A Differential Construct Methodology For Modelling Predictive Cultural Values, Béatrice Boufoy -Bastick
A Differential Construct Methodology For Modelling Predictive Cultural Values, Béatrice Boufoy -Bastick
The Qualitative Report
This paper presents an explanatory model of cultural behaviours, which resulted from a four-year ethnographic study of the different academic attainments in English of indigenous Fijians and the Indo-Fijians in the Fiji Islands. Fiji is a natural laboratory for investigating differential cultural behaviours because of these two culturally distinct main ethnic groups. Their different cultural behaviours were found to serve different values within each culture. A three-construct grounded model of these different values emerged from observations and analyses of these behaviours. These constructs were then de-constructed to define and explain a fourth target construct of their Differential Teaching Behaviours, which …
Music As A Metaphor For Thesis Writing, Gertina J. Van Schalkwyk
Music As A Metaphor For Thesis Writing, Gertina J. Van Schalkwyk
The Qualitative Report
In the final throws of writing a doctoral thesis the struggle was to find a structure for presenting the vast amounts of literature that had to be integrated and synthesised to form a coherent whole and linking psychology and music, the basis for my thesis. As a systems theorist and adherent to social constructionist views, the metaphor plays an important role in constructing realities, and the framework that came to mind for structuring and presenting my thesis was that of the concerto from the Western classical music genre. In this paper I will explain how this metaphor was used for …
The Technicity Paradigm And Scientism In Qualitative Research, Carol J. Steiner
The Technicity Paradigm And Scientism In Qualitative Research, Carol J. Steiner
The Qualitative Report
This philosophical paper suggests that almost all academic research, including qualitative research, is conducted under the influence of a "technicity paradigm" which values objectivity, generalisability and rationality. This paper explores, from a Heideggerian perspective, the fundamental characteristics of research under the influence of technicity and discusses how these characteristics manifest in qualitative research. It includes a reflection on what qualitative research might be like if it could escape the influence of technicity and realise its potential for inclusive and relevant knowledge making.
Factors Related To Community Mobilization And Continued Involvement In A Community-Based Effort To Enhance Adolescents' Sexual Behaviour, Christine Joffres, Deborah Langille, Janet Rigby, Donald B. Langille
Factors Related To Community Mobilization And Continued Involvement In A Community-Based Effort To Enhance Adolescents' Sexual Behaviour, Christine Joffres, Deborah Langille, Janet Rigby, Donald B. Langille
The Qualitative Report
Purpose: This article describes and proposes a model of the factors that influenced community members' initial mobilization, continuing effort, or lack of involvement in a community based-intervention on adolescents' sexual health in Nova Scotia, Canada. Design: This study was conducted within the constructivist paradigm and guided by the principles of grounded theory. Methods: Factors related to community members' initial and continued involvement were explored using analyses of the contents of in-depth interviews and written documentation through pattern identification, clustering of conceptual groupings, identification of relationships between variables, constant comparisons, and theoretical memos. Subjects: Respondents included 14 participants, the 12 members …
Community Practice: A Training Ground For Social Work Students, Mylo G. Jennings
Community Practice: A Training Ground For Social Work Students, Mylo G. Jennings
The Qualitative Report
Providing services to communities while providing education and training for social work practice in communities is at the core of this paper. These activities are discussed and reviewed in the context of social work in communities. Social work field placements (internships) in communities can provide positive learning experiences for students and excellent services to communities. The Winslow Project, a two-year community-focused placement for two group of first year master of social work (M.S.W.) Students is described and the results of this project are discussed. In order to fulfill a commitment to the community concept, students need a well-defined concept of …
Exploring The Creative Voice In An Academic Context, Laura Brearley
Exploring The Creative Voice In An Academic Context, Laura Brearley
The Qualitative Report
Who we are changes what we write about and how we write. Simply stated, if the academy is to change, if our views of reality are to be more inclusive, then we need to take a broader view of authorial voices… Tierney and Lincoln, 1997 This paper challenges the traditional paradigm of densely referenced text and the use of a passive, 'neutral' researcher's voice. It draws on current doctoral research that is using creative modes of data representation to examine managers' experiences of transition in organisational life. Within this research, ten managers from an educational institution are being tracked through …

Case Study Of Classroom Practice: A Quiet Form Of Research, Janice Showler
