Computer Vision Of A Moving Square Using A Two-Level Data Hierarchy, David Zokaites Apr 1986

Computer Vision Of A Moving Square Using A Two-Level Data Hierarchy, David Zokaites

Theses

An investigation of the relative speed and effectiveness of two computer vision algorithms has been conducted. One algorithm incorporates a two-level data hierarchy. The other incorporates a one-level hierarchy and serves as a relatively conventional basis for comparison. The computer vision algorithms, programmed in Fortran, detect and recognize a moving square. Both computer vision algorithms could readily be implemented in existing hardware. The two-level algorithm was found to be up to 90% faster than the one-level algorithm. An analysis was made of elapsed CPU time variance as a function of time of day and user load. This was done to …

Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity Of Brunswick Soil With Aqueous Benzene Solution, Thomas R. Pisciotta Jan 1986

Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity Of Brunswick Soil With Aqueous Benzene Solution, Thomas R. Pisciotta

Theses

Tests measuring saturated hydraulic conductivity and dispersivity were conducted on Brunswick soil using an aqueous solution of benzene. The tests were performed using a flexible wall permeameter which was modified to allow extraction of effluent samples immediately upon exit of the test specimen. Influent and effluent samples were analyzed with a gas chromatograph in order to quantify dispersion and sorption in the specimen.

The test was performed using a confining pressure of 70 psi. and a hydraulic gradient of 100.3. Using a sample statically compacted to 99.2% of the Modified Proctor maximum density and tap water as a permeant, stable …

Graphic Display Of Robot Kinematics, Ramamurthy Vishwanathan Jan 1986

Graphic Display Of Robot Kinematics, Ramamurthy Vishwanathan

Theses

This thesis uses the HOUIE.BYLI graphics software package to simulate the kinematics of a six degree of freedom, MAKER I robot. The coordinate frames for the various links of the robot were established. The kinematic equations for the manipulator were developed snd solved using the techniques of inverse geometric transformations and transformations of objects in 3D space. A program was also developed to calculate the joint variables of the manipulator given any point on, and the orientation of, an object. These variable values are used to direct the robot end effector to the given point. This can be seen in …

A Presentation Of The Self-Organizing Paradigm; Speculation On Its Impact On Health, Gail Dahl Schomaker Jan 1986

A Presentation Of The Self-Organizing Paradigm; Speculation On Its Impact On Health, Gail Dahl Schomaker

Theses

This thesis explores the emergence of a new paradigm in understanding health, grounded in the scientific principles of self-organization and systems theory. Gail Dahl Schomaker presents a comprehensive examination of the shift from the traditional Newtonian mechanical worldview to the dynamic, process-oriented perspective rooted in the theory of dissipative structures as formulated by Ilya Prigogine. Central to this new worldview is the conceptualization of living organisms, including humans, as open systems that maintain and increase order through continual interaction with their environment.

The paper is structured to introduce key theoretical models from systems theory, cybernetics, and holistic health, progressively building …

A Utilitarian Approach To Spelling, Peggy Jean Laws Korane Jan 1986

A Utilitarian Approach To Spelling, Peggy Jean Laws Korane

Theses

Traditionally, most spelling curricula includes the routine of introduction, practice, and testing of a weekly spelling lesson. This mundane repetition need not become a nemesis. The following spelling curriculum is a utilitarian approach to a spelling curriculum for the future. With this utilitarian approach, it can be made to enhance other work being performed in the classroom, making all experiences valuable in meaning other than learning a group of predetermined words chosen at random.

This utilitarian spelling program has been created because of a need to enhance legitimate meaning in the study of spelling. Past experiences have determined that students …

Determination Of Trace Quantities Of Selenium And Arsenic In Canned Tuna Fish Using Electroanalytical Techniques, Ann Marie Higham Dec 1985

Determination Of Trace Quantities Of Selenium And Arsenic In Canned Tuna Fish Using Electroanalytical Techniques, Ann Marie Higham

Theses

Toxic metals are present in the environment and are known to be present in food. Selenium, which is considered an essential micronutrient, is recognized as a toxic metal at slightly higher concentrations. Arsenic is also recognized as a toxic metal. Selenium and Arsenic tend to accumulate in food, specifically fish and seafood.

Fifteen brands and types of tuna fish were analyzed for selenium using differential pulse cathodic stripping voltammetry. The cans with the high and low concentrations of selenium were analyzed for arsenic using differential pulse polarography. Three samples with three percent recoveries and a blank were analyzed for each …

Packaging Requirements For A Sampling Mechanism For Self-Selection Liquid Foundation Makeup, Osnat Lustig Dec 1985

Packaging Requirements For A Sampling Mechanism For Self-Selection Liquid Foundation Makeup, Osnat Lustig

Theses

The cosmetics industry and retailers of cosmetic products face a problem of sampling of packaged merchandise by inconsiderate shoppers in self-service retail outlets. The problem is particularly serious in facial products such as liquid foundation makeup. The consumer desires hands-on feel of the product in order to make an unaided purchase decision of the product, and will continue to sample packaged products as long as there are no other alternatives. However, cost and operation considerations of the cosmetics marketing system often precludes the availability of such alternatives. This study attempts to provide an evaluation tool which will focus on the …

Present Reliability Of Liquid Crystal Display Devices, C. N. Suresh Sep 1985

Present Reliability Of Liquid Crystal Display Devices, C. N. Suresh

Theses

The purpose of this Thesis is to study the life of liquid crystal display devices as at present available in the market place. To accomplish this, accelerated tempera-ture conditions at 77°C and 85°C were used.

