This dissertation explores the potential usefulness of priming interaction in fostering students‘ reading engagement. The qualitative case study approach was employed in an ESL reading class at a university, over a …

The Influence Of Chinese Architecture On Traditional Melaka Mosques / Somayeh Armani, Armani Somayeh
Student Works (2010-2019)
Since the sacred architecture manifests a clear reflection of each region's history, culture, and identity, the traditional mosques, as the symbols of Islamic art and architecture, always have intrigued countless architects and scholars worldwide. Although numerous materials have been documented about various mosques’ regional typologies, the Southeast Asian mosque architectural style has been surprisingly neglected. Since the advent of Islam in Southeast Asia during the 13th-15th centuries, innumerable traditional mosques with distinctive architectural form, constructional techniques, and ornamentation, very different from what is known as a mosque in Middle East and Central Asia, were erected in the region. Melaka, as …

Ever since the proposal of the recent African origin of modern humans and its various opposing concepts, evolutionary studies have been focusing on the discovery of timelines for such events based on traceable records in archaic remains and contemporary human populations. Although the migration of anatomically modern humans between the 7 major continents in the near 120,000 years has been explained and fit well in the “out of Africa” hypothesis, human movement within these continents remains elusive. Human demic events in Southeast Asia region have also been the heat of debate among researchers. It has been proposed that this region …

A Case Study Of Stakeholder Perceptions On Communicative Competence In Engineering Technical Oral Presentation / E. Bhattacharyya, E. Bhattacharyya
Student Works (2010-2019)
To date, the notion of communicative competence is deemed “fuzzy” and limited in its operational definition from a linguistic and rhetorical perspective in oral communication literature. An understanding of communicative competence requirements in technical oral presentations stems from the lack of linguistic and rhetorical competency studies required among ESL learners in a Malaysian setting; employer discontent over graduates’ apparent lack of communication skills and limited literature on linguistic and rhetorical features necessary in scientific and engineering oral presentations (Dannels, 2009; Hafizoah Kassim & Kassim Ali 2010; Morton, 2009). The notion becomes more complex when selected stakeholders from various communities of …

This thesis describes the ethnolinguistic vitality of the indigenous Malays of Singapore forty-five years after Singapore’s separation from Malaysia. The study sets out to explore the vitality of the Malay language in Singapore and the factors that influence it. It also seeks to know whether the Malay language has really come to a deficit in Singapore, in terms of language use. The general literature on this subject shows that sociolinguistic researches in Singapore are more focused on socio-psychological framework, especially when dealing with the Malay language-use situation. Such approach lacks the sociological framework that together would provide a holistic look …

Student Works (2010-2019)
According to the schema theory, reading comprehension involves interaction between a text and a reader. This interaction involves the reader’s prior knowledge of the subject on the one hand, and the rhetorical structure of the text on the other hand. Therefore, the current study examines the impact of three independent variables (prior knowledge, rhetorical pattern, and gender) on students’ reading comprehension. In Iran, many high school students have difficulty in comprehending reading texts. Their L2 reading comprehension scores indicate that they are not performing well. Many studies have been done to investigate the influence of some factors on reading comprehension. …

Cooperative Multi Agents For Intelligent Intrusion Detection And Prevention Systems / Shahaboddin Shamshirband, Shahaboddin Shamshirband
Student Works (2010-2019)
Owing to the distributed nature of modern attacks (e.g. denial-of-service), it is extremely challenging to detect such malicious behaviour using traditional intrusion detection systems. In this thesis, we investigate the possibility of adapting an intelligent system to an Intrusion Detection System (IDS) by proposing a cooperative and intelligent detection and prevention system using machine learning approaches, and aim to facilitate the detection and prevention process in a distributed environment. Firstly, we review the state of the art of intelligent intrusion detection and prevention system (IIDPS), and highlight the security requirement of cooperative based-IIDPS. Adaptive optimization techniques such as fuzzy logic …

Social Media Usage For Civic Engagement / Anne Marie Warren, Anne Marie Warren
Student Works (2010-2019)
In the field of Information Systems, much is known about social media as an Information Technology artefact and its influence, offering various understandings of online human behaviour, particularly for business, psychology and sociology implications. Frequently, research on social media usage can be classified into internal (e.g. entertainment and satisfaction) and external factors (e.g. connection benefits). While these studies on motivations generated a clear link between internal and external factors for social media usage, they did not relate clearly the motivations to the contributions made in terms of civic engagement behaviour. Although there have been calls for research in understanding social …