Case Study Of Classroom Practice: A Quiet Form Of Research, Janice Showler
The Qualitative Report
This paper documents the use of ethnographic research methods as a heuristic for inquiry and teaching. More specifically, it focuses on reflection as situated at the heart of teacher-research, including research conducted by prospective English language arts teachers. In a retrospective analysis of her student's case studies in literacy at an urban site, a teacher researcher explores whether and how her students come to "know their knowledge." She explores students' construction of knowledge and theories of practice, how these develop over time and what impact they may have on teaching and learning. These constructions inform not only her students' practice …
Focus Groups In Ethnography Of Communication: Expanding Topics Of Inquiry Beyond Participant Observation, Elizabeth A. Suter
Focus Groups In Ethnography Of Communication: Expanding Topics Of Inquiry Beyond Participant Observation, Elizabeth A. Suter
The Qualitative Report
Historically, ethnography of communication has viewed participant observation as the central and necessary methodological point of departure for any ethnographic endeavor. However, as this article illustrates, this becomes problematic when particular topics of inquiry do not provide ample opportunities for observation. After struggles to participant observe conversations on women's marital naming practices, I was able to research this topic and produce participant observation-like understandings after I incorporated focus groups into my methods. Based upon these experiences and study, this article urges ethnography of communication scholars to step outside their traditional methodological practices, when necessary, and integrate the focus group method …
Feminist Content Analysis And Representative Characters, Patricia Leavy
Feminist Content Analysis And Representative Characters, Patricia Leavy
The Qualitative Report
This paper details textual, visual and audio-visual content analysis from both a general and feminist perspective. It provides a backstage look at how I took an abstract idea of analyzing the larger socio-cultural-political American 1990s/2000 context through a representative fictional character, Ally McBeal, and created a manageable project outline for how to achieve my research goals using content analysis in multiple way

Reconstructing The World Of The Anorectic Outpatient: Procedures For Enhancing Trustworthiness And Credibility, Steven R. Thomsen, J. Kelley Mccoy, Marleen Williams
The Qualitative Report
Conducting in-depth interviews with clinical populations often poses a number of problems for qualitative researchers. Because of the skewed perception of themselves and the world around them, and because of their propensity to distort and deny the pathology of their illness, anorexic women are an example of one such group that can create possible problems for researchers, particularly those concerned with the trustworthiness and credibility of their analysis. How should qualitative researchers approach this population? How can a credible reconstruction of reality be produced? This paper explores and discusses the procedures utilized by the authors during an 18-month project in …
Critical Examinations Of The Known And The Unknown In Social Science: Where Do We Go From Here?, Cynthia Wallat, Carolyn L. Piazza
Critical Examinations Of The Known And The Unknown In Social Science: Where Do We Go From Here?, Cynthia Wallat, Carolyn L. Piazza
The Qualitative Report
If the use of social science assumptions and beliefs is what helped set fields of professional practice on the quest for recognition in the academy, what does the recent outpouring of publications on the limits of science reveal about sociocultural research prospects at the dawn of the 21st century? The last few years alone have witnessed the publication of special journal issues on the "scientific wars" of the nineties, year long professional association debates on "the known and unknown," and new books and online data sources proclaiming "the end of social science." Cumulatively, research and commentary on the limits of …
Preparing Teachers For Urban Settings: Changing Teacher Education By Changing Ourselves, Colleen Willard-Holt
Preparing Teachers For Urban Settings: Changing Teacher Education By Changing Ourselves, Colleen Willard-Holt
The Qualitative Report
This article describes the personal and professional changes experienced by a teacher education faculty who embarked on a joint project relating to urban education. The faculty members committed to write book chapters applying their areas of expertise to the challenge of preparing teachers for urban schools. Using qualitative methodology, this research examined the faculty members' discoveries, thoughts, doubts, and reflections at three points during the project. Results showed an evolving perspective on urban education focusing upon understanding the lived experiences of the children in order to provide meaningful education for them. This study may provide insight and encouragement for other …
Researching Psychotherapy, The Importance Of The Client's View: A Methodological Challenge, Neil Scott Gordon
Researching Psychotherapy, The Importance Of The Client's View: A Methodological Challenge, Neil Scott Gordon
The Qualitative Report
