Development Of An Elisa Method For The Measurement Of Cd44 Expression In Human Serum, Ciara Hurley Jan 1998

Development Of An Elisa Method For The Measurement Of Cd44 Expression In Human Serum, Ciara Hurley

Theses

CD44 is a cell surface glycoprotein (mol. wt. =85-95 kDa) which has been implicated in lymphocyte-HEV interactions and the process of lymphocyte homing. CD44 is a complex glycoprotein which undergoes extensive alternative splicing to generate various CD44 isoforms. CD44 functions include the delivery of an activation signal to T-cells, binding to hyaluronate, mediation of lymphocyte homing, and the spread of metastatic cells. CD44 has been particularly implicated in the dissemination of non- Hodgkin's lymphoma and as such may serve as a useful prognostic marker of disease progression. CD44 measurement in serum may provide a rapid, inexpensive and relatively non-invasive prognostic …

Development And Validation Of An Improved Ultrasensitive Assay For Cardiac Troponin I (Ctni), William G. Blake Jan 1998

Development And Validation Of An Improved Ultrasensitive Assay For Cardiac Troponin I (Ctni), William G. Blake

Theses

Cardiac troponin I (cTnl) has been reported to be a highly specific marker for myocardial injury. In patients suffering from acute coronary syndromes, a sensitive serum marker which is closely related to the extent of myocardial damage which provides prognostic data and which can be measured rapidly is desirable. In this thesis a “sandwich” enzyme immunoassay was developed to measure cTnI. The developed assay was reproducible with the inter assay precision ranging from 4.8-14% and the intra assay precision ranging from 3.1-9.5%. The limit of detection of the assay was calculated as 0.385 ng/ml. The upper reference range (non-parametric 95% …

Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (Mrsa): Molecular Detection And Dna Fingerprinting, Leslie Cotter Jan 1998

Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (Mrsa): Molecular Detection And Dna Fingerprinting, Leslie Cotter

Theses

Throughout the 1990s, the incidence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus has increased in many health care areas including acute and chronic care facilities, outpatient clinics and in the community. Once introduced into a health care environment, this nosocomial pathogen can spread rapidly and as MRSA are resistant to multiple antibiotics, treatment is often difficult. Therefore effective infection control measures are required to prevent cross-infection and further spread of endemic strains.

In this study, a sensitive and specific triplex-PCR assay was designed for MRSA detection, wherein three genes, the methicillin resistance gene (mecA). femA and the extracellular thermonuclease gene (rmc) were simultaneously …

Composition And Environmental Assessment Of Soils From United Arab Emirates, Torfa Alsheba Khames Alsheriani Jan 1998

Composition And Environmental Assessment Of Soils From United Arab Emirates, Torfa Alsheba Khames Alsheriani

Theses

The study focuses on the mineral and chemical composition, the textural characters and environmental assessment of some soils from the UAE. About forty soil samples were collected from AI Ain District and the Eastern Mountain District. Soils in AI Ain and its suburb are strongly influenced by the aeolian sedimentation, while those of the Eastern Mountain are formed in narrow valleys strikingly close to ophiolitic hinterland.

The studied soils· are remarkably impoverished in clay size fraction and clay minerals as well. This is due to the impeded chemical weathering under the prevailing arid climate. Corroborative techniques including X-ray diffraction, infrared …

Development And Validation Of Flow-Injection (Continuous-Flow) Elisa Techniques., Declan Gerard Spillane Jan 1998

Development And Validation Of Flow-Injection (Continuous-Flow) Elisa Techniques., Declan Gerard Spillane

Theses

A flow-through enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was developed based on affinity chromatography using the determination of ferritin in serum as a model system. In this method, samples and standards are introduced to separate columns containing immobilised anti-ferritin antibody, and antigen bound by solid-phase antibody is subsequently detected using an anti-ferritin-alkaline phosphatase conjugate. To detect immobilised label, p-nitrophenyl phosphate is added and product is developed in the column at room temperature. Following elution of product from the column, the absorbance is measured and the columns are regenerated using a low pH elution. The final developed system requires approximately 1.5 h for the …

A Study Of Heat-Seal Strength In The Presence Of Edible Oil Surface Contamination Of Ethylene-Methacrylic Acid Copolymer Films, David Britt Jan 1998

A Study Of Heat-Seal Strength In The Presence Of Edible Oil Surface Contamination Of Ethylene-Methacrylic Acid Copolymer Films, David Britt

Theses

Packages made from flexible film often use a heat-sealing process to ensure closure. The process involves joining two surfaces of film with heat and pressure across a period of time. Heat-seal problems arise when another substance partially obstructs the film-to-film contact. This substance acts as a surface contaminant. In packaging operations, the product being packaged is often the source of contamination in the sealing process. Testing heat-seal strength is a primary method for evaluating seal performance of flexible film. Test procedures require contaminant-free film samples to maintain accuracy and precision in results. This study altered the test method to explore …

Theses

This study was designed to analyze the change from 60# Gilman white converter kraft to 60# Georgia-Pacific white Velumina kraft on the outer ply of multi-wall paper bags. Logisitical issues were driving the change but Good Manufacturing Practices had to be observed as the bags were being used for Food and Drug Administration registered medicated animal feed products. The papers were tested for physical strength and print quality. Results showed that the 60# Georgia-Pacific white Velumina kraft was equal to the 60# Gilman white converter kraft in physical strength and slightly better in print quality. Both papers met the performance …

