The Role Of Vitamin E In The Prevention Of Coronary Events And Stroke. Meta-Analysis Of Randomized Controlled Trials, Abdullah H. Alkhenizan, Mohammed A. Al-Omran

Cardiovascular disease CVD is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the world. Vitamin E as an anti-oxidant vitamin, was suggested to have a role in the prevention of CVD. We did a meta-analysis, using the Cochrane Group Methodology, of all available randomized controlled trials RCTs to evaluate the role of vitamin E in the prevention of CVD. Nine studies met inclusion criteria, including 80,645 participants. Vitamin E supplementation was not associated with a reduction in total mortality or total CVD mortality, but it was associated with a small statistically significant reduction in non-fatal myocardial infarction in patients with …

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this preliminary study is to investigate the effects of exogenous Endothelin-1 (ET-1) on systolic blood pressure and heart rate as well as on plasma nitric oxide metabolites, malondialdehyde, copper and zinc concentrations and red cell superoxide dismutase and catalase activities. METHODS: Thirty Wistar-Albino male rats, 8-10 weeks old, with a mean body weight of 285 gm were used in the study. Daily systolic blood pressures were measured by tail plethysmography. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of smoking and alcohol on serum, saliva, and urine total sialic acid (TSA) levels, and on serum gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) enzyme activities. METHODS: Serum, urine and saliva samples obtained from smokers, drinkers, and nonsmokers-nondrinkers (control) subjects. The aim of this study is to investigate whether Ramadan fasting can affect these metabolic parameters in non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) patients. OBJECTIVE: A pharmacoepidemiological study of prescription pattern in outpatient clinics in Southwestern Saudi Arabia METHODS: A total of 3796 prescriptions from outpatient clinics of Aseer Central Hospital, Abha, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia were screened randomly and systemically over one-year period (April 2000 to April 2001). The prescriptions were analyzed for the essential elements of the prescription order, and for the number and classes of drugs prescribed, source of prescription and appropriateness of prescription to the diagnosis. OBJECTIVE: To study the risk factors and clinical outcome in patients having extended-spectrum beta-lactamase producing (ESBL) Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) hospital acquired bacteremia. METHODS: The study was conducted at 500 bedded King Fahad Hospital and Tertiary Care Center, Al-Hofuf, Al-Hasa, Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical and radiographic characteristics of achalasia in a cohort Jordanian patients and to investigate the presence of any clinico-radiological relationships. METHODS: Thirty-five cases of recently diagnosed untreated achalasia patients were studied at Jordan University Hospital, Amman, Jordan during the period of January 1999 to December 2002. OBJECTIVE: To study the long-term outcome after liver transplantation (LT) in Egyptian patients who underwent LT outside Egypt. METHODS: Between May 1993 and February 2004, over 150 Egyptians underwent LT outside Egypt. Data of 67 recipients were collected in Egypt through personal communications with the Overseas Liver Transplant Centers and through the records of the Egyptian Liver Transplant Association. RESULTS: Most patients underwent LT in Europe (73.1%), few in the United State of America (17.9%) and in Japan (9%). OBJECTIVE: To study the outcomes of pregnancies complicated with preterm premature rupture of the membranes (PPROM) between 26-36 week gestation. METHODS: A retrospective study of 36670 pregnancies registered and managed in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, King Khalid University Hospital, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) from March 1993 to February 2003. RESULTS: Two hundred and twenty cases of PPROM (0.6%) were registered and treated expectantly out of 36670 total pregnancies registered during the study period. The incidence of perinatal death resulting from rhesus Rh isoimmunization has dropped dramatically since the introduction of Rh immunoglobulin. However, Rh sensitization continues to be one of the leading causes of fetal anemia. Our patient is a 38-year-old woman; she gives a history of 2 uneventful pregnancies followed by 5 consecutive stillbirths. Investigations revealed an anti-D titre of 1/2048 and anti-C titre of 1/256. Ultrasound examination revealed fetal ascites at 18 weeks gestation. The fetus had a total of 9 successful intrauterine transfusions. Traumatic subconjunctival crystalline lens is a rare phenomena; we report a case of ocular trauma by the tail of a cow. A 60-year-old female presented with history of trauma to her left eye by the tail of a cow, she had severe headache, redness and pain in her left eye. She was admitted and the crystalline lens was found in the subconjunctival space and was removed surgically.
