Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Purpose: Prolonged sitting and physical inactivity are key risk factors for trunk-muscle weakness, impaired balance, and low-back pain in overweight women. Although unstable-surface training is widely prescribed, head-to-head comparisons between TRX suspension and Swiss-ball exercise are limited. We compared these modalities for effects on core-muscle endurance and balance.
Methods: Thirty overweight, inactive women (30 ± 5 years; BMI 27.3 ± 1.6 kg·m⁻2) were block-randomized (1:1) to 8 weeks (3 sessions/week) of TRX or Swiss-ball training using five matched exercises at Borg RPE 13–15 on the 6–20 scale. Outcomes were trunk-extensor (Biering-Sørensen), trunk-flexor (60° curl-up), and trunk-lateral (side-bridge) endurance; static balance …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Objectives: Individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D) remain at high cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. The pan-immune-inflammation value (PIV) integrates circulating neutrophils, monocytes, platelets, and lymphocytes but does not capture albumin-related nutritional and inflammatory reserve. We investigated associations between the PIV-to-albumin ratio (PIVA) and incident CVD, cardiovascular mortality, and disease progression in individuals with T2D.
Methods: This prospective study included 15,355 UK Biobank participants with T2D and no baseline CVD. PIVA was calculated from peripheral blood cell counts and serum albumin and was natural log-transformed. Fine–Gray competing-risk and cause-specific Cox models were used to evaluate incident CVD and cardiovascular mortality. Multi-state …

Physical And Rheological Properties Of Bitumen Modified With Biochar, Nuha S. Mashaan, Suneth Sirinatha, Chathurika Dassanayake
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The integration of biochar into asphalt binders represents a significant advancement toward global sustainability in pavement engineering. Produced through biomass pyrolysis, biochar enables the valorization of agricultural and industrial waste while reducing dependence on petroleum-derived binder constituents. This review critically synthesizes current research regarding the impact of biochar on the physical, rheological, and aging performance of bitumen. The evidence consistently shows that biochar improves binder stiffness, raises softening points, and strengthens rutting resistance at elevated temperatures, largely due to its porous microstructure and high carbon content. Biochar-modified binders also exhibit enhanced aging resistance through the adsorption of volatile light fractions. …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Prehospital emergency care requires clinicians to manage a vast array of medical and trauma incidents, including rare events such as obstetrics (i.e., childbirth) emergencies. Emergency births can have life-threatening complications such as neonatal respiratory distress potentially leading to cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Management of low-frequency high-risk (LFHR) events such as birthing and immediate neonatal care occurring outside the planned place of birth require expert clinical management. Underutilised skill and knowledge of LFHR events decay within 12-months of being taught. LFHR events are often overlooked for refresher training due to the low occurrence of such cases, putting LFHR patients at even greater risk …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
On any given day millions of travellers find themselves contending with weather that deviates dramatically from prior expectations. Traditionally regarded as an unwelcome disruption, adverse weather has rarely been examined for its potential to enrich, rather than diminish, the value of tourist experiences. Consequently, this research critically explores how tourists positively reappraise adverse weather disruptions in tourism experiences. Based on eight focus groups (n = 42), transcript data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis within a social-constructivist paradigm, combining iterative coding with abductive reasoning. Findings demonstrate that adverse weather can function as a situational catalyst that enables tourists to reinterpret …