A Strategic Marketing Plan For Welltech International, Renee Denlow

Theses

It's here, and whether you know it or not, you are getting swept away by a strong underlying current of the "digital revolution ." For many, life has become an inoperative treadmill on the loose, for the pace gets quicker and more challenging. How often do you find yourself or the people surrounding you saying, "Fax me the draft, so I can review it prior to tomorrow's meeting.," "Leave me a message on my car phone," and/or "e-mail me the latest statistics before noon?" Electronic mail (E-mail) is just one of many of the technologies that is changing the landscape …

Pesticide-Related Health Problems And Illness In Farm-Workers In The United Arab Emirates, Mahra Mohammed Mahmood Beshwari Dec 1997

Pesticide-Related Health Problems And Illness In Farm-Workers In The United Arab Emirates, Mahra Mohammed Mahmood Beshwari

Theses

Arabian Gulf countries, witnessed rapid development in many aspects of life. Although these

developments have improved the quality of life in the UAE, they have drawbacks that generated

health problems and environmental hazards. One of the consequences of rapid development is the

usage of large amounts of pesticides in agricultural production for the sake of increasing the yield of crops. However, the expanded use of these pesticides is known to result in acute respiratory symptoms and changes in body metabolism. To-date, no population-based study has been conducted to investigate the effects of pesticides on plasma amino acids and liver enzyme …

The effect of methomyl was investigated in four experimental run, by analysing the change in cell count in bone marrow after methomyl treatment. It was found that methomyl treatment caused significant reduction …

A Room With A Bath, Joel Urruty Nov 1997

A Room With A Bath, Joel Urruty

Theses

This thesis is a response to a personal problem I have with modern day bathrooms. The bathroom is a room we frequent daily, yet it is often times the room with the least visual interest. The design of a bathroom is no small task; it has many parameters that need to be addressed. One must consider the functional aspects as well as the practicality of the bathroom. Yet its aesthetics must not be overlooked. As a furniture designer and a craftsman I decided to challenge myself with the task of designing a bathroom. The goal was to create a unique …

Electrophysiologic Studies Of Hypothalamic Adenosine-5'-Triphosphate-Sensitive Potassium Channels, Dinora Hernandez Oct 1997

Electrophysiologic Studies Of Hypothalamic Adenosine-5'-Triphosphate-Sensitive Potassium Channels, Dinora Hernandez

Theses

Of particular interest in this study were the electrical phenomena involving currents from the ATP sensitive K channel in isolated hypothalamic ventromedial nucleus (VMN) neurons. These neurons may play an important role in the glucose-sensing system of the body. Rat VMN neurons were isolated. For neuronal isolation, the proteolytic enzyme pronase was used. However, pronase was too harsh. The use of papain, another proteolytic enzyme, led to better neuronal morphology. The perforated patch clamp technique was used to gain access to the cell's interior. For membrane pore formation, nystatin was used; but seal formation was difficult. Amphotericin was used instead, …

The Socio-Economic Role Of Crude Oil In The United States And Finland, Judith Deak Kallo Oct 1997

The Socio-Economic Role Of Crude Oil In The United States And Finland, Judith Deak Kallo

Theses

Running a company requires daily assessment of opportunities, risks and trends which involve socio-economic changes and scientific uncertainties. Technical-material resources play a major role in the uncertainty of corporate economics. Overproduction combined with increasing efficiencies have resulted in accelerated use and misuse of resources, accompanied by socio-ecological abuses related to wars and pollution. A significant current threat is global warming. As a result of this global challenge several companies have moved towards a more comprehensive environmental business management model. This is seen in corporate management initiating life cycle assessment and risk analysis of their products.

The socio-economic role of crude …

Removal And Recovery Of Vocs And Oils From Surfactant-Flushed Recovered Water By Membrane Permeation, Ashish Nagnath Saraf Oct 1997

Removal And Recovery Of Vocs And Oils From Surfactant-Flushed Recovered Water By Membrane Permeation, Ashish Nagnath Saraf

Theses

Surfactant-enhanced subsurface remediation appears to be capable of removing efficiently contaminants from the source area as well as the concentrated plume. Initial research was conducted on separate removal of trichloroethylene (TCE) and an oil. It was found that oil permeation and modified pervaporation are effective techniques of removing oil and TCE respectively from the simulated feed. It was found that the oil permeation technique can effectively remove 98-99% of oil from an oil-in-water emulsion. The subsurface-entrapped organic pollutants often have high boiling components along with the VOCs. A combined permeation technique is applied here to simultaneously remove TCE and n-dodecane …

Using Heart Variability To Measure The Effects Of Manual Medicine On Autonomic Activity, Michael Zullow Oct 1997

Using Heart Variability To Measure The Effects Of Manual Medicine On Autonomic Activity, Michael Zullow

Theses

A pilot study was performed to test the theory that manual medicine techniques known as the CV4 (compression of fourth cerebral ventricle) maneuver and a sacral hold/iliac bridge hold combination increase parasympathetic activity. Manual medicine techniques are widely practiced by Doctors of Osteopathy and Chiropractors to treat physical and mental health problems. Those who have received manual therapy have reported to experience less pain, better mobility, and a greater feeling of relaxation. To help us learn about the effects of manual therapy, autonomic activity was measured scientifically rather than subjectively in this study by monitoring respiration rate and heart rate, …

Water As A Matter For Human Emotions, Ho-Jeong Jeong

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the plastic image of water as the metaphor for specific human emotions. Given its fluid nature, water itself does not have its own particular form of existence. However, influenced by the external environment, water creates various forms that suggest specific human emotion. These forms are created by forces of nature. I intend to create sculpture of the motion of water that evokes human emotion. The format for the idea is sculpture that consists of structural, repetitive and organized modules. I exploit the repetitive and sequential use of forms that provide an immediate …
