Fancy Nancy Blues, Xuemei Song
Fancy Nancy Blues, Xuemei Song
Theses
"Fancy Nancy Blues" is an animated graduate thesis film that is three minutes and thirty seconds long, based on sound cues that lead into images. It tells the story of a woman that plays the piano. She finds herself dreaming of romance, until other sounds interrupt her. This continues until her normal-looking husband returns home. He is a normal working man -- not the one she dreams of -- but she accepts her reality and meets him with a kiss. This film is a hand-drawn animation that was produced in TV Paint Animation, Photoshop, and traditional watercolor. The film was …
Order Out Of Chaos: The Growth Of Botanical Science In Nineteenth Century St. Louis, Nuala F. Caomhánach
Order Out Of Chaos: The Growth Of Botanical Science In Nineteenth Century St. Louis, Nuala F. Caomhánach
Theses
This thesis places the botanical community in nineteenth century St. Louis back in the centre of the development of botanical science in the United States. Historical models have been focused on east-coast centers, favoring the research of closet botanists in Philadelphia and Harvard University. By reevaluating the scientific research of collectors and residents in St. Louis it reveals the crucial role the community played in the emergence of a particularly American form of botany. In its early development, visiting naturalists explored and sent their collections to Philadelphia to be classified. By mid-century, resident botanists, such as Dr. George Engelmann, collaborated …
Creatures And Environments, Daniel Stevens
Creatures And Environments, Daniel Stevens
Theses
I am interested in how things are formed or made both by natural events and by man. The history and story of the environment we inhabit greatly influences my work. I reorganize materials in ways that twist how they may actually develop left to nature. Nature does some very strange and difficult to explain things and I am looking to make the viewer question the boundaries between nature and manmade. My jewelry is similar to a collected specimen, seemingly distant from where it originated but still bearing the evidence of its origin. In this body of work I hope to …
Already Gone, Manuel Fermin Hernandez Marquez
Already Gone, Manuel Fermin Hernandez Marquez
Theses
Already Gone is a project that explores the relationship of the photographic medium to the concepts of time and history, and the several temporal and historical layers contained within any photographic image. It is heavily influenced by photo-conceptualist practices that were introduced in the 1960s that often employed a de-skilled aesthetic, and questioned photography's intrinsic characteristics, possibilities, and limitations. Already Gone is inspired by the ideas of artistic agency in a time where the end of history and the beginning of post-history is proposed, and in the effects the demise of analog photography might have in the indexical nature of …
A Qualitative Examination Of Recent Public Participation Activities In Association With Ecosystem Management In The Great Lakes, Erin Muench
Theses
Government approaches to the management of the North American Great Lakes have evolved following the introduction of ecosystem management principles in the 1978 Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement between the United States and Canada. This approach was adopted as a way to address the complexities associated with the interconnections between the air, land, and water in the Great Lakes basin and its more than 30 million inhabitants. Although there is no universally accepted definition of ecosystem management, a key element is stakeholder participation in policy formulation and implementation to validate decisions within the public sphere. In this thesis I assess …
Impartial Validity, Salah Ahmed
Impartial Validity, Salah Ahmed
Theses
Impartial Validity probes the relationship between self-representation and self-validation. This probing arises from an unsatisfied attempt to validate my own trauma associated with combat and selfhood. I find myself drawn to photograph banal objects that seem to reflect me, using representation to authenticate the experience of trauma. I feel a connection with these objects before I photograph them. Yet, once I have rendered them as images, I discover that the tenuous connections between the objects and myself were wholly created by the potential of the camera in my original encounter. These connections have little or no reality outside of the …

A Cart, A Box, A Gps: A Luggage Cart And A Clip Style Information Device Design From The View Of Universal Design, Sunyoung Stephanie Kim
Theses
The existing design of the airport luggage cart, which is intended to help travelers carry multiples pieces of luggage, has some issues. Also, the travelers sometimes are challenged to get information or to communicate with the workers at the airports especially when people travel outside of their mother country. These issues show that the airport needs a new luggage cart that is designed under the aspect of Universal Design. Therefore, this study proposed a new luggage cart design and the possibility of it to provide better service for all.
Perception Based Heterogeneous Subsurface Scattering For Film, Laura Wieme
Perception Based Heterogeneous Subsurface Scattering For Film, Laura Wieme
Theses
Many real world materials exhibit complex subsurface scattering of light. This internal light interaction creates the perception of translucency for the human visual system. Translucent materials and simulation of the subsurface scattering of light has become an expected necessity for generating warmth and realism in computer generated imagery. The light transport within heterogenous materials, such as marble, has proved challenging to model and render. The current material models available to digital artists have been limited to homogeneous subsurface scattering despite a few publications documenting success at simulating heterogeneous light transport. While the publications successfully simulate this complex phenomenon, the material …

