Investigation Of Implementation Techniques For Backpropagation Neural Networks., John Culloty Jan 2004

Investigation Of Implementation Techniques For Backpropagation Neural Networks., John Culloty

Theses

Artificial neural networks are biologically inspired computational methods that have the ability to approximate discrete, real and vector valued target functions. For some problem domains this ability makes neural networks a more appealing solution than traditional computational techniques. Such problem domains typically contain a large number of parameters that are interrelated in a complex and often unknown manner. This makes rule based solutions all but impossible. However another feature of such problem domains is the presence of large volumes of real world data that can be used to tram a neural network until it learns the solution.

The Diarrheic Shellfish Poisoning Toxins In Marine Environment Determined Using Liquid Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry Techniques, Patricia Fernández Puente

Theses

A highly specific and sensitive LC-MS/MS analytical method was developed and validated using gradient reversed phase liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC- MS/MS), interfaced using turbo-assisted electrospray ionisation (ESI) in negative mode for the analysis of DSP (okadaic acid (OA), dinophysistoxins (DTXs) and pectenotoxins (PTXs)) toxins in a variety of samples. There were no matrix effects present, proved by the good reproducibility achieved and the linearity of the calibration curves (r" > 0.999) in spiked mussel samples and standards. A DSP toxin profile study was conducted with bulk phytoplankton and mussels samples from the west coast of Ireland. All the samples were …

The Role Of Environmental Impact Assessment In The Urban Development Process Case Study: Dubai, Uae, Abdulrahman Mohammed Al Sharid

Theses

With no doubt the Urban & Economic Development should persist in Dubai with same current rates to sustain prosperous living conditions for the inhabitants of the Emirate. These rates have exceeded the International rates in some aspects specially those related to Urban Sprawl and Power Consumption, Telecommunication Services, etc.

To insure the continuity of this economic growth, a balance should be established between consumption rates and natural component depletion. To achieve this balance, certain criteria and regulations should occur focusing on Environmental Balance and Environmental Impact Assessment which consider all permutable aspects. So as to avoid multiple negative effects in …

Revealing At The Unraveling, Marie Florence Griffin

Theses

This thesis paper exhibits the progression of my photographic studies over the last two years at The Rochester Institute of Technology. This thesis paper explains the thought process behind the art work and defines the influences and interpretation within each body of work. Through digital processes the work portrays issues of identity that revolve around the body politic through the dictates of Western culture, particularly advertising, on the body's surface. The images also emphasize the emotional responses resulting from the violence, seduction and manipulation that culture presumes on an individual's identity.

Running Head: Trademark Law And Keyword Advertising, Elizabeth Warner

Theses

The growth of the Internet as a commercial medium has brought about new concerns in terms of the future of intellectual property law. The newest form of advertising, keyword advertising, has created much controversy within the legal system. In the latest case, Google, Inc. v. American Wallpaper and Blind Factory, Google has requested that courts make a decision as to what constitutes infringement in terms of the sale of keywords for advertising on the Internet. The case is still in pending process. Through an economic analysis of trademarks and advertising on the Internet, this paper seeks to demonstrate that the …

The Application Of Proteomics To Pseudomonas Putida F1, Han Hoang

Theses

Through years of technology development, the drug industry has been able to synthesize many valuable medicines to provide better health care. However, any time a new medication (or industrial chemical for that matter) is made; it must be tested to ensure that it is not carcinogenic. For years, scientists have worked to design a screening method that is fast, efficient, and reliable. Currently, the most widely-used method used is the Ames test [1]. This test has both strengths and weaknesses which will be discussed. In this project, Two Dimensional Electrophoresis (2DE) is used to monitor protein expression in Pseudomonas putida …

The Semantic Web … Sounds Logical!, Anthony J. Radogna Jr Jan 2004

The Semantic Web … Sounds Logical!, Anthony J. Radogna Jr

Theses

The Semantic Web will be an enabling technology for the future because as all of life's components continue to progress and evolve, the demand on us as humans will continue to increase. Work will expect more productivity; family will demand more quality time, and even leisure activities will be technologically advanced. With these variables in mind, I believe humans will demand technologies that help to simplify this treacherous lifestyle. As patterns already indicate, one of the driving forces of technological development is efficiency. Developers are consistently looking for ways to make life's demands less strenuous and more streamlined. The benefits …

Practical Applications Of Design Semiotics, Amy Bendall Jan 2004

Practical Applications Of Design Semiotics, Amy Bendall

Theses

This thesis explores instructional design and how it can be implemented in a large lecture course in order to improve the comprehension and retention of theoretical design concepts. My thesis was inspired by the difficulty in teaching first year undergraduate students design theory in the required undergraduate course Design Survey. One consistent problem is the student's inability to understand how these abstract concepts apply to them individually and within their academic discipline.

