Dilemma, Yeliz Okdem Ates May 2016

Dilemma, Yeliz Okdem Ates

Theses

I am currently exploring ways to express the spiritual essence of the space between life and death afterlife. As an artist I have always been interested in nature and animals, however birds have an intense personal connection to me. Of personal interest is the common childhood hobby of folding paper into abstract and stylized forms. This inspiration for the work comes from traditional origami, a technique I will modify through ceramic sculpture. Some of my previous works are also related to origami. I used plaster slabs to make models and molds. I find that the stylization of folding paper in …

Dragon NaturallySpeaking, a commercially available automatic speech recognition engine, was chosen for the development of the proposed HRI. In order to achieve the goal, the Dragon software is used to create custom commands (or macros) which must satisfy the tasks of (a) directly controlling the robot with voice, (b) writing a robot program with voice, and (c) developing a HRI which allows the human and robot to communicate with each other using speech. The key is …

The Home, Memory, And Materialism Explored Through Landscape, Kelly Wilton May 2016

The Home, Memory, And Materialism Explored Through Landscape, Kelly Wilton

Theses

Moving from Arizona two years ago meant editing down my possessions to fit in the back of a pickup truck that my best friend, two cats, and I shared for three days. I have been moving on average about once a year since I was fourteen. This nomadic lifestyle meant constantly having to get rid of things that felt unimportant and insignificant. Certain things, however, have survived the moves. Throughout my nomadic lifestyle, the bedroom became a curated space for possessions put on display, showcasing the importing things I own. In my travels, landscape and house became equally important in …

Posthaste, Carolyn Depp

Theses

Posthaste is a short, stop-motion animated film that follows the narrative of an absent-minded teenage boy who must race to drop a letter in a distant mailbox before the mail truck arrives for its last pickup. This narrative framework is structured to allow for the exploration and experimentation with multiple animation styles. The goal was to not only practice various walk cycles at different speeds, but to also have the character emote broadly, in a more cartoonish style, and with smaller, subtler movements, all while maintaining the believability that these were all expressions of the same individual and were in …

Team Igniter: An Adaptive Toolkit To Guide And Leverage Collaboration In Teams Seeking To Problem-Solve And Innovate, Vinicius De Andrade Romualdo

Theses

Even though interdisciplinarity has been constantly debated and supported during faculty meetings at RIT, still, academic programs confine themselves into silos, hampering student integration. The struggle to effectively collaborate becomes evident in the existent on campus initiatives that challenge students from different disciplines to work together. The consequence is the under-utilization of the students' potential which leads to mediocre outcomes.

This thesis investigated main collaboration problems typical of groups seeking to problem-solve such as groupthink, production blocking, social loafing and social anxiety. These issues were studied in the academic context through a user-centered methodology that involved observations and interviews with …

Determining The Impact Of Latitude On Parturition Timing In Captive North American River Otters: A Statistical Analysis Of Aza Studbook Records, Jordan I. Bailey

Theses

Historically, North American river otters (Lontra canadensis) were widely dispersed throughout the North American continent. Trapping pressures and urbanization have led to regional exclusion of North American river otter populations from historic habitats, leading the Association of Zoos and Aquariums to spearhead conservation and captive breeding efforts to maintain genetic diversity of the aquatic mustelid. Difficulties in consistently breeding captive North American river otters have spotlighted a need to understand how geography and life history of adult individuals influence reproductive events. This study analyzed the AZA studbook records for all litters born in captivity from 2008 to 2014 (N = …

Vertourist: Providing Accuracy In Language Translations, Using An Online Workforce, Shubhneek Dhillon May 2016

Vertourist: Providing Accuracy In Language Translations, Using An Online Workforce, Shubhneek Dhillon

Theses

Language is our greatest mediator that allows us to relate to and understand each other. Linguistic boundaries cause a massive downside for travelers. They often find it difficult to communicate with locals in another country to learn more about the foreign culture, country, aesthetics and life. It’s even more critical for the people who are deaf.