This paper argues that research approaches which are aimed at developing our understanding of psychotherapy which fail to address the client's interpretation of events will only provide a limited picture of its true nature. The discussion explores the philosophical underpinnings of research in this area through analysing contemporary debates and controversies. The difficulties of defining the term "psychotherapy" are acknowledged while highlighting the centrality of the concept of relationship in current definitions. The question "What is psychotherapy?" is further addressed by offering a brief overview of the theoretical assumptions which influence some current approaches to clinical work. Attention is also …
Navigating The "Seven C'S": Curiosity, Confirmation, Comparison, Changing, Collaborating, Critiquing, And Combinations, Ron J. Chenail
Navigating The "Seven C'S": Curiosity, Confirmation, Comparison, Changing, Collaborating, Critiquing, And Combinations, Ron J. Chenail
The Qualitative Report
It is important for researchers to establish a research posture (i.e., the relationship a researcher wants to have with his or her subject or other) (Wolcott, 1992) and making subsequent methodological choices in which all cohere and are consistent with the ascribed posture. By keeping things plumb in this manner, researchers can greatly increase the chances that their projects will be internally coherent and imminently more do-able than those studies which grow out-of-alignment. A method for assessing research posture, the "Seven C's," is presented and a series of questions are introduced to help researchers match their postures with particular research …
Patterns Of Talk: A Micro-Landscape Perspective, Jerry Gale
Patterns Of Talk: A Micro-Landscape Perspective, Jerry Gale
The Qualitative Report
This paper provides a introduction to conversation analysis. CA is traced from its roots to ethnomethodology, and five features of talk are examined (turn taking procedures, adjacency pairs, presequences, formulations, and accounts). Clinical examples are provided. The relevance of CA to clinicians, researchers and supervisors is also discussed.

Constant Comparison Method: A Kaleidoscope Of Data, Jane F. Dye, Irene M. Schatz, Brian A. Rosenberg, Susanne T. Coleman
The Qualitative Report
This paper will attempt to illustrate the use of a kaleidoscope metaphor as a template for the organization and analysis of qualitative research data. It will provide a brief overview of the constant comparison method, examining such processes as categorization, comparison, inductive analysis, and refinement of data bits and categories. Graphic representations of our metaphoric kaleidoscope will be strategically interspersed throughout this paper.
Application Of A Case Study Methodology, Winston M. Tellis
Application Of A Case Study Methodology, Winston M. Tellis
The Qualitative Report
In the preceding article (Tellis, 1997), the goals and objectives were presented and explained in detail. In this article, the methodology to accomplish those goals and objectives will be examined. The reader will become familiar with the specific techniques that are used in the current study, and supported by the literature that was reviewed in the previous article. That methodology will follow the recommendation of Yin (1994) and has four stages: Design the case study, Conduct the case study, Analyze the case study evidence, and Develop the conclusions, recommendations and implications. The article begins with an introduction, that includes some …
Multi-Visual Qualitative Method: Observing Social Groups In Mass Media, George Tsourvakas
Multi-Visual Qualitative Method: Observing Social Groups In Mass Media, George Tsourvakas
The Qualitative Report
In reviewing the bibliography upon which qualitative method is based, the author refers to ethnography, ethnomethdology, symbolic interactionism and cultural studies, and argues that a combination of the qualitative methods is actually possible. To enforce his point, he gives the example of research that was recently conducted about the National Television Channel of Greece. Moreover, through the theoretical review, he asserts that the application of all qualitative methods is a way to transfer ourselves from observation to focusing and depth interviews. He believes that such an application can be really effective while collecting data as well as while analyzing and …
European Politics Of Citizenship, Juan M. Delgado-Moreira
European Politics Of Citizenship, Juan M. Delgado-Moreira
The Qualitative Report
During the past five years, the European Union has been trying to sponsor a coming of age of European Identity awareness across national borders. In doing so, EU administration intends to square the circle of European Union as the super nation-state of the nation states of Europe. However prompted or justified by the political or economic context, it is noteworthy to what extent the texts of European statutes and policies lack theoretical alternatives to the territorial and relatively homogeneous state. In order for it not to become a threat perceived by the population in identity terms, the apparently forthcoming idea …
Can Sociological Research Be Qualitative, Critical And Valid?, David Wainwright
Can Sociological Research Be Qualitative, Critical And Valid?, David Wainwright
The Qualitative Report
