Chief among these are dysphagia, heartburn, and food bolus obstruction in adults whereas children often present with abdominal pain or vomiting. Eosinophilic esophagitis is a chronic condition that if not detected and left untreated could lead to the development of subepithelial fibrosis and esophageal stenosis. The diagnosis of EoE is confirmed in a patient presenting with characteristic EoE symptoms, classic signs on endoscopy, and biopsy results showing >15 eosinophils/hpf. Regarding prevalence, bronchiolitis, acute bronchitis, and respiratory infections are other leading pediatric respiratory illnesses. Compared to the aforementioned diseases, pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome (PARDS) is rare but lethal in the Intensive Care Unit patients. According to global studies, the mortality in PARDS ranges from 13.3% to 60.7%. Before the Pediatric Acute Lung Injury Consensus Conference (PALICC), adult acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) management guidelines were used for PARDS. Cellular Resistance Mechanisms In Cancer And The New Approaches To Overcome Resistance Mechanisms Chemotherapy, Ali A. Rabaan Apr 2023

Cellular Resistance Mechanisms In Cancer And The New Approaches To Overcome Resistance Mechanisms Chemotherapy, Ali A. Rabaan

Saudi Medical Journal

Despite major advancements in cancer healing approaches over the last few decades, chemotherapy remains the most popular malignancy treatment. Chemotherapeutic drugs are classified into many kinds based on their mechanism of action. Multidrug resistance (MDR) is responsible for approximately 90% of fatalities in malignancy cases treated with standard chemotherapeutics or innovative targeted medicines. Many innovative prospective anti-cancer medicines displayed high anti-cancer efficacy in a single application. However, combining them with other medications improves cancer treatment efficacy. This supports the belief that a combination of drugs is significantly more effective than a single medicine. Due to the intricacy of MDR processes …

Results: The overall median s-25(OH)D was 53.3 nmol/L, VD deficiency (<30 nmol/L), deficiency (30-50 nmol/L), sufficient (>50-250 nmol/L) and excess (>250 nmol/L) were 16% (796/4982), 30% (1495/4982), 53.4% (2658/4982) and 0.7% (33/4982). There were statistically significant differences in median s-25(OH)D by month, age-groups and gender ( p <0.001). Low VD status (LVDS, including VD deficiency and insufficiency) in females was 54.6% and males was 33.9%, and the LVDS composition differed significantly by age-group and month ( p <0.05). The changing trend of the median s-25(OH)D level was similar to the monthly average sunshine hours, with a slight lag. Conclusion: Nearly half of residents live in LVDS. LVDS is affected by month, gender, and age.

Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells And Wound Healing: Potential Clinical Applications In Wound Repair, Sami G. Almalki Oct 2022

Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells And Wound Healing: Potential Clinical Applications In Wound Repair, Sami G. Almalki

Saudi Medical Journal

Delayed and chronic wounds result from the dysregulation of molecular and cellular events associated with wound healing, including migration, inflammation, angiogenesis, extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling, and re-epithelialization. Adipose tissue is an abundant, easily accessible, and rich source of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) with high therapeutic potential. In addition to their capability to differentiate into various lineages with specialized functions, adipose-derived MSCs (AMSCs) can mediate to the wound repair process through the secretion of different growth factors and mediators rather than making structural contribution alone. Adipose-derived MSCs mediate the formation of blood vessels, recruit progenitor cells, stimulate cell differentiation and ECM …

Saudi Medical Journal

Objectives: To investigate the prevalence of preterm birth (PTB) and the risk factors for different gestational age subgroups of preterm birth in China. Methods: We carried out a descriptive cross-sectional study encompassing all singleton live births (24 +0 to 41 +6 weeks) with completed data in 23 provinces in China from 2010 to 2017 during investigation period. We compared both the preterm group (24 +0 to 36 +6 weeks) and preterm subgroups (<32 weeks, 32 +0 to 33 +6 weeks, and 34 +0 t0 36 +6 weeks) with the term group (37 +0 to 41 +6 weeks). We collected information on maternal and fetal characteristics from medical records. Logistic regression was use. Results: The prevalence of PTB was 7.4% (15,833/215,254) in singleton births. After adjusting for maternal age, parity, and potential risk factors in univariate analysis, the high-risk factors for PTB at <32 weeks were placental abruption (aOR=41.52; 95% CI, 25.89–66.58), placenta previa (aOR=40.04; 95% CI, 32.00–50.09), chorioamnionitis (aOR=11.06; 95% CI, 8.738–14.02), and hypertension disorders in pregnancy (HDP) (aOR=3.564; 95% CI, 2.930–4.335). Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) was significantly associated with PTB at 34–36 weeks (aOR=5.763; 95% CI, 5.049–6.577), particularly with spontaneous PTB (aOR=10.04; 95% CI, 8.79–11.47). Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) was significantly associated with PTB at 34–36 weeks only (aOR=1.156; 95% CI, 1.054–1.267). Conclusion: Placental abruption, placenta previa, chorioamnionitis, and HDP were more predictive of early PTB; GDM and ICP were more predictive of late PTB.