During the last few years, there has grown a tremendous interest in wide range temperature operating and fast LCDs. It is therefore important to understand how LCDs behave under these conditions.

The reliability of a liquid crystal display is usually measured in terms of a quantative degradation in electrical performance and a degradation in visual appearance. The degradation in visual appear6knce may manifest itself as …

A Study Of Parameters Indicating Microbial Activity In Mixed Aerobic Cultures, William Smith Sep 1985

A Study Of Parameters Indicating Microbial Activity In Mixed Aerobic Cultures, William Smith

Theses

Mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS), oxygen uptake rate (OUR) and general dehydrogenase activity, as expressed by the reduction of the electron-acceptor Dye 3-(4',5'-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 4-diphenyltetra-zolium bromide (MTT), were compared for their ability to measure microbial activity in mixed aerobic cultures. A fourth parameter, specific enzyme activity, was dropped from consideration because of the difficulty of developing a satisfactory experimental technique. Measurement of the parameters was applied to the biodegradation of phenol and o-chlorophenol by activated sludge from a municipal sewage treatment plant, and by two commercially available bacterial preparations.

MLSS, although the most commonly used of the three parameters tested, is …

Percutaneous Absorption And Metabolic Fate Of [14c]Hydroquinone In The Dog, Marva Louisa Hamilton Aug 1985

Percutaneous Absorption And Metabolic Fate Of [14c]Hydroquinone In The Dog, Marva Louisa Hamilton

Theses

Hydroquinone is used extensively as a photographic developer. The metabolic fate and percutaneous absorption of [U-14C]HQ was determined in male Beagle dogs. The excretion of 14C was determined after dermal exposure, intravenous (iv) and gavage administrations. For iv studies, 1 or 10 mg/kg of [14C]HQ was injected and blood, urine and breath were collected for 8-12 hours in anesthetized dogs. After recovery from the anesthetic, dogs were housed in metabolism cages for 6 to 7 days for collection of blood, urine and feces. Blood 14C concentrations declined slowly, with 2 apparent phases. Half-life values for the α and β phases …

Rochester: Documented, Peter Eberlin Aug 1985

Rochester: Documented, Peter Eberlin

Theses

Over a two-year period certain unappreciated, visual and factual aspects of the City of Rochester were systematically documented. These aspects of the City of Rochester consisted of Mobil Gas Stations and their owners, closed gas stations, and new businesses in former gas stations; the City Limits and residents, animals, and other noisemakers existing proximal to the City Limits; places where I had to wait in line; the MEN and WOMEN of City Hall; the dotted lines that separate traffic lanes; and a short, dead-end street that was bull dozed over and left for field. The process of documenting these aspects …

Two Dimensional Diffusional Model For Leakage Of Macromolecules In The Interstitial Space, Suthiluk Dumrongsiri May 1985

Two Dimensional Diffusional Model For Leakage Of Macromolecules In The Interstitial Space, Suthiluk Dumrongsiri

Theses

Two dimensional diffusion of macromolecules through the interstitial in the hamster cheek pouch was studied with intravital fluorescence microscopy. After topical application of Bradykinin, the movement of Fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labeled dextrans of average molecular weight 150,000 daltons (Dextran 150) was recorded on videotape which latter was played back frame-by-frame for analysis by digital image processing. Leakage of macromolecules in response to topical application of Bradykinin occurs at discrete leakage site in post caplillary venules of 15-25 um diameter, rather than in the capillary themselves. A mathematical model of two dimensional convection plus diffusion was used to simulate the macromolecule transport. …

Computerized Instrumentation System For Indirect Measurement Of Metabolic Changes In Rats, Holger Tebbje May 1985

Computerized Instrumentation System For Indirect Measurement Of Metabolic Changes In Rats, Holger Tebbje

Theses

This work describes the further development of a system for the measurement of the energy expenditure of rats. Based on the concept of indirect calorimetry the respiratory exchange is monitored in a controlled experiment. Rats are held in cages through which air is drawn and analyzed. Transducers and sensors, interfaced to the computer, are measuring the composition and the physical parameters of the gas entering and leaving the chambers. The data recieved is processed, displayed on a screen, printed and stored for later analysis.

The accuracy and repeatability of the system improved by measuring additional parameters like barometric pressure and …
