The Invasive Bank Vole (Clethrionomys Glareolus); A Longitudinal Investigation Into Rodents And Their Pathogen Communities, Using The Irish Rodent Invasion As A Model System., Andrew Mcmanus
Theses
The recent emergence of zoonotic pathogens such as, SARS-CoV-2, Ebola and Mpox, have emphasised the necessity to study wildlife and their pathogens. A knowledge gap currently exists in longitudinal studies of biological invasions, which are needed to understand the change in pathogen communities caused as the invader becomes more established. The invasion of Clethrionomys glareolus in Ireland provides a unique model system to study these changes at different stages of the bio-invasion. This is due to the depauperate small mammal community in Ireland, identifiable source population, introduction point, and ongoing expansion of C. glareolus in Ireland. Extensive work has been …

Screening And Analysis Of The Urobiome For The Production Of Antimicrobial Peptides To Target Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli, Jennifer Jones
Screening And Analysis Of The Urobiome For The Production Of Antimicrobial Peptides To Target Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli, Jennifer Jones
Theses
Urobiome research is currently at a nascent stage, due to a previously incorrect assumption that the bladder is a sterile environment. Improvements in bacterial culturing and DNA sequencing techniques have revealed a diverse resident bacterial community within the urinary tract (urobiome). As global incidences of multidrug- resistant urinary tract infections (UTIs) continue to increase, so too does the demand for novel antimicrobial therapies. Due to its relatively understudied nature, the urobiome represents a reservoir that could be mined as a potential source of novel antimicrobial compounds (e.g., bacteriocins). The aim of this thesis was to identify urobiome bacteriocins that could …
Strategic Use Of Once-A-Day Milking For Pasture-Based Dairy Cows In Ireland, John Paul Murphy
Strategic Use Of Once-A-Day Milking For Pasture-Based Dairy Cows In Ireland, John Paul Murphy
Theses
The current perception of dairy farming in Ireland is one of long hours, physically demanding work and poor remuneration, especially when compared to that of a modern, high-tech industry with career opportunities and advancement possibilities at many levels (Teagasc, 2018). One of the biggest factors in attracting and retaining people to work on Irish dairy farms is that they must be desirable places to work (Teagasc, 2018). Milking is the most labour demanding task on Irish dairy farms (Deming et al., 2018) and one, which necessitates farmers being present on the farm twice daily if milking twice-a-day (TAD). Altering milking …

Characterisation Of Asymptomatic Bacteriuria (Abu) Isolates And Their Antimicrobial Activity Against Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli (Upec), Ciara Kenneally
Theses
Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) is the most common aetiological agent of community and hospital-acquired urinary tract infections (UTIs). UTIs caused by E. coli result in considerable morbidity, mortality, and economic loss worldwide due to increasing resistance to antibiotics. Substantial efforts are being made to develop novel alternatives to conventional antibiotic therapies. One approach is the principle of bacterial interference; using low-virulence, or commensal, bacteria to prevent colonisation of pathogens by competing for nutrients, or producing antimicrobial compounds such as bacteriocins. E. coli isolates inducing asymptomatic bacteriuria (ABU) have been proposed as a therapeutic alternative for UPEC infection. ABU is a …

Complexity, Grouping, And Similarity: Effects On Numerosity Estimations, Keighly Harris
Theses
This study looked at the effects of visual features like complexity, grouping, and similarity on numerosity estimations. I hypothesized that complex visual stimuli would be more difficult to accurately estimate than simple visual stimuli. Additionally, I hypothesized that stimuli that were visually similar or displayed in spread out, distributed patterns would have more accurate estimations compared to visually random or closely grouped stimuli. Lastly, this study was designed to assess the combined effects of these visual features on numerosity estimation accuracy. Participants were asked to briefly look at images displaying groups of items containing these visual features, estimate the number …
Phylogeography, Speciation, And Cryptic Diversity In The Cave Springtail Pseudosinella Spinosa (Entomobryomorpha: Entomobryidae) From The Interior Low Plateau And Appalachian Valley & Ridge Karst Regions, Brendan Cramphorn
Theses
Caves offer a unique opportunity to study the ecology and evolution of life in extreme environments, particularly with respect to understanding patterns of diversity. Most cave-obligate species are dispersal limited and have restricted ranges, often endemic to a single or a few cave systems. However, a few species have particularly broad distributions suggesting that they either are not dispersal limited or perhaps represent a species complex of morphological similar but genetically distinct species. In this thesis, I explore morphological variation, phylogeography, and possibly cryptic diversity in Pseudosinella spinosa, a cave collembolan (springtail) that inhabits the Interior Low Plateau and Appalachian …

Potential Mechanisms Maintaining A Conspicuous Polymorphism In Eastern Mosquitofish (Gambusia Holbrooki), Katelyn Giltner
Theses
Genetic variation often precedes adaptation, so the mechanisms that maintain this variation are a central topic in evolutionary biology. Gambusia holbrooki, or eastern mosquitofish, possesses a rare polymorphism for melanistic coloration. Melanics and typical silver males were examined for differences in behavioral and physiological traits that may impact the persistence of the melanism trait. No differences in standard metabolic rate were found via closed-chamber respirometry, but a detour task indicated that melanic males possess greater cognitive flexibility. Effects of the social environment on stress and reproductive traits were also evaluated by pairing males and comparing cortisol levels and sperm quality …
Characterization And Analytical Prediction Of The Effective Elastic Modulus In Additively Manufactured Body-Centered Cubic Lattice Structures, Peyton Hall
Theses
Advancements in metal additive manufacturing have enabled the production of metal lattice structures. The customizability of the lattice topology offers the potential to yield lightweight materials with highly tailored thermal and mechanical properties. By building on well-established models of other cellular solids such as metal foams, the intricate structural behavior of these lattices is simplified to effective values for key mechanical properties which are given as a function of the relative density of the lattice as well as certain material and lattice parameters. It is intended that these effective values will be used to represent the lattice at a macroscopic …
