Advanced Tissue Characterization In Non-Ischemic Cardiomyopathies Using Contrast-Enhanced Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Abdullah M. Shehab, Oliver Strohm

Saudi Medical Journal

Cardio-vascular magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) can be used to obtain integrated information on both cardiac function and on advanced tissue characteristics. Using contrast-enhanced techniques, highly diagnostic information on tissue viability, inflammatory changes, and on storage diseases can be obtained within a 45-minute examination. The combination of functional information (using steady-state free precession sequences cine techniques), assessment of myocardial edema (using T2-based techniques), of reversible injury (for example in inflammatory diseases; using T1-based techniques), and irreversible injury (for example in infarction and regional fibrosis, using late gadolinium enhancement techniques) allows disease-specific and prognostic information to be obtained in patients with non-ischemic …

Unusual Association Between Adrenal Leiomyoma And Autoimmune Disease., Anwar A. Al-Masri, Tariq N. Aladily, Nidal A. Younes

Saudi Medical Journal

Adrenal leiomyoma is a rare solid tumor of unknown etiology. Here, we present a case of a 38-year-old woman, a known case of Hashimoto9s thyroiditis, presented with right adrenal mass incidentally discovered by computed tomography imaging. The mass was non-functioning according to laboratory results, but because the mass increased in size in a follow up visit, she underwent right adrenalectomy. The histological findings confirmed the diagnosis of adrenal leiomyoma, which was supported by a panel of immunohistochemical stains. Surprisingly, there was a dense lymphocytic infiltrate in the background of the tumor, forming germinal centers. Although most of the reported adrenal …

Tuberculosis Vaccine, Mohammed A. Sarhan

Saudi Medical Journal

Tuberculosis (TB) is still one of the leading causes of death from a single infectious agent, killing 1.6 million people each year, mostly in developing countries. The existing vaccines, Bacille Calmette and Guerin (BCG), are efficient in preventing the most severe disseminated forms of disease in children and newborns, but its efficacy against active TB in adults has been challenged by several clinical studies. It is a common opinion that only the development of a new and more effective vaccine against TB would significantly ease the deadly disease. In recent years, looking for a new vaccine or an improved TB …
