Family Tree Manager, Catherine Sullivan
Family Tree Manager, Catherine Sullivan
Theses
Many people are interested in learning about their family history. Discovering who has come before us can help us learn more about who we are, and possibly why we are the way we are. Over the years, more and more people have turned to software products to help them build and manage their family tree information. These products allow users to easily enter and retrieve the information, as well as provide graphical representations without the arduous task of drawing by hand. In addition, some manufacturers have made agreements with genealogy search services, and integrated the process of searching for relatives …

Using 3d Graphic And Animation Software To Enhance Learning Experience In Ged Math, Willy Ochaya
Theses
This study was designed to explore trends in the use of 3D graphics and animation software within an educational context to enhance learning and to promote the use of calculators for a broader learning experience. This study targeted students in the GED component of Threshold Center for Alternative Youth Development who specifically were preparing to take the math section of the examination. Evidence from an array of studies (Simonson & Thompson, 1994; Weller, (1996); Lazarowitz and Huppert (1993); Yalcinalp, Geban, and Ozkan (1995) indicates that (computer technology in the classroom can have a positive impact on students learning, in terms …
Visualizing The Inner Structure Of N-Body Data, Edward Dale
Visualizing The Inner Structure Of N-Body Data, Edward Dale
Theses
N-body simulations produce a large amount of data that must be visualized in order to extract interesting features. This data consists of thousands of particles, each with a number of properties such as velocity, mass, and acceleration, that are persisted across hundreds of time steps. Rendering these points using traditional means quickly leads to a image that is satu- rated because the number of particles is greater than the number of pixels available. Volume rendering, and particularly splatting, seeks to remedy this and allows one to see inside the volume and discern the inner structure. The definition of inner structure …

Predictors Of Reading Success For Hispanic Children Learning To Read In English, Therese A. Lawson
Predictors Of Reading Success For Hispanic Children Learning To Read In English, Therese A. Lawson
Theses
The utility of the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) for documenting the reading progress of English Language Learners (ELLs) was investigated. Relationships among the DIBELS measures were explored using a correlational matrix. The predictive validity of the DIBELS for determining later literacy outcomes was assessed via a series of step-wise regressions. Results suggest that the DIBELS are valid for assessing the reading progress of Spanish-speaking ELLs. Growth was seen on all measures and established DIBELS benchmarks were generally met on time. Differing from previous findings, PSF did not positively correlate with NWF for first graders, and only …

Includes thesis proposal, revised script, original story boards, color stills, and code for generating facial expressions.
Expression Of Tumor Suppressor Genes During Breast Cancer Progression In The Rat, Wafa Saqer Rashid Abdullah Aldhaheri
Expression Of Tumor Suppressor Genes During Breast Cancer Progression In The Rat, Wafa Saqer Rashid Abdullah Aldhaheri
Theses
Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer and the leading cause of cancer deaths among women in the United Arab Emirates and all over the world. Although many factors contribute to the high incidence of breast cancer, a considerable number of cases are related to environmental factors. In this study, breast cancer was induced in female rats using a single dose, 80 mg/kg body wt, of the environmental carcinogen 7,12- dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA). The aim was to characterize some of the early cellular and molecular changes that occur during breast cancer development in the DMBA-treated rat model. Mammary gland …

Proteomic Studies Of Pseudomonas Putida Kt2440 In Carcinogenicity Screening Via 2-Dimensional Gel Electrophoresis, Mingyi Yao
Theses
This project is part of a pilot study designed to establish a two dimensional gel electrophoresis-based protocol, which can be utilized in screening mutagencity/carcinogencity of uncharacterized substances. Currently, the Ames test is the most commonly used method, which is solely based on mutation at the genome level. In contrast to the genome, which is static, protein expression in a cell under a given set of conditions (the proteome) is dynamic. A screening method based on the proteome rather than the genome may prove more reliable and quantitative in predicting mutagenicity and carcinogenicity. In this project, Pseudomonas putida KT2440 was employed …

The Environmental Gradients And Plant Communities Of Bergen Swamp, N.Y., U.S.A., Aaron Hall
Theses
No survey of plant communities has been performed recently in the Bergen Swamp, NY, USA, a unique strongly minerotrophic mire with active marl deposition. In summer 2004, I established an array of randomly placed plots throughout Bergen Swamp survey plant communities. The plant survey included stem counts of herbaceous plant species and shrubs within 1m square quadrats. I performed a Raup and Crick clustering analysis at two different spatial scales to group plant communities and found that there were five communities at the subplot level, and three communities at the plot level. I then used detrended correspondence analysis (DCA), an …

Investigation Of A Coupled Duffing Oscillator System In A Varying Potential Field, Joseph Patrick O'Day
Investigation Of A Coupled Duffing Oscillator System In A Varying Potential Field, Joseph Patrick O'Day
Theses
Nonlinear systems are known to exhibit widely differing steady-state behaviors based on small modifications to the control parameters within the equations. These small modifications may be the difference between a chaotic output and a periodic output. Many investigators choose to study the varying behaviors through varying forcing conditions, specifically the forcing amplitude or frequency. However, from a linear vibration theory standpoint, systems are often "tuned" to minimize system response to a known forcing input by varying the strength of the damping and stiffness elements within the system. It may also be the case that the parameters governing the strengths of …

Incorporating Adventure Education Into Your Classroom, Dana Romanello
Theses
Approaching outdoor adventure and challenge as a way to teach perseverance, skill, teamwork, leadership, and compassionate service was the brain-child of Kurt Hahn, a native to Berlin, Germany. Hahn became aware of the enormous impact that German submarines had on British ships in the North Sea during World War II. Drawing from his experiences as an educator, he and a team of others devised a program of intensive training for British Seamen. The program became known as Outward Bound, from the nautical term for a ship leaving port on a sea journey. (Sakofs& Armstrong, 1996)

An educational product has been developed based on a review of the literature in the field of art therapy with a focus on how art therapy may affect the communication of deaf children. A literature review has indicated that art therapy, when conducted with hearing and deaf children, has facilitated expression and communication. This has occurred through transference of feelings from the right, visualspatial and creative hemisphere of the brain to the left hemisphere, which includes conceptual and intellectual thinking as well as the 'language function.' Based on these findings, it is projected that art therapy may alleviate some of …
Journal Writing Within Deaf Education, Clare Cassidy
Journal Writing Within Deaf Education, Clare Cassidy
Theses
Writing has generally always been a source of resentment, aversion and unhappiness for deaf people. It shouldn't be. When one mentions an English writing course, one would involuntarily envision a long class of boring lectures on parts of speech, sentence structures and know their written paper will return all bloody from those red markers. This has to change, the unconscious fear of English within Deaf people affects their academic, personal and social growth.
