This thesis is a mixed-method genre-based study which analyzes the Discussion section of qualitative and quantitative research articles in the field of Applied Linguistics. It is particularly focused on examining the generic structures and stance features of these two sets of articles. The study consists of two main parts. In the first part, 15 qualitative and 15 quantitative RAs’ Discussion sections were analyzed employing Swales’ (1990, 2004) move structure model. In the second part of the study, Hyland’s (1999, 2005, 2008) taxonomy of stance features – hedges, boosters, attitude markers, and self mention – was used to investigate stance features. …

Kajian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis masalah pelajar dalam membina ayat bahasa Arab dari aspek sintaksis, leksikal dan morfologi, membangunkan modul pengajaran pola ayat bahasa Arab dan menilai keberkesanan modul pengajaran tersebut. Model Rekabentuk Pengajaran Dick & Carey (2005) telah dijadikan asas dalam membangunkan modul pengajaran dan Model Analisis Keperluan Brindley (1989) telah diaplikasi dalam menganalisis keperluan pelajar. Muslims read or recite the Qur‘an which is a source of guidance in all aspects of life. However, their recitation is sometimes without comprehension especially to those who do not understand Arabic language. To help reduce this comprehension problem, visualization is proposed based on the theory that the learning process involves the perception and the processing stages. This dissertation aims to explore the human characteristics of anthropomorphic animals found in animal fantasy stories, a sub-genre of children’s literature. Previous linguistic studies in the area of character show that they centre around real humans and weighty plots. Thus, this study attempts to give value to animal anthropomorphism since anthropomorphic animals and humans share common qualities. The present study investigates teachers’ and students’ use of directives and politeness strategies in realising directives in Malaysian ESL classrooms. Using Bach and Harnish’s (1979) classification of directives and Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness strategies as a theoretical framework, audio recordings of three ESL lessons were analysed to examine the types of directives used by teachers and students in Malaysian ESL classrooms and the types of politeness strategies used to realise these directives. In this study, the acquisitional level is obtained based on two categories; the level of thinking while reading Arabic text and the level of comprehension of the reading text.
