The prevalence of type-2 diabetes mellitus is high in many developing communities, including many Arabic communities. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence, severity and pattern of caries in preschool children of Al-Ahsa, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. METHODS: Three hundred and twenty two randomly selected pre-school children were examined in kindergartens of Al-Ahsa, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for dental caries using World Health Organization criteria for the diagnosis of caries. The study was completed in 2000. We report an unusual child with sickle cell disease, in which osteomyelitis of the sternum and clavicle was diagnosed at the same time. The standard x-ray failed to demonstrate the lesion. Magnetic resonance imaging was very helpful in locating the site and degree of involvement. We recommend the use of magnetic resonance imaging to delineate such findings.

Infant mortality rate based on registered deaths was 6/1000 live births, while estimates of this rate based on indirect methods varied between 29-70/1000 live births. METHODS: The efficacy of 6 disinfectants used at King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, on prosthetic and surface-covering materials, irreversible hydrocolloid and elastomer impression materials, wax, acrylic resin, metal, bench-covering material, and floor carpet. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate urinary iodine excretion during the course of pregnancy and postpartum in relation to maternal and neonatal thyroid function parameters in Saudi women living in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A prospective longitudinal study was conducted on Saudi normal pregnant women during the course of pregnancy (N=80), at term and 6-10 weeks postpartum (N=65), during the period January 1997 through to December 2000. The aim of this study was to review our experience with juvenile polyposis syndrome with emphasis on the diversity of polyp pathology and distribution and the recommended treatment. METHODS: Over the period January 1994 through February 2001, 10 family members were managed at Princess Basma Teaching Hospital, Irbid, Jordan. OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinicopathological features of patients admitted to adult wards with a primary presenting feature of lymphadenopathy. METHODS: A retrospective study of all patients admitted to Riyadh Medical Complex, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia between April 1996 through to March 2000. RESULTS: The patients mean age was 35.2 years (standard deviation 15.7 years) and 59.5% were females while 56.2% were Saudis. Swelling was the primary presenting symptom in 39.3% of the patients, while fever, night sweats, and pain occurred in 17.3%, 10.3% and 8.5% patients. OBJECTIVE: To determine the epidemiological status of the cutaneous leishmaniasis outbreak, isolation and identification of the parasite and preparation of a control program in a recently identified focus located in the Province of Yazd, Central Iran. METHODS: This study was conducted in 124 classrooms of primary school children and among 139 households of an infected quarter in the city of Yazd during 1999-2000.
