Synergistic Effect Of The Combination Triclosan With 2-Phenylphenol Against Pseudomonas Aeruginosa And Fungi, Haitham N. Tumah
Synergistic Effect Of The Combination Triclosan With 2-Phenylphenol Against Pseudomonas Aeruginosa And Fungi, Haitham N. Tumah
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: Triclosan is active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria but lesser against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P.aeruginosa). 2-phenylphenol is considered as an effective agent against fungi but its antifungal action is more important than its antibacterial activity. The aim of this study is to evaluate the bactericidal and fungicidal activities of triclosan and 2-phenylphenol alone, and in combination against standard strains of bacteria and fungi. METHODS: The study was carried out in the Research Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Microbiology, Faculty of Pharmacy, Jordan University of Science and Technology, Irbid, Jordan, during the year 2004. The standard French method of in-vitro dilution quantitative suspension …

Expression Of Nm23 Antimetastatic Gene Product In Parathyroid Hyperplasia, Adenoma And Carcinoma. An Immunohistological Assessment, Jaudah A. Al-Maghrabi, Sylvia L. Asa
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: The nm23 gene was initially cloned as a metastasis suppressor gene, but the clinical relevance of nm23 as a metastasis suppressor or prognostic indicator for human cancers remain controversial. To evaluate the role of nm23 protein as a prognostic factor and its role in parathyroid neoplasia, we studied nm23 protein expression by immunohistochemical staining in parathyroid lesions. METHODS: Immunohistochemistry using the avidin-biotin peroxidase complex technique with a polyclonal antibody against the nm23 protein was applied to formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue specimens obtained from 48 patients. The specimens were collected from 38 patients at the University Health Network, Toronto, Canada and …

OBJECTIVE: In diagnostic microbiology laboratories, Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is identified by positive coagulase test and positive deoxyribonuclease (DNase) activity followed by demonstration of oxacillin resistance on susceptibility testing on agar plate. This usually takes an approximately 48-72 hours. The purpose of this study is to evaluate 2 real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays for the presence of mecA gene in a population of MRSA strains circulating in Jeddah, Western Saudi Arabia, in order to determine their usefulness in the speedy diagnosis of MRSA in our clinical setting and their contribution to optimal patient management. METHODS: Ninety MRSA isolates …

Urolithiasis In Adults. Clinical And Biochemical Aspects, Rabie E. Abdel-Halim
Urolithiasis In Adults. Clinical And Biochemical Aspects, Rabie E. Abdel-Halim
Saudi Medical Journal
Urolithiasis is a multifactorial recurrent disease of world-wide distribution in rural, urban, industrial and non-industrial regions. Changes in urinary pH is a risk factor especially with hyperuricosuria, hypercalciuria or hyperoxaluria. With recurrence, hypercalcuria and higher urinary oxalate levels are more frequent. Hypercalciuria and hyperuricosuria showed correlation with family history of stones. The ionic relations between various stone forming salts in urine of patients are opposite to that in controls and are well represented in stone composition. Obesity is a risk factor in both genders. Over eating a diet rich in all nutrients was associated with hyperuricosuria while a diet high …

An Evaluation Of The Variation In The Rates Of Occupational Accidents In Turkey With Trend Analysis Methodology. Are Occupational Accidents Really Diminishing?, Ali N. Yildiz, Nazmi Bilir, Omer U. Erzengin
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: To show whether the rate of occupational accidents is decreasing in Turkey. METHODS: Data on incidence and deaths due to occupational accidents in Turkey during the period 1970-2000 were obtained and evaluated at the Department of Public Health, Hacettepe University, Ankara, Turkey. The data were collected in January 2003. The occupational accident rates were analyzed by morbidity, mortality and case fatality rates. The change in each variable over years was tested by trend analysis methodology. A regression analysis was performed on data on 3-point moving averages. RESULTS: The morbidity decreases significantly over the last 30 years (p<0.01) with a slope of -0.003. The correlation of the morbidity tendency due to years was 0.995 (p<0.01) and the total variance descriptive rate was 0.991. In respect to mortality, the variation due to years was declining (0.00001, p<0.01). The correlation of the model was 0.950 (p<0.01) and brings out the total variance to 0.903. The trend analysis model can be explained meaningfully in respect of constant and slope (p<0.01). In respect of fatality the variance over the years was 0.00029 (p<0.01). The correlation of the model was 0.934 (p<0.01) and brings out the total variance of 0.872. CONCLUSION: The main reason of the decrease of occupational accidents was probably due to unreported accidents, which do not cause injury. Reasons for underreporting of minor accidents should be investigated and this point should be taken into consideration when planning an occupational accident prevention programs.

We report a full term female newborn infant, born to a multipara unbooked mother who had VZV subclinical infection during the first trimester of pregnancy. Routine newborn examination showed cystic malformation of the left eye, and absence of the right eye globe. Radiological work up revealed severe brain and eye malformations, serological studies of both mother and baby were positive for VZV. The baby underwent palliative surgery to the eyes, upon discharge, a plan of multidisciplinary team was made for …