Qualitative Research is enjoying a new found respectability in medical sociology, derived in part from an increasing willingness to submit to positivist criteria of reliability and validity. Whilst such claims to 'scientific' credibility have raised the status of the approach, this has only been achieved by driving a wedge between ethnographic methods of data-collection and their origins in the phenomenological strands of sociological thought. One consequence of this schism has been to rob qualitative research of its critical potential, transforming it from a means of challenging discursive formations into a mechanism of surveillance. This paper defines the broad contours of …
Sensemaking In Clinical Qualitative Research, Ronald J. Chenail, Paul V. Maione
Sensemaking In Clinical Qualitative Research, Ronald J. Chenail, Paul V. Maione
The Qualitative Report
When therapists research clinical populations or situations from a qualitative research perspective, their task is different from when researchers conduct their own clinical qualitative studies. With researchers, the study at hand may be their first time "in the field." For researchers in this situation it is easier to use qualitative methods such as grounded theory (Glaser & Strauss, 1967) because there is a "tabula rasa" quality to this initial foray into the "unknown" as a theory from observations is constructed anew. In the case of the therapists-as-qualitative-researchers, clinicians already have made some sort of sense of "the other" by virtue …
Welfare Reform: The Positioning Of Academic Work, Carolyn I. Steele, Cynthia Wallat
Welfare Reform: The Positioning Of Academic Work, Carolyn I. Steele, Cynthia Wallat
The Qualitative Report
Current welfare reform legislation raises a number of questions about how the field of human services will broaden its analytical and educational functions in a context of uncertainty about what welfare will look like in the years to come. How can information and insights about the distribution of welfare dollars and the process of leaving welfare by a heterogeneous population of clients become the basis of contrastive analysis? We describe information sources which can provide a framework for positioning academic work to use longitudinal quantitative tracking sources to lay out qualitative inquiry suggestions for collecting process data that will emerge …

Categorizing, Coding, And Manipulating Qualitative Data Using The Wordperfect® Word Processor, John H. Carney, Joseph F. Joiner, Helen Tragou
The Qualitative Report
In this paper, we present a method of categorizing, coding, and sorting/manipulating qualitative (descriptive) data using the capabilities of a commonly-used word processor: WordPerfect®. We explain the process and its development in simple terms for the person who may be familiar with qualitative research and data, but not with computer and/or word processor manipulation of that data. Although we developed the process to suit our methods, it can easily be adapted/evolved to fit different research situations where a method of rapidly handling large amounts of descriptive data is desirable.
Surviving Ethnography: Coping With Isolation, Violence, And Anger, Jennifer Harris
Surviving Ethnography: Coping With Isolation, Violence, And Anger, Jennifer Harris
The Qualitative Report
This article concentrates upon the intensities of emotion experienced by a novice ethnographer. The argument is that acknowledging the emotional impact of events in the field enables the ethnographer to analyse reflexively the differences between the values of the self and those of the other. Seeing beyond the emotions generated at times of crisis can permit and facilitate an analysis of the everyday social relations between participants. Dealing with the personal impact of these emotions is an entirely different matter; very few others (supervisors, academics, peers) although well-intentioned, will appreciate the depths of these emotions and the problems that they …

Representative Research: A Qualitatively Driven Approach, Mark P. Combs
The Qualitative Report
Research methodologies represent complex sociohistorical evolutions within the social sciences ranging from reductionist to reflexive sensibilities (Tuchman, 1994). These inquiries each emphasize dissimilar variations of data analysis as found in their subsequent conclusions obtained from and during the research process. Unlike quantitative methodology with its explicit formulaic constructions, qualitative research includes a veritable cornucopia of methodologies, paradigms and methods. This paper briefly reviews those experiences encountered and processes which unfolded during a pilot project for a research class. Although Miller and Crabtree (1992) proposed a research roadmap with associated typologies within qualitative research, this paper focuses on the process of …
Semiotics And Qualitative Research In Education: The Third Crossroad, Gary Shank
Semiotics And Qualitative Research In Education: The Third Crossroad, Gary Shank
The Qualitative Report
In this paper, I would like to show how qualitative research in education and semiotics can be brought together for the benefit of each field. Starting with attempts to define both qualitative research and semiotics in ways that can inform both disciplines, I hope to accomplish this task by mapping a series of three crossroads that define the past, present, and hopefully the future of the field.