The Effect Of Magnesium On Angiogenesis Evaluated Utilizing The Chick Chorioallantoic Membrane Assay, Lauren Ashlee Douglas-Byrd
Theses
Magnesium and magnesium alloys are emerging as possible novel biodegradable materials for medical implants such as cardiovascular stents. Understanding the angiogenic properties of magnesium would increase the level of knowledge regarding the healing process once the material is implanted. The chick chorioallantoic membrane assay is an effective, inexpensive method of assessing magnesium's angiogenic properties. The assay is more informative than an in vitro model, in terms of magnesium degradation environment, and provides similar results of an in vivo model. This model can be used as a preliminary method of assessing results before investing labor and finances into larger in vivo …
Implementing A Dynamic Scaling Of Web Applications In A Virtualized Cloud Computing Environment, Mohammed Aljebreen
Implementing A Dynamic Scaling Of Web Applications In A Virtualized Cloud Computing Environment, Mohammed Aljebreen
Theses
Cloud computing is becoming more essential day by day. The allure of the cloud is the significant value and benefits that people gain from it, such as reduced costs, increased storage, flexibility, and more mobility. Flexibility is one of the major benefits that cloud computing can provide in terms of scaling up and down the infrastructure of a network. Once traffic has increased on one server within the network, a load balancer instance will route incoming requests to a healthy instance, which is less busy and less burdened. When the full complement of instances cannot handle any more requests, past …
Biocompatibility Of Magnesium-Based Biomaterials For Airway Stent Applications, Sara Dolly Tatum
Biocompatibility Of Magnesium-Based Biomaterials For Airway Stent Applications, Sara Dolly Tatum
Theses
Tracheomalacia, stenosis and other traumatic airway injuries (e.g., obstructive tracheobronchial tumors) often require airway stenting. Traditional polymeric stents are prone to cause infection, do not ‘grow’ with a child and often require surgical removal. Therefore, resorbable biometallics are ideal materials for tracheal stent devices. Magnesium (Mg) is an attractive material because of its biocompatibility, abundance within the human body, and intrinsic corrosive nature can be overcome via alloying elements. We hypothesize that resorbable magnesium-based materials can be utilized for the development of tracheal stents. The objective of the present study was to determine cytocompatibility of Mg alloys with fully differentiated …

Synthesis Of Pcl/Keratin Composite Nanofibers For Nerve Repair Application, Angela Michelle Edwards
Synthesis Of Pcl/Keratin Composite Nanofibers For Nerve Repair Application, Angela Michelle Edwards
Theses
In the past decade, a wide variety of biomaterials comprised of both synthetic and natural polymers have been used to promote restoration of injured peripheral nerves. Despite making advances, none have matched performance of autographs, a gold standard in nerve repair. Mammalian-derived, protein-based conduits have shown good tissue biocompatibility and safe degradation products, but are mechanically fragile. Synthetic materials such as Polycaprolactone (PCL) typically have advantage of suitable mechanical properties and fine degradation rate tunability, but lack cell recognition signaling. Recent studies have shown that keratin promotes nerve cell attachment, differentiation and growth, but alone, it cannot be used as …

The Effectiveness Of Small Scale Photovoltaic (Pv) Systems Design And Cost Analysis Simulation On Saudi Arabian Economy, Faris Abdullah Almansour
Theses
The advantages of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) are much more than the disadvantages, RES such as solar, wind energy, biomass, and geothermal, which can be used for generating distributed power but cannot directly replace the existing electric energy grid technologies. The latter are far too well established to abandon, while the new RES technologies are not sufficiently developed to meet the total energy demand. Therefore, it is sensible to gradually infuse RES into existing grids and transform the system over time Saudi Arabia (SA) is a semi-developed nation with a population of over twenty nine million people. It is the …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Boronic Acid Chalcones As Potential Cancer Chemoprevention Drug Candidates, Davia Lauren Mckoy
Theses
Carcinogenesis is the transformation of a normal cell into a cancerous cell. Cancer chemoprevention is the use of natural and synthetic compounds to stop carcinogenesis. These compounds have been labeled chemopreventives and they take advantage of the human body's natural defenses to stop carcinogenesis. Chalcones have demonstrated antibacterial, antifungal, antitumor, and anti-inflammatory properties. In this project, chalcones and their derivatives are synthesized with the goal to be used as possible chemopreventives. We believe that when tested on cancer cell lines, the boronic acid derivative will show greater chemopreventive activity because of the boronic acid's increased bioavailability. We have synthesized and …

Using Multiple Air Models To Form A Superensemble, Frank Gronwald
Using Multiple Air Models To Form A Superensemble, Frank Gronwald
Theses
Determining the level of air pollution is a modern day necessity for government regulators and industrialized sources. Air dispersion models are often used to determine the concentration of a pollutant. However changing conditions and several assumptions made by the models limit their accuracy at various times. This research proposed combining four different air dispersion models (Gaussian Plume, Variable K Theory, Box, and AFTOX) into a superensemble. Since the superensemble is typically more accurate than its member models, the end result should be a more accurate prediction under any condition. In the interest of evaluating performance, the change in accuracy was …
