OBJECTIVE: To determine the negative appendectomy rate; utilization, accuracy of Alvarado scale, ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT) in diagnosis of acute appendicitis. METHODS: Hospital records of 124 female patients admitted for suspicious of acute appendicitis from January 2003 - January 2004 to the Emergency Department (ED) at King Abdul-Aziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia were reviewed retrospectively. Emergency General Surgical Admissions. Prospective Institutional Experience In Non-Traumatic Acute Abdomen: Implications For Education, Training And Service, Abdulmohsen A. Al-Mulhim

OBJECTIVE: To assess the pattern of non-traumatic acute abdomen (NTAA) in emergency general surgical admissions in Saudi Arabia (SA) and highlight the implications for education, training and patient care. METHODS: A prospective study including all emergency general surgical admissions with NTAA at King Fahd Hospital of the University, Al-Khobar, SA over a 2-year period from October 2001 to September 2003. RESULTS: There were 3,706 general surgical admissions; 1,661 (45%) electives and 2,045 (55%) emergencies. A total of 1,096 admissions (mean age 27.6 years, 73% males) with NTAA were analyzed. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of venous diseases at different anatomical localizations on the qualities of life of patients with varicose veins. METHODS: The study included 354 cases, which was referred to a private vascular and interventional radiology center in Bursa, Turkey between January 2005 to January 2006. OBJECTIVE: To explore the association between conventional risk factors and urinary leakage among a random sample of adult Turkish women. METHODS: Six hundred and fifty patients (mean age 33.2 ± 10.6 years; range 17-65 years) attending 6 Primary Health Care Centers in the Eastern Marmara Region, Turkey were randomly enrolled in this study, between September 2005 and December 2005. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the changes of serum malondialdehyde (MDA) level for the oxidative stress hypothesis in patients with cystic echinococcosis (CE). METHODS: The study was conducted on patients with CE before the surgical treatment. Anti-Echinococcus granulosus antibodies were determined by serological method. We assayed MDA activities measured of 57 subjects and matched in 45 healthy controls. OBJECTIVE: To determine the immunity status of children with Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) lymphadenitis (patient group) and unaffected children (control group) in Iran. METHODS: We performed this longitudinal case-control study on 75 children between 2 months to 14 years old in Rasool Akram and Markaz Tebbi Hospital, Tehran, Iran during the period of 2 years (2000-2002). RESULTS: Ninety percent of patients had normal immunoglobulin, 10% had low level, 96.1% had normal nitro blue tetrazolium test and 3.9% had lower activity. A 62-year-old woman presented with symptoms of dyspnea. Ultrasonography and computed tomography examinations revealed mass extending from the cricoid cartilage to the left lobe of thyroid gland and thyroid cartilage. Cytology revealed possibility of cartilaginous origin, which was proven to be chondrosarcoma Grade 1 from the biopsy specimen obtained during panendoscopy. She underwent one stage radical resection and immediate reconstruction of laryngeal skeleton defect by mucocartilaginous graft from the nasal septum. Her postoperative course was optimal with preservation of all the laryngeal functions. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the distribution of microbiologic agents causing cervicovaginitis. METHODS: We conducted the study between October 2002 and December 2004 in Abant Izzet Baysal University, Duzce School of Medicine Hospital, Turkey. The samples were obtained from the posterior vaginal fornix and cervix by swabs in 828 patients. Direct microscopic examination, culture and enzyme immune assay (EIA) methods were performed in all patients for diagnosis of microbiologic agents. OBJECTIVE: To determine the seroprevalence of antibodies to hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis A virus (HAV) among children in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and to evaluate the need of anti-HAV mass vaccination. METHODS: This study was carried out on random samples of schools located at different regions in Jeddah, KSA during the year 2004. Hospital admissions with heart failure (HF) are increasing worldwide. It is the main reason for hospitalization of elderly patients. Heart failure affects nearly 15% of patients aged >75 years. Prognosis after diagnosis of HF is comparable to that of cancers with 50% survival after 4 years of mild HF and 50% after one year in more severe cases. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the frequency of abnormal cervical smears and to compare the findings with earlier reported data from Saudi Arabia. METHODS: The study was divided into 2 parts.