A Novel Mesoscopic Modelling Approach For Steel Fibre-Reinforced Concrete: Investigating The Effects Of Fibre Alignment On Flexural Performance, Ayman Mansour, Themelina Paraskeva, Nuha S. Mashaan
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Traditional finite element modelling of Steel Fibre-Reinforced Concrete (SFRC) relies on homogenised macroscopic models that overlook localised effects such as fibre orientation. Although three-dimensional (3D) mesoscopic frameworks for SFRC have been developed, direct comparisons with homogenised macroscopic models under the EN 14651 flexural test configuration remain limited, particularly for variations in fibre orientations. Consequently, a comparative evaluation is essential to assess the mesoscopic model under EN 14651 conditions. To address this, this work introduces a 3D tensor-controlled mesoscopic modelling approach for SFRC that explicitly simulates individual fibres with random and preferential alignment, offering a more realistic representation of fibre bridging …
Adjusting To Extreme Demand Volatility: A Comparative Analysis Of Air Navigation Service Provider Financial Resilience In The Southern Asia-Pacific, Margaret Arblaster, Gui Lohmann
Adjusting To Extreme Demand Volatility: A Comparative Analysis Of Air Navigation Service Provider Financial Resilience In The Southern Asia-Pacific, Margaret Arblaster, Gui Lohmann
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Air navigation service providers fund their operations almost entirely through activity-based user charges, creating a structural dependency between revenue and air traffic volume. When traffic collapses, revenue falls immediately, but the cost base, dominated by specialised labour under fixed-term employment contracts and long-lived capital infrastructure, adjusts slowly, if at all. This paper examines how five corporatised, wholly government-owned air navigation service providers in the southern Asia-Pacific (i.e., Airservices Australia, Airways New Zealand, AirNav Indonesia, NiuSky Pacific in Papua New Guinea, and Fiji Airports) responded to the extreme demand shock of the COVID-19 pandemic and assesses the role of government grants …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
There is conflicting evidence about the pathways Street Level Bureaucrats’ (SLBs’) use to engage Innovative Work Behavior (IWB). This study uses Street Level Bureaucrat (SLB) and Conservation of Resources (COR) to examine the extent to which SLBs’ work engagement and/or burnout mediates the relationship between Psychosocial Safety Climate (PSC) and teamwork, and IWB. The methods comprised a sample of 259 healthcare SLBs (doctors, nurses, allied health) collected at two times, and analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results show that the variance of PSC and teamwork explained a third of engagement, and engagement-burnout mediated the impact of PSC and teamwork …
Learning, Play, And The Shifting Expectations Of Childhood: Insights From Young Children In Australian Schools, Amelia Ruscoe
Learning, Play, And The Shifting Expectations Of Childhood: Insights From Young Children In Australian Schools, Amelia Ruscoe
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The experience of childhood is not static. It is subject to changing social, cultural, and economic demands. In 2009, the Australian Government heeded the advice of internationally acclaimed economists and ‘reconceptualised’ childhood as a critical period for investment to secure a stronger economic future. In response, a revised school-based childhood emerged, echoing neoliberal ideology through a national curriculum that heightened focus on the “well-being” and “well-becoming” of young children. Alteration to the expectations of school-based childhood in Australia beckons researchers to examine the undiluted perspectives of young children. Using a qualitative approach, visual-dialogic methodology supported by children’s drawn and embodied …

Metabolomics In Renal Cystic Disease: Links To Mechanisms And Identification Of Pathways For Potential Prediagnosis, Liyan Chen, David Broadhurst, Armaghan Shafaei, Jacqueline K. Phillips, Shijie Tang, Hayley Abbiss
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a common hereditary kidney disorder with an insidious onset and complex mechanisms, making early diagnosis challenging. Current diagnostic methods, including imaging and genetic testing, have limitations. Imaging detects cysts only once formed, and genetic testing is costly, labor-intensive, and unable to guarantee complete diagnostic accuracy or predict onset and progression. Metabolomics may offer an approach to uncover PKD mechanisms by detecting metabolic alterations that precede clinical manifestations, enabling identification of disease-specific biomarkers, and providing earlier and more practical detection than imaging or genetic testing. This review synthesizes existing metabolomics studies of human PKD and renal …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Curiosity increasingly attracts attention in tourism research. However, the field remains conceptually fragmented around what curiosity is and how it works, often pointing to related yet different understandings of the concept. Drawing on an in-depth analysis of 61 peer-reviewed articles, we aim to build a more coherent agenda for future research by answering two core questions: how has curiosity been conceptualised and studied in tourism research, and what gaps and directions emerge from the literature? The analysis reveals that curiosity has been studied in four primary ways in tourism research: an innate motivational driver, a situational mediating state, an outcome …

Comparing User Experiences Of Teleportation, Slide-Walk, And Walk-In-Place Locomotion Across Two Virtual Reality Games, Shane L. Rogers, Brett Ryder, Stephen Palmisano
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Virtual reality (VR) locomotion methods differ substantially in their implications for usability, presence, and comfort. Although previous research has compared a range of locomotion techniques, relatively little attention has been given to whether locomotion experiences generalise across different VR experiences. The present study compared user experiences of three locomotion methods (teleportation, slide-walk, and walk-in-place) across two VR applications (Nature Treks VR, an exploration-focused environment, and Ancient Dungeon VR, an action-oriented game). Sixty-three participants were recruited, with analyses based on the forty-five participants who completed all study conditions. During each 10-min condition (comprising a 2-min familiarisation period followed by an 8-min …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background: Road injuries are a leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Years of international efforts have aimed to strengthen policy engagement, including the 2020 UN General Assembly's proclamation of the Second Decade of Action for Road Safety (2021–30), targeting a 50% reduction in road traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2030. The aim of this study is to provide estimates to monitor progress and identify intervention gaps.
Methods: As part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2023, we estimated incidence, mortality, and morbidity of road injuries for 204 countries and territories from 1990 to …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Older adults represent a growing proportion of healthcare consumers, and yet little is known about the osteopathic practitioners who regularly manage this population. This study set out to understand what characteristics are common among New Zealand osteopaths who regularly treat older adults. This cross-sectional, exploratory study was a secondary analysis of questionnaire data collected through a practice-based research network. The questionnaire captured osteopaths’ demographic characteristics, practice settings, and clinical management approaches. Of the 277 osteopaths who completed the questionnaire, 188 (67.9%) reported frequently treating older adults. Those most likely to do so were based in urban areas, treated wrist and …
