This dissertation explains the contribution of Abu Yusuf in Islamic Finance based on his Kitab al-Kharaj in which he has been regarded as an outstanding Muslim thinker of Hanafi school of thought. In this work, Abu Yusuf highlighted the position of land taxation (al-kharaj) according to Islamic perspective. ln other words, it tries to view Islamic rulings concerning land tax, its procedures as well as its measurement. The fixing of hearing fees in state Shariah Courts has been provided in a written form as laid down in Rules of Costs and Fees. Practically, in Selangor the determination of hearing cost is stipulated in the Rules of Costs and Fees 1991. This dissertation is aimed at focusing on the details of fees and cost scale as provided in the Rules. This research finds that the cost taxation by Shariah Court judge in Selangor is based on his discretionary power and most of decisions are concerning the attendance fees.

This dissertation studies the debate between "Kaum Tua" ( traditionalist moslem group) and "Kaum Muda" (modernist moslem movement) in Minangkabau, West Sumatera, Indonesia in the early decades of twentieth century. Some Islamic thought problems are discussed, such as tariqah, tawassul and wasilah, rabitah, ijtihad and modernization of Islamic thought. Kaum Tua was known to be very tolerant in practicing their Islamic beliefs and was able to combine it with original Minangkabau's culture and customs which were influenced by some teachings of animism, dynamism and hinduism.
