OBJECTIVE: Thyroid hormones affect gastric acid secretion. As the mechanism of this effect has not been fully known, in this experimental study the isolated gastric acid secretion of hypothyroid and hyperthyroid rats were compared with control group by the administration of different doses of pentagastrin, histamine and carbachol as gastric acid secretion stimulators. METHODS: This study was carried out in Ahwaz University of Medical Sciences, Ahwaz, Iran in the year 2000. Each group were consisted of 8 rats (N-mari) of both sexes with a mean weight of 246 +/- 5 grams. Hypothyroid and hyperthyroid states were induced respectively by adding …

Universal Newborn Hearing Screening, Siraj M. Zakzouk
Universal Newborn Hearing Screening, Siraj M. Zakzouk
Saudi Medical Journal
Hearing loss is an "invisible" handicap. If detection is delayed or denied, significant speech, language, social and emotional delay may result. Delayed identification of hearing loss in children will lead to missing a lot of sound input which can in turn affect their communication, learning, behavior and emotional development as well as future performance in school and work. The world literature on programs for neonatal hearing screening comes mainly from countries such as the United States of America where most births take place in hospitals. Nowadays in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, most births take place in birthing hospitals. It …

Primary Non-Functional Extra-Adrenal Adrenocortical Carcinoma, Kamal E. Bani-Hani
Saudi Medical Journal
We present the case of a 52-year-old Jordanian man who was admitted to hospital due to a left sided abdominal mass that was discovered during a routine physical examination. The huge abdominal tumor was initially suspected to be a retroperitoneal sarcoma based on the ultrasound and computed tomography findings. Cytological analysis of the fine needle aspiration smears was unable to define the origin of this mass, and suggested a sarcoma. During laparotomy, the mass was found not connected to the adrenal gland. Only histopathological and immunohistochemical examination of the surgical specimen allowed the diagnosis of adrenocortical carcinoma. This tumor most …
