Universal Newborn Hearing Screening, Siraj M. Zakzouk
Universal Newborn Hearing Screening, Siraj M. Zakzouk
Saudi Medical Journal
Hearing loss is an "invisible" handicap. If detection is delayed or denied, significant speech, language, social and emotional delay may result. Delayed identification of hearing loss in children will lead to missing a lot of sound input which can in turn affect their communication, learning, behavior and emotional development as well as future performance in school and work. The world literature on programs for neonatal hearing screening comes mainly from countries such as the United States of America where most births take place in hospitals. Nowadays in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, most births take place in birthing hospitals. It …

OBJECTIVE: To study the prevalence of refractive errors and certain eye diseases in children in southern Jordan. METHODS: In the period between May 2001 and April 2002, 1725 patients (6-14 years of age) visiting the Pediatric Clinics in Prince Ali Hospital, Jordan for non ophthalmologic complaints were tested by a pediatrician for their visual acuity (VA) using a Snellen9s E-chart. Patients with suspected eye abnormalities and those with VA of <6/12 were referred for further detailed eye examination. RESULTS: Twelve patients had bilateral VA of <6/12, and an additional 5 patients had unilateral VA of <6/12. Strabismus was seen in 9 patients (0.5%), and amblyopia in 5 patients (0.3%). Vernal keratoconjunctivitis was seen in 26 patients (1.5%). CONCLUSION: It is important to conduct a large study, perhaps a multicenter study to evaluate the eye diseases in developing countries.

Improving Resource Utilization In The Intensive Care Units. A Challenge For Saudi Hospitals, Yaseen Arabi, Abdullah Al-Shimemeri
Improving Resource Utilization In The Intensive Care Units. A Challenge For Saudi Hospitals, Yaseen Arabi, Abdullah Al-Shimemeri
Saudi Medical Journal
In the face of increasing demand of intensive care services in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, as well as the high cost of delivering such services, systematic steps must be undertaken in order to ensure optional utilization and fair allocation of resources. Strategies start prior to intensive care units (ICU) admission by the proper selection of patients who are likely to benefit from ICU. Less resource-demanding alternatives, such as intermediate care units, should be used for low-risk patients. Do-not-resuscitate status in patients with no meaningful chance of recovery will prevent futile admissions to ICUs. Measures known to improve the efficiency …

Production of genome sequence has recently skyrocketed with many advances in the understanding and etiology of certain diseases. Researchers have localized a region of the human genome that plays a role in determining a persons susceptibility to myocardial infarction. A new apolipoprotein gene that influences triglyceride levels in humans is also described. A recent study from Finland showed that certain families are likely to carry a genetic form of insulin resistance syndrome that predisposes them to accelerated atherosclerosis. Researchers identified 3 mutations in the gene producing a protein called metavinculin, which appears to be linked to abnormalities in cellular structures …
