Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Australian Aboriginal children have higher sugar intake and are disproportionately affected by sugar-related diseases such as obesity, diabetes and dental caries than non-Aboriginal children. The intention of this paper was to highlight the need for approaches that can capture the complexity of health practices without reducing them to either individual choice or structural determination. We explore sugar consumption in Aboriginal children from a social practice perspective. Here, the unit of analysis is the practice, not the individual, where the elements of a social practice (competence, materials and meanings) are integrated into its performance. We conducted qualitative research using elements of …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Public food procurement stands as one of the most powerful, yet chronically underutilised, policy levers available to Australian governments. Every day, publicly funded institutions – hospitals, residential aged care facilities, long day care, prisons, schools, defence facilities and community food programs – purchase and serve food to millions of Australians. These are not simply transactions. Collectively, these purchasing decisions shape production systems, supply chains, diets, livelihoods and environmental outcomes. They determine who thrives within our food system and who is left behind. Transforming the Public Plate is an Australian first. It provides the most comprehensive national picture to date of …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Hypertension is a leading contributor to global morbidity and mortality, arising from the interplay of genetic and environmental risk factors together with the dysregulation of multiple physiological systems involved in blood pressure control. Recent advances have established the gut as a central regulator, implicating the intestinal microbiota and barrier integrity in the modulation of blood pressure. Alterations in the gut microbial consortium, along with changes in levels of metabolites produced by the microbiota, have been associated with blood pressure regulation in animal models and human studies. Key microbial metabolites, including short-chain fatty acids, trimethylamine-N-oxide, and bile acids influence endothelial function, …

Integrated Chitosan-Based Coagulation And Microbubble Pre-Treatment For Improved Microplastic Fibre Removal From Water, Nimesha Thathsarani, Mohadeseh Najafi, Mehdi Khiadani, Muhammad Rizwan Azhar, Masoumeh Zargar

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Microplastic fibres (MPFs) dominate treatment plant influents but are difficult to remove due to their morphology, composition and low density, limiting the effectiveness of coagulation flocculation pre-treatment. Integrating coagulation-flocculation with microbubble introduction offers a sustainable route to improve MPF removal, yet conventional inorganic coagulants often require high dosages, show strong pH dependence, and pose environmental risks. Chitosan is a biodegradable and non-toxic green alternative, but its application is limited due to its low solubility and pH sensitivity. In this study, two amphoteric derivatives of Chitosan have been successfully developed: CMC-CTA, produced by modifying carboxymethyl Chitosan (CMC) with 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium …

In 2021, less than half of Australian universities considered Indigenous perspectives in curriculum development, with only 15% ensuring Indigenous content in all courses. Literature acknowledges that a strengths-based approach to the inclusion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge and perspectives, enhances representation and decolonises curriculum. In 2020, Noongar elder Vivienne Hansen, and John Horsfall created Noongar Bush Medicine, detailing the medicinal use of Indigenous plants. Yeshi, Turpin, Jamtsho, and Wangchuk noted that many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities use native plants for health purposes. However, there is limited data on the therapeutic efficacy of these plants. In 2024, …

Background: South and Southeast Asia face severe malnutrition in children under five, with coexisting forms of malnutrition (CFM) exacerbating mortality risks and posing greater challenges than isolated forms of malnutrition. We aimed to assess the prevalence, trends, and factors of CFM among children aged 6–59 months in South and Southeast Asian countries and the entire region. Methods: We used anthropometric and hemoglobin data from 515,170 children aged 6–59 months in seven low- and middle-income South and Southeast Asian countries, based on Demographic and Health Surveys conducted between 1996 and 2022. Weighted multivariable logistic regression was performed to identify the sociodemographic …