Development Of A Human Visual System With The Ability To Detect Inconsistent Events, Jeremiah D. Brazeau Jan 2004

Development Of A Human Visual System With The Ability To Detect Inconsistent Events, Jeremiah D. Brazeau

Theses

Current research has shown that it is possible to create a general purpose learning system that models the first few layers of the human visual system. The goal of this thesis is to build upon that idea and produce a computational model capable of learning different aspects of visual information. Simulations show that the system is capable of learning and distinguishing different types of motion. Results also give one explanation, consistent with current experiments, explaining how the human visual system learns information and as such may produce the capability to predict behavior in future experiments.

The Convergence Of Traditional Higher Education And E-Learning: Organisational, Societal, Technological And Pedagogical Trends, Gearóid Ó Súilleabháin Jan 2004

The Convergence Of Traditional Higher Education And E-Learning: Organisational, Societal, Technological And Pedagogical Trends, Gearóid Ó Súilleabháin

Theses

The thesis is about the coming together of two traditions and how they are both changing dynamically in relation to each other, giving rise to a number of discernable organisational, societal, technological and pedagogical trends. Each tradition is examined in turn in the first two chapters, which deal with issues such as what the definitional characteristics of each tradition are and what factors have determined them. Organisational and societal trends in the convergence of traditional higher education and e-learning, as described in chapter three, highlight the tensions between the two traditions, as evidenced in the specific challenges e- learning represents …

A Service-Based Architecture For Learning Management Systems Which Supports Personalisation And Collaboration, Markus Schmid Jan 2004

A Service-Based Architecture For Learning Management Systems Which Supports Personalisation And Collaboration, Markus Schmid

Theses

This work develops a service-based architecture for an extensible and customisable learning management system (LMS) runtime environment. The architecture mainly defines interfaces for the interaction of functional system components represented by loosely coupled distributed services. Services that represent functional components of the distributed LMS are called e-leaming services. In addition, underlying infrastructure services provide supportive functionality such as service-lookup within an institution. Users access the system using an LMS portal component that acts as a front-end for the LMS services.

While existing e-leaming environments provide a relatively good coverage of most of the functional requirements defined in this work, they …

Extraction Of Frequency-Dependent Electrical Characteristics Of Biological Tissues Using Ultra-Wideband Electromagnetic Pulse, Michael D. Seymour Jan 2004

Extraction Of Frequency-Dependent Electrical Characteristics Of Biological Tissues Using Ultra-Wideband Electromagnetic Pulse, Michael D. Seymour

Theses

There have been many important contributions to imaging for biomedical applications. The most popular methods include X-ray mammography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, and most recently, microwave imaging. While the first three of these have been used for biomedical applications for over three decades, microwave imaging has seen many developments over the last few years. This is primarily due to the large contrast in electrical parameters between different body tissues (including differences between healthy and diseased tissues) at microwave frequencies. There are also vast improvements possible for the comfort of the patient undergoing such imaging as compared to mammography. However, …

Ancient Promises, Mohamad Rozi Mohd Nor

Theses

The story is about a girl who achieves her mythological destiny through her metamorphosis from a human form to that of a sea turtle which symbolizes universal love, fertility and desire. During preproduction the original concept (see Thesis Proposal in Appendix A) took a dramatic shift, becoming less of a traditional narrative work and evolving more into a visual lyrical form. Ancient Promises begins with the female lead character appearing restless during her strangely frantic investigations on a beach. She hears voices which surprise and intrigue her. Her discovery of a turtle and the loss of her ring increases the …

The Design Of Interface And Function Of Cellular Phones For Old People, Yusuke Oda Jan 2004

The Design Of Interface And Function Of Cellular Phones For Old People, Yusuke Oda

Theses

A cellular phone is hard to handle for older people in terms of interface and function. In this thesis, the word "interface" stands for hardware and software interface and the word "older people" refers to Japanese people who are over 60 years old. Fundamentally, the interface must be easy to handle and convenient. In addition, it must be easy to access all of the functions that the user needs. However, it is questionable whether the interface and function of the present cellular phones are taking older people into consideration. Thus, the purpose of this thesis is to consider new interface …
