Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Food security(FS) refers to having sufficient physical, social, and economic food access at all times. People living in rural, regional, and remote (RRR) locations often face distinctive challenges to FS. Existing solutions, that aim to enhance FS, themselves face challenges when addressing these issues. This paper outlines the application of an adapted Systemic Innovation Lab (SIL) approach to enhance the function of existing community and government-led, -run or -operated initiatives (programs, interventions) in RRR Western Australia. It examines which systems change characteristics participating initiatives possess, to identify opportunities to support their transition to newer and more effective ways of addressing …

Live High-Train Low Induced Changes In Hemoglobin Mass And The Erythropoietin-Erythroferrone-Hepcidin Axis In Female Endurance Athletes, Titta Kuorelahti, Johanna K. Ihalainen, Vesa Linnamo, Claire Badenhorst, Oona Kettunen, Ritva Mikkonen

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The effects of a 21-day live high-train low (LHTL) on hemoglobin mass (Hbmass) and iron demand including the erythropoietin (EPO)-erythroferrone (ERFE)-hepcidin axis and routine iron markers were investigated. Fifteen female endurance athletes completed either 21-day LHTL in normobaric hypoxia (2500 m, ~18 h·day−1) (INT, n = 8) or lived and trained in normoxia (CON, n = 7). Hbmass and resting blood were collected before and after the intervention. An additional blood sample was collected on Day 6 for INT. 21-day LHTL increased Hbmass 3.8% in INT (p < 0.001). EPO increased 35.6% from Day 0 to Day 6 in INT (p = 0.037) and then decreased 42.4% from Day 6 to Day 21 (p = 0.019). In INT, no changes were detected in ERFE or hepcidin, and from the routine iron markers only serum transferrin receptor increased from Day 0 to Day 21 (13.9%, p = 0.013). In CON, no changes were detected in Hbmass or iron markers. In INT, Hbmass and ferritin were positively associated (Day 0 to Day 6, p = 0.005). Thus, hepcidin and ERFE may not provide additional information regarding iron demand following 6- or 21-day LHTL compared to routine iron markers. The relationship between Hbmass and ferritin indicates that adequate ferritin levels are needed during hypoxia to support hematological adaptations.

The Influence Of The Marker Set On Inverse Kinematics Results To Inform Markerless Motion Capture Annotations, Marion Mundt, David Pagnon, Steffi Colyer

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Markerless motion capture has the potential to enable biomechanical analyses without specialised, high-cost equipment. However, the comparability of many markerless motion capture frameworks with the most used marker-based method is limited. One reason for this is the lack of high-quality, biomechanically-informed datasets that are needed to train markerless models. This study aimed to inform the development of such a dataset by systematically analysing the agreement between a gold-standard marker set and a reduced number of markers to solve inverse kinematics (IK). We analysed the impact of different marker positions on the IK solution using an OpenSim lower body model with …

Lipocalin-2 (LCN2) has three main variants; polyaminated (hLCN2) and non-polyaminated (C87A and R81E). The polyaminated form is proposed to positively influence energy control, whereas the non-polyaminated forms negatively impact energy control in mice. Glucocorticoids negatively affect glucose regulation and exercise has a positive effect. We hypothesise that glucocorticoids will suppress, while exercise will increase hLCN2, and decrease C87A and R81E, which will be associated with improved insulin sensitivity. In a randomised crossover design, nine young healthy men (aged 27.8 ± 4.9 years; BMI 24.4 ± 2.4 kg/m2) completed 30 min of high-intensity aerobic exercise (90–95% heart rate reserve) after glucocorticoid …

Exercise has emerged as an effective therapeutic strategy in cancer management. Long-term supervised exercise programs, including resistance training and aerobic training, can improve body composition and physical fitness, modulate circulating factors (e.g., hormones, cytokines), enhance treatment tolerance, and reduce side effects, potentially influencing cancer progression and reducing mortality risk. Despite advancements in exercise oncology, opportunities remain to refine exercise prescription through the integration of advanced methodologies such as periodization and autoregulatory programming strategies. Periodization, a systematic approach to organizing training over time, has demonstrated benefits in general fitness and clinical populations but is underexplored in cancer care. Emerging evidence suggests …

Postinactivity Exercise Training Improves Sarcopenia Traits In 40–60-Year-Old Women Regardless Of Fortified Milk Supplementation, Joanne Trezise, Ricardo M. Lima, Sally D. Poppitt, Aaron C. Fanning, Amanda Devine, Anthony J. Blazevich

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Background: The term sarcopenia was introduced to describe the age-related decline in muscle mass, but current definitions also include measures of muscle strength and function. Menopause increases sarcopenia risk and may exacerbate the adverse effects of physical inactivity. Exercise training is a potent stimulus to restore muscle health, and nutritional supplementation can further improve the outcomes. The purposes of this study were to examine the changes in a set of sarcopenia-related phenotypes induced by a 14-day step-reduction period followed by a 12-week exercise training programme, with or without fortified milk supplementation in healthy 40–60-year-old females, and to determine whether menopausal …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Background: Upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) are prevalent public health issues worldwide. Their prevention is challenging, and they pose a significant economic burden due to their susceptibility to secondary infections and lack of effective treatments. This study investigates the relationship between URTIs and the holistic diets and lifestyles of residents in Northeast China. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from 4058 participants aged 12 to 70 who participated in the Internet-based dietary questionnaire for Chinese (IDQC), collected between 2012 and 2019. Statistical analyses were performed with SPSS 20.0 software, employing chi-square tests for categorical data and Kruskal-Wallis tests …

Background: Corticospinal excitability, measured by motor-evoked potentials (MEPs), is often impaired in neurological and musculoskeletal conditions. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can modulate cortical excitability and improve clinical outcomes, yet inconsistencies in parameter settings complicate identification of optimal protocols. Objective: Our primary objective was to examine the effects of: (i) stimulation polarity, (ii) duration, (iii) intensity, (iv) frequency, (v) electrode montage, and (vi) electrode design (size/shape) on MEP size. Methods: Nine databases were searched from inception to 24th November 2023. We identified 84 individual cohorts (1,709 participants) and assessed time-dependent effects of each parameter on M1 MEP-to-baseline ratio in healthy …