Human generated translation is much more accurate than computer generated translation. Travelers often rely on computer-generated translation that result in more confusion when the person is trying to communicate with in a foreign language. My thesis will address this issue using social media. A …

Development Of A System Model For An Indirect Passive Solar Dryer With Experimental Validation, Samantha Huselstein May 2016

Development Of A System Model For An Indirect Passive Solar Dryer With Experimental Validation, Samantha Huselstein

Theses

Solar crop drying is a cheap and effective way to preserve food material, especially in developing countries where fuel and electricity are expensive or unavailable. Some tropical fruits are difficult to transport and store leading to significant spoilage. Without access to fuel and large drying systems, preserving fruits for later use is challenging or not possible for the rural farmer. Developing low-cost, easily assembled locally and low maintenance fruit drying systems would improve access to off-season and distant markets. A mathematical model of an indirect passive solar drying system was developed to design and optimize drying systems for use in …

This research seeks to address the question of whether two of Belize’s most-read newspapers, the Reporter and the Amandala, have more sensational stories in their headlines, and how these stories compare to government and other human interest news. A sample of 120 front-page headlines/stories spanning a five-year period – from January 2010 …

Pinups And Pinball: The Sexualized Female Image In Pinball Artwork, Melissa A. Fanton May 2016

Pinups And Pinball: The Sexualized Female Image In Pinball Artwork, Melissa A. Fanton

Theses

Since the commercialization of pinball in the 1930s, the pinball industry has used art and imagery to promote the pinball machine as a product and to generate and cultivate its audience. Much of that imagery has relied on sexualizing and stereotyping women to appeal to a presumed male player. In this thesis, I explore how the depiction of women on pinball machines has evolved from the 1930s to 1970s, with a specific focus on artwork from 1970 to 1979. This is followed by an examination of how second wave feminism, popular culture, and the introduction of film licensing may (or …

In Vitro Regeneration And Marker Assisted Evaluation Of Genetic Fidelity In Endangered Tree Species Moringa Peregrina (Forsk) Fiori, Salama Mohammed Al Dhaheri

Theses

Moringa peregrina is a native plant in the United Arab Emirates; it is called “Shua”.It is an endangered species with important nutritive and medicinal properties. It shows high adaptability to the arid condition with short germination time after irrigation. Unmanaged grazing and slow regeneration rate after browsing leads to the endangerment of the species causing erosion in biodiversity. One way to protect these rare species is by multiplying the planting material through tissue culture system and re-introducing at the habitat. Micro propagation is an in vitro method used for plant clonal multiplication under controlled condition. This technique allows conserving the …

The Evolution Of Inequity Aversion: Nonhuman Primate Responses To Unequal Reward Distributions, Jessica Feller May 2016

The Evolution Of Inequity Aversion: Nonhuman Primate Responses To Unequal Reward Distributions, Jessica Feller

Theses

Inequity aversion, the negative response to receiving an unequal reward, has been intensely studied and is well established in humans. However, why humans developed a profound sense of equity is still enigmatic, and the evolutionary roots of this interesting phenomenon are still largely unknown. The little research that has been completed on nonhuman primates indicates that some species, like humans, are inequity averse, while others are not. Brosnan and de Waal (2003) suggested that an aversion to inequitable outcomes coevolved as a response to an increased emphasis on cooperative relationships, where individuals would respond negatively when their rewards differed from …

The Brontë Attachment Novels: An Examination Of The Development Of Proto-Attachment Narratives In The Nineteenth Century, James Mcnierney May 2016

The Brontë Attachment Novels: An Examination Of The Development Of Proto-Attachment Narratives In The Nineteenth Century, James Mcnierney

Theses

John Bowlby’s work on attachment theory in the 1960s altered the cultural understanding of parent-child relationships. Bowlby argued that the ability for an individual to form attachments later in life, be that familial, romantic, or friendship is affected by whether or not that individual formed a strong attachment to a primary caregiver in early childhood. My thesis uses Bowlby’s theory as a critical lens to examine three novels by the Brontës: Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Brontë. I use this theory in order to demonstrate that these …

Down, Down, Baby, Ciara M. Duffy May 2016

Down, Down, Baby, Ciara M. Duffy

Theses

The series Down, Down, Baby is a visual diary, a documentation of the transitory period of my youth: the moments of freedom, debauchery, and recklessness I experienced with my closest companions. These individuals exist in these moments as a symbol for an undeniable attitude within youth culture that is greater than themselves. Down, Down, Baby illustrates our early reactions to independence and the animals we wanted to be and were, as well as the desire to stay young and relative by creating spectacles of ourselves. This way of living defies the logic of refined sensibility, political correctness, and good taste …

Variables That Influence Preference For Response Cost, Isaac M. Nzuki May 2016

Variables That Influence Preference For Response Cost, Isaac M. Nzuki

Theses

Few researchers have compared preference for reinforcement and response cost within a token economy, and the results have shown that preference varies among individuals (e.g., Donaldson et al., 2014; Iwata & Bailey, 1974; Jowett Hirst et al., 2016). Preference for response cost is an interesting phenomenon because response cost is a punishment procedure and is often considered aversive. Therefore, identifying the variables that influence preference for response cost is an important area of research. Some authors have suggested that the immediate delivery or presence of tokens might influence preference for response cost, but these variables have yet to be experimentally …
