This study aims to describe the clinical, microbiological characteristics and outcome of BSI in pediatric patients. METHODS: We collected the clinical data from all pediatric patients with positive blood cultures. We identified all isolates from these patients from January 2004 to December 2004 at King Khalid University Hospital (KKUH), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and determined antimicrobial susceptibilities by MicroScan Walk Away 96 (Dade Behring Inc., West Sacramento, CA95691, USA). RESULTS: Two hundred and twenty pediatric patients had BSI, of whom 147 (67%) were males and …

OBJECTIVE: To study the prevalence of isolated minor congenital anomalies in a regional hospital in Oman. METHODS: We determined the prevalence of isolated minor congenital anomalies in 21988 births during a 10-year period from January 1993 through December 2002 by using data from the hospital-based congenital anomaly register at Nizwa Hospital, Oman. RESULTS: The total prevalence of congenital anomalies was 37 per 1000 births and that of minor anomalies 12.4 per 1000 births. Hypospadias, talipes deformity and polydactyly were the most common minor anomalies. A nurse or the house resident detected most of the minor anomalies soon after birth during …

Acute Small Bowel Obstruction Due To Bilharziasis, Rahman Gul, Kamran Khalid, Mohammad F. Al-Rajhi, Hayan A. Bismar
Saudi Medical Journal
Schistosomiasis remains a major world health problem. The disease presents with protean manifestations in the endemic areas. Small bowel schistosomiasis leading to acute intestinal obstruction is an extremely rare clinical presentation. The disease may mimic peritoneal tuberculosis or carcinomatosis intra-operatively. Small bowel bilharziasis leading to obstruction has not been reported in the recent indexed English literature. This report describes a 50-year-old Yemeni male presenting with acute small bowel obstruction due to schistosomiasis. We review the pathological changes in the intestine following schistosomal infection and discuss diagnosis and treatment. We emphasize the importance of histopathology on all surgical specimens.

Hypothermia In Iranian Newborns. Incidence, Risk Factors And Related Complications, Farid Zayeri, Anoshirvan Kazemnejad, Mojtaba Ganjali, Gholamreza Babaei, Navid Khanafshar, Fatemeh Nayeri
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence rate and factors associated with hypothermia in Iranian newborns and to discover the effect of hypothermia on neonatal morbidity and mortality. METHODS: We selected a random sample of 1952 neonates using a multistage sampling technique from February 2004 to February 2005 in University Teaching Hospitals in Iran. We measured repeatedly at different time points the rectal temperature of these newborns. At each time of measurement, those with rectal temperature <36OC were considered as hypothermic. RESULTS: The obtained results showed that approximately one third of newborns became hypothermic immediately after birth. In addition, the regression analysis revealed that low birth weights, prematures, low apgar scores, infants of multiple pregnancies and those who received cardiopulmonary resuscitation had higher risk for being hypothermic. It was also found that hypothermia increases the risk of metabolic acidosis, jaundice, respiratory distress, hypoglycemia, pulmonary hemorrhage and death, regardless of the newborn9s weight and gestational age. CONCLUSION: There is an urgent need to train mothers and all levels of neonatal care staff to control this health problem in our country.

METHODS: We carried out the study in the University Clinic Center, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, from February 2002 to January 2004. Six New Zealand rabbits underwent hemiresection of the mandible. We placed rhBMP-7 in a concentration of 100 micrograms and collagen (ACS) as carrier mixed with bone marrow in the defects in 3 animals. In another group of 3, we restored the defect by placement of autologous bone graft harvested from the iliac crest. …

Association Between Lamellar Body Count And Respiratory Distress In Neonates, Shohreh Bahasadri, Nasrin Changizi
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: Assessment of fetal lung maturity by a simple and rapid test has a pivotal role in obstetric managements. Lack of modern laboratory techniques in our country made us investigate whether lamellar body count (LBC) can be applied efficiently in the evaluation of fetal lung maturity. METHODS: Lamellar body count was assessed in 104 unspun amniotic fluid samples taken from pregnant women admitted at Akbar Abadi Hospital, Tehran, Iran between May 2003 and November 2003 whose fetuses were at risk for respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). Cut-off points for LBC were determined to evaluate the risk of RDS. Standard clinical and …
