OBJECTIVE: To isolate and construct cloning and expression vectors containing human papillomavirus (HPV16-L1) gene as target for application as recombinant vaccine. METHODS: The study was performed in 2007 in Tarbiat Modares University, Tehran, Iran. Four genital specimens DNAs were amplified with the use of HPV type-specific primers based on HPV-16 L1, E6, and E7 genes. The polymerase chain reaction products were cloned into suitable cloning and expression vectors and were confirmed by restriction enzyme analysis and sequencing. RESULTS: The desired plasmids were sequenced and indicated 99% homology with those submitted full length L1 sequences in the GenBank. CONCLUSION: The results …

Recent Advances In The Management Of Hypertension, Mansour M. Al-Nozha, Mohamed Z. Khalil
Saudi Medical Journal
Hypertension is a worldwide prevalent disease that leads to considerable morbidity and mortality. While its underlying basis of genetics and pathology as well as its complications are universally agreed upon, management of hypertension remains to be controversial. In this article, we will present clear evidence of the recent advances in the management of hypertension that include newer therapeutic agents replacing old strategies. Moreover, a suggested approach that is evidence based is provided to help in establishing agreement in line of therapy.

Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the spectrum of probable vascular complications due to short-term oral contraceptives OC consumption. METHODS: In this cohort study, selected Iranian female pilgrims from Razavi-Khorasan, Iran province <50 years old, attending Hajj in 2005 were evaluated. We reviewed their physical examinations, vascular risk factors and OC consumption before Hajj. Pilgrims were followed-up in terms of developing possible vascular complications during Hajj and the following year. RESULTS: This study included 896 individuals and completed follow-up was performed for 642. The showed that 782 (87.3%) of pilgrims used OC. One person developed cerebral vein thrombosis, one myocardial infarction, and one deep vein thrombosis. Eighteen patients (2.8%) experienced transient hypertension. Ten patients (1.5%) had migraine exacerbations. The relationship between developed definite vascular complications and OC consumption was not statistically significant in this study p=0.365. CONCLUSIONS: Although vascular complications of long-term OC consumption have been analyzed and proved in several studies, few studies have determined short-term OC consumption effects on the vascular system. It seems that even short-term usage of OC may result in vascular complications, thus further studies with more samples is recommended to determine its safety and complications.
