The objective of this study is to investigate the prognostic effect of glutamine. METHODS: For this study, we selected 48 patients from the intensive care unit. Group I consisted of 33 patients whose treatment included glutamine. We placed the remaining 15 patients in group II, and they did not receive glutamine in their treatment. We retrospectively investigated treatment time, leucocyte levels and outcome. …

Epidemiology Of Type I Diabetes Mellitus Among Arab Children, Mohamed A. Abdullah Jun 2005

Epidemiology Of Type I Diabetes Mellitus Among Arab Children, Mohamed A. Abdullah

Saudi Medical Journal

In this article, the epidemiology of type 1 diabetes mellitus among Arab children (<15 years) living in Arab and non-Arab countries is reviewed. These data include the incidence, prevalence and etiopathogenic factors including genetics, environmental factors as well as autoimmune disease markers aside from clinical presentation at onset. The review is based on the information from publications in the international literature identified by searching Medline, other websites as well as personal experience and some communications. The obtained data suggest that the incidence of type 1 diabetes in these countries is increasing similar to the experience in other parts of the world. High incidence has been reported among Arab children who immigrated to some Western countries. The highest incidence is in Qatar and Kuwait and the lowest is in Oman and Jordan. There is considerable variation among countries, which could not be explained on genetic or climatic variations alone. Other environmental factors particularly nutritional ones including high intake of dairy products and vitamin D deficiency are possibly operating. Further, nationwide research from different countries covering the rural as well as urban areas and different ethnic intermixes are needed. To overcome financial and facility problems that hinder research; some cooperation between these countries as well as international bodies are needed.

Urolithiasis In Adults. Clinical And Biochemical Aspects, Rabie E. Abdel-Halim May 2005

Urolithiasis In Adults. Clinical And Biochemical Aspects, Rabie E. Abdel-Halim

Saudi Medical Journal

Urolithiasis is a multifactorial recurrent disease of world-wide distribution in rural, urban, industrial and non-industrial regions. Changes in urinary pH is a risk factor especially with hyperuricosuria, hypercalciuria or hyperoxaluria. With recurrence, hypercalcuria and higher urinary oxalate levels are more frequent. Hypercalciuria and hyperuricosuria showed correlation with family history of stones. The ionic relations between various stone forming salts in urine of patients are opposite to that in controls and are well represented in stone composition. Obesity is a risk factor in both genders. Over eating a diet rich in all nutrients was associated with hyperuricosuria while a diet high …

Osteoporosis In Men, Rafat Faraawi Apr 2005

Osteoporosis In Men, Rafat Faraawi

Saudi Medical Journal

Osteoporosis and fragility fractures are more prevalent in men than previously assumed and mortality rates following a major osteoporotic fracture are higher in men as compared with women. There is still uncertainty on how to interpret bone mineral density BMD in men, and few prospective studies exist that have examined the association between BMD and fracture risk. Prospective studies that have evaluated fracture risk suggest that risk increases as BMD decreases in men in a similar way as described in women. Although data are limited, prior fragility fractures also increase subsequent fracture risks in both men and women. Prevention of …

Gastritis In Saudi Arab Children, Mohammad I. El-Mouzan, Asaad M. Abdullah, Ibrahim A. Al-Mofleh

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: Information on childhood gastritis in developing countries is rare; hence, the objective of this study is to report the pattern of this condition in Saudi Arab children. METHODS: Data analysis were carried out in all children <18 years of age who were referred for endoscopy at King Khalid University Hospital, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from 1993 to 2002. Only children with histology-proven gastritis were included. RESULTS: One hundred and seventy-five patients out of 851, referred for the investigation of gastrointestinal symptoms, had histology-proven gastritis; whereas only 110/851 (13%) had endoscopic features of gastritis. Most of the children (96%) were Saudi nationals, the age ranged between 4 days to 18 years, and the male to female ratio was 0.4:1. The most common presentation of gastritis was abdominal pain in 42%, followed by combination of abdominal pain and vomiting in 20% and vomiting alone in 18% of the children. Rare but important presentations included refractory anemia, melena and halitosis. The prevalence of gastritis increased with age from 9% in children <5 years of age to 42% in adolescents 16-18 years of age. Likewise, the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) gastritis increased from 47% in children <5, to 62% in the 6-15 year age group, and 69% in the 16-18 years old adolescents. Endoscopy was normal in 74/175 (42%) of histologic gastritis and the prevalence of H. pylori gastritis was the highest in cases of endoscopic nodularity (92%) CONCLUSION: Compared to findings from various parts of the world, this report document a similar clinical pattern, but high prevalence of H. pylori gastritis in Saudi Arab children.
