A Gender Specific Interactive Project To Promote Bilingual Literacy In American Sign Language And Written English, Catherine Stotts May 1994

A Gender Specific Interactive Project To Promote Bilingual Literacy In American Sign Language And Written English, Catherine Stotts

Theses

What do young adults (age 12-18) think entertainment consists of? Is it movies, television, computer games, video tapes, multi-media products? What about books, are books considered entertainment? Because interactive multi-media can incorporate text, sound, music, animation, Quicktime movies and allows user interaction, books have become a neglected part of the entertainment market. Even though multi-media can be highly interactive, reading books is highly interactive too. The readers must use their imagination to construct the many images, sounds, and moods of the book. There is the concern that people really don't know how to read. A vast majority of these multi-media …

Design, Graphic Arts, And Environment, Sondra Zalewski Mar 1994

Design, Graphic Arts, And Environment, Sondra Zalewski

Theses

The environment draws great attention today from many people and businesses. Some companies are beginning to play off these concerns in their marketing approach, while others dodge the topic at all turns. While many people feel we have serious environmental problems, others do not. It is a subject with which everyone is, perhaps, too hasty in their judgment. This thesis project encourages behavioral awareness and provides information from a multitude of sources so that a practical, rather than radical, view may develop. Information surrounding issues about the environment appear in many diverse publications. The sources of information, as well as …

Design, Construction, And Operation Of Water Treatment Plant Residual Monofills, Haitao Bian Jan 1994

Design, Construction, And Operation Of Water Treatment Plant Residual Monofills, Haitao Bian

Theses

Due to the stringent environmental regulations, landfilling becomes the most viable option for ultimate disposal of water treatment plant (WTP) residues. At present, most states apply the regulations for municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills to the landfilling of WTP residues. This is too stringent since the WTP residues are not hazardous. Therefore, development of suitable criteria for WTP residual monofills is necessary and urgent.

A set of environmental and geotechnical experiments was conducted to characterize WTP residues. It can be concluded that very little leachate will be produced and migration of leachate is unlikely. Also it was noted that insignificant …

In Vitro Testing And Evaluation Of Intraaortic And Extraaortic Balloon Counterpulsation Devices, Joseph V. Izzo Jan 1994

In Vitro Testing And Evaluation Of Intraaortic And Extraaortic Balloon Counterpulsation Devices, Joseph V. Izzo

Theses

The primary purpose of this project was to develop an in vitro environment in which the intraaortic and extra-aortic balloon pumps could be tested and evaluated. This was done by modifying a mechanical heart simulator -- the pulse duplicator system -- to accommodate both devices, and developing a software system that could collect and process the data relevant to the operation of the two balloons.

Both counterpulsation techniques were tested in the pulse duplicator where the aortic pressure and flow data were collected. The software system then processes the data to calculate all of the parameters affected by counterpulsation.

While …

A Study Of In Vitro Phase Aberration Measurements In Ultrasonic Imaging, Todd Huck Jan 1994

A Study Of In Vitro Phase Aberration Measurements In Ultrasonic Imaging, Todd Huck

Theses

Phase aberrations in soft tissues have been shown in previous studies to create disturbing degradations in the point spread function (psf) of ultrasonic phased array imaging systems. These aberrations are caused by spatial velocity fluctuations due to the inhomogeneous nature of soft tissue. Certain time delay corrections are applied to the signal received by each element of a phased array based on the assumption of constant velocity. Small deviations from this assumption in a soft tissue can result in spatial fluctuation in time delay and have a negative effect on the corrected output. The solution is a two step process. …

Knowledge Based Text Indexing And Retrieval Utilizing Case Based Reasoning, Alan Mick Jan 1994

Knowledge Based Text Indexing And Retrieval Utilizing Case Based Reasoning, Alan Mick

Theses

Information retrieval systems for documents normally rely on the use of keywords that describe the text in some fashion or another, or are contained in the text itself, for indexing and searching. These keywords may be associated with standard boolean operators, where presence or absence in the text or text description is used as the truth value, or other oper ators indicating their proximity to one another in the text. Another emerging approach is the use of content or knowledge based indexing and retrieval. In this approach the text is not represented or treated as a collection keywords, rather its …

What does computer-based training (CBT) have in common with art? Artists have always striven to produce artwork under various constraints and conditions. Trying something new was considered a rebellion and artists were often criticized. Through the ages, artists have had to overcome many obstacles, including exploring the limitations presented by their chosen media. Building a visual interface for a computer in the past was left to the programmer. At the time this was acceptable, because only a programmer would look at it. Today, almost everybody uses a computer and appealing graphics are a must. The programmer from the past cannot …
