themes such as obscenity, nature, audience engagement, and moral content, advocating for the use of “masked obscenity” and “unmasked nature” as tools to elevate the play to a more universal and potentially classical form.

The thesis divides its analysis into theoretical and …

Criteria For Selecting Materials Suitable For Application To Modified Atmosphere Packaging Of Fish, Yvonne Allen Jan 1985

Criteria For Selecting Materials Suitable For Application To Modified Atmosphere Packaging Of Fish, Yvonne Allen

Theses

The process of preservation is an important step in stabilizing perishable items in order for them to withstand distribution, handling, and storage. Preservation can be achieved by several methods, but the method of concern in this paper is that of modified atmosphere storage which is reported to extend the shelf-lives of perishable products. Studies on modified atmosphere storage have emphasized the preservating action of carbon dioxide (CO2) in reducing (1) the extent of microbial spoilage, and (2) the tissue pH of the products so stored in comparison to those stored aerobically. Low tissue pH creates unfavourable environment which negatively influences …

Effects Of Two Chelating Drugs On Trace Element Metabolism In The Rat, Thomas J. Solecki May 1984

Effects Of Two Chelating Drugs On Trace Element Metabolism In The Rat, Thomas J. Solecki

Theses

Numerous drugs have structures which suggest that they and/or their metabolites are likely to be chelating agents and therefore might affect trace element metabolism. For some drugs, their therapeutic activity or side effects may be due to this chelating potential. Ethambutol, used in the treatment of tuberculosis, is an example. There is also evidence that other drugs, such as alpha-methyldopa, may possess this potential; although its primary therapeutic action occurs via mechanisms other than chelation. The objective of this thesis was to determine the effects of ethambutol and alpha-methyldopa on tissue metal concentrations and balance of four essential trace metals: …

Investigations Into Rates And Mechanisms Of Mercury Depuration In The Killifish, Fundulus Heteroclitus, Joanne A. Korpanty

Theses

Metallothionein (MT) and glutathione (GSH) have been shown in mammalian research to play a role in the sequestration and depuration of mercury. The sulfhydryl groups on both these peptides have a strong affinity for mercury, MT for Hg2+ and GSH for CH3Hg+. In this study, killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus) were force-fed one piece of squid laced with labelled mercuric nitrate to give a final food concentration of 20 ppm 203Hg2+ and 0.03 -0.05 µg g-1 Hg2+ total dose. Most of the mercury, 84.1 ± 12.1% (mean ± standard deviation), is depurated within the …

Acrylamide Effects On Nerve Terminal Enzymes, Christopher S. E. Marlowe May 1984

Acrylamide Effects On Nerve Terminal Enzymes, Christopher S. E. Marlowe

Theses

Acrylamide causes a peripehral neuropathy. The biochemical mechanism by which it does so is the subject of intense investigation. One of the principal hypotheses for this mechanism centers on acrylamide's ability to inhibit glycolysis. This study examines the effects of in vivo exposure to acrylamide on the enzymes of the nerve terminal particle, the synaptosome.

A method for measuring glycolytic enzyme inhibition in the synaptosome was developed. Acrylamide (500 mg/kg) was administered to rats intraperitoneally. Synaptosomes were prepared by the method of Dodd et al, and lysed by sonication. GAPDH activity and NSE concentration were measured. GAPDH inhibition measured in …

The second addresses my work in terms of personal issues, manner of approach, symbolism, composition, visual eclecticism and internal source of imagery. The subjects dealt with in the two sections are mutually modified in their working relationship. Each yields to the pressure of the other as I constantly want to do more than I am able. I have separated them for the sake of clarity, as I conceive them; the first being the means and the second the end. Even …

A Study Of The Influence Of Mesh On Light Reflection In Exposure Of Photosensitive Screen Printing Stencils, Suzanne Wheeler Apr 1984

A Study Of The Influence Of Mesh On Light Reflection In Exposure Of Photosensitive Screen Printing Stencils, Suzanne Wheeler

Theses

The mesh has been an interference factor in the making of close tolerance high resolution screen printing stencils. Radiation strikes the surface of the threads and is reflected into the light sensitive emulsion causing a deterioration in the sharpness of the stencil edge. This problem has been largely overcome by the introduction of dyed mesh. However, by purposely exploiting the reflective properties of the mesh, a random, or irregular pattern of dots can be produced. This is accomplished by exposing a continuous tone positive to a screen that has been coated with a photosensitive emulsion. Five screens of varying mesh …
