Macrophage Activation Syndrome Induced By Staphylococcus Epidermidis In A Pediatric Patient With Cystic Fibrosis And Familial Mediterranean Fever, Sanem Eryilmaz Polat, Salih Uytun, Işıl Bilgiç, Gokcen D. Tuğcu
Saudi Medical Journal
Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis) is the most frequently isolated member of the coagulase-negative staphylococci, which colonizes the skin and mucous membranes of the human body. Despite being a component of the normal flora, S. epidermidis can act as an opportunistic pathogen and is frequently implicated in both bacterial and nosocomial infections. Macrophage activation syndrome (MAS) is a rare but potentially fatal disease that occurs as a result of increased activation and proliferation of T lymphocytes and macrophages in response to infections and immune mediated diseases. It is very rare in patients with cystic fibrosis. Here we report a case of …

Wound Myiasis By Housefly In A Patient With Pemphigus Vulgaris In Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Ohoud Khalid Alsaedi, Munahi Mohammed Alqahtani, Luluah Ali Al-Mubarak
Saudi Medical Journal
Myiasis is the infestation of live vertebrates by dipterous larvae. Cutaneous myiasis is the most common form, although many organs can be infected by these larvae. Cutaneous myiasis is divided into 3 forms: localized furuncular, migratory, and wound myiasis, which have a worldwide distribution, but tropical and subtropical countries have a heavier burden of the disease. Herein, we report a case of scalp wound myiasis in a patient with pemphigus vulgaris caused by Muscidae domestica (M. domestica) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Cases of M. domestica myiasis are limited in the literature. We would like to raise awareness regarding the possibility …

Clostridioides (Clostridium) Difficile: A Silent Nosocomial Pathogen, Ibrahim A. Al-Zahrani
Saudi Medical Journal
Clostridioides difficile (C. difficile) infection is still a threat to many healthcare settings worldwide. Clostridioides difficile epidemiology has changed over the last 20 years, largely due to the emergence of hypervirulent and antimicrobial-resistant C. difficile strains. The excessive use of antimicrobials, the absence of optimal antibiotic policies, and suboptimal infection control practices have fueled the development of this pressing health issue. The prudent use of antimicrobials, particularly broad-spectrum agents, and simple infection control measures, such as hand hygiene, can significantly reduce C. difficile infection rates. Moreover, the early detection of these infections and understanding their epidemiological behavior using accurate laboratory …
