Purpose: To examine the feasibility and exploratory immunological, metabolic, and patient-reported effects of a supervised exercise intervention during (neo)adjuvant chemotherapy in women with early-stage breast cancer.
Methods: This non-randomised pilot study examined a 12-week supervised combined aerobic and resistance exercise programme during (neo)adjuvant treatment. Participants self-selected into the exercise intervention, and as no eligible participants opted for the control group, a convenience control group was subsequently recruited for blood biomarker comparisons. Sessions were performed 2–3 times per week—with exercise individually tailored according to treatment-related side effects and by progressively adjusting intensity to maintain a target rating of perceived exertion (RPE) …

Values are important building blocks of political ideologies and are frequently invoked in political debates. Yet, because values are abstract, understanding how they are expressed in real-world discourse, and how this varies across contexts, remains a challenge. In this paper, we introduce a large-scale, expert-annotated dataset of value expression in political text, comprising news articles and political manifestos across nine languages. The dataset is grounded in the refined theory of human values (Schwartz et al., 2012) and was developed through an iterative process of annotation guideline development, annotator training, and expert curation. Value annotations capture both the type of value …

Ph-Responsive Mixed-Charge Ultrafiltration Membranes For Adaptive Control Of Single And Mixed Nanoplastic Fouling, Mohadeseh Najafi, Javad Farahbakhsh, Roham Ghanbari, Ebrahim Mahmoudi, Michael Johns, Masoumeh Zargar
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Nanoplastic (NP) fouling is an emerging barrier to the reliable application of ultrafiltration (UF) membranes, particularly in chemically complex waters where NP surface functionality governs deposition, cake formation, and cleaning performance. Herein, pH-responsive mixed-charge UF membranes were fabricated by plasma-induced graft copolymerisation of mono-2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl succinate (MMES) and N-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl] methacrylamide (DMAPMA) onto poly(ethersulfone) (PES) to simultaneously regulate surface charge, hydration, and fouling reversibility. Unlike conventional single-charge or zwitterionic modifications, this approach enabled independent tuning of anionic and cationic moieties, generating composition-dependent and pH-switchable interfacial properties. ATR-FTIR, XPS, FESEM/EDX, AFM, WCA, streaming zeta potential, and MWCO analyses confirmed successful grafting, modified …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Spatial variation in the magnitude and pace of climate change impacts means some species will be more affected than others. This includes those occurring within global biodiversity hotspots, regions with exceptional concentrations of endemic species that have often been shaped by long-term climatic stability. Disproportionate levels of human-induced pressure in these areas are threatening much of the biodiversity values that make these biodiversity hotspots exceptional. Southwest Western Australia is a highly fragmented temperate biodiversity hotspot experiencing rapid climate change and supporting many species of threatened mammals. One Critically Endangered arboreal folivore, the western ringtail possum (ngwayir; Pseudocheirus occidentalis), has contracted …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Natural hydrogen has emerged as a promising clean energy resource with significant potential for large-scale subsurface production. Among the various geological sources, water–rock interactions involving iron-bearing rocks are among the most extensively studied pathways for natural hydrogen generation. This study provides a comprehensive review of hydrogen production from iron-rich lithologies, including mafic and ultramafic rocks, iron oxides, iron carbonates, and peralkaline granites. The fundamental mechanism involves the reduction of water coupled with the oxidation of ferrous iron to ferric iron under anoxic conditions. Key processes, including serpentinization, magnetite alteration, and siderite decomposition, are critically evaluated using experimental and modelling data. …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Among different solar water heaters, heat pipe-based solar water heaters foster potential solutions to alleviate water scarcity. However, a lower outlet temperature at the outlet section of their header pipe reveals low system efficiency due to limited heat transfer between the flowing fluid and the heat pipe condenser walls. The main aim of this study is to investigate a model manifold header pipe having five condenser sections with a dimple pattern to replicate internal features of heat pipe condensers within an evacuated tube solar collector, and its significance is to provide a comprehensive understanding of flow and thermal behaviour in …

Structural Attributes Of Dominant Seagrass Species Modulate Invertebrate Assemblages Within The Shark Bay World Heritage Area, Inês Leal, Daniel Gorman, Lauren Mukheibir, Keisha Desmond, Simone Strydom
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The structural complexity of seagrass meadows plays a central role in shaping the diversity and composition of associated invertebrate assemblages. In the Shark Bay World Heritage Area of Western Australia, the dominant species Amphibolis antarctica and Posidonia australis differ markedly in their above- and below-ground morphology, yet the invertebrate assemblages they support remain poorly characterised. This study provides the first contemporary assessment of these habitat–invertebrate relationships, a timely contribution given the region’s increasing exposure to frequent and extreme climatic events. We identified 13,124 invertebrates from 7 phyla, 16 classes and 55 orders/families and highlight marked differences between epifaunal assemblage structure …

Experimental Investigation Of Internal Flow Structures And Permeate Flux Behaviour In Direct Contact Membrane Distillation, Ali Kandi, Mehdi Khiadani, Yujie Yuan, Abdellah Shafieian
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Understanding internal hydrodynamics of Direct Contact Membrane Distillation (DCMD) is crucial for desalination performance and mitigating temperature polarization. Despite its importance, quantitative experimental characterization of hydrodynamics governing boundary-layer development and transport enhancement within DCMD channels remains limited. This study presents the first spatially resolved Particle Image Velocimetry PIV measurement of velocity fields inside a smooth, actively operating flat-sheet DCMD channel, linking observed hydrodynamic structures to permeate flux. Two-dimensional velocity fields were captured at different streamwise positions for feed flow rates ranging from 0.7 to 4 L·min−1, enabling analysis of flow evolution and turbulence characteristics relevant to mass transfer. The results …

Protocol For Integrating Vessel Networks And Environmental Matching To Inform Cost-Effective Archipelago Biosecurity Planning And Management, Chi T.U. Le, Chad L. Hewitt, Marnie L. Campbell
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Inter-island vessel networks support economic activity but also enable secondary spread of non-native species. By integrating vessel-movement data, network analysis, and environmental matching, we present a protocol for generating a cost-effective biosecurity decision-support tool by assessing both the relative economic importance and the relative risks of species spread within a vessel traffic system. We outline steps for data curation, network construction, and sea surface temperature-based environmental similarity calculation. We then detail procedures for the translation of outputs into management recommendations. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Campbell et al. 1

Kanmultisign: Multi-Scale Sequence-Based Pose Animation From Sign Language Notation With Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks, Guanyi Du, Lintao Wang, Kun Hu, Ziyang Wang
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Sign language production from symbolic notation offers a scalable route to accessible sign animation. We present KANMultiSign, a multi-scale sequence generator that translates HamNoSys notation into two-dimensional human pose sequences. Our framework makes two complementary contributions. First, we introduce a coarse-to-fine generation strategy with multi-scale supervision: the model is first guided by an intermediate body–hand–face scaffold to encourage global structural coherence, and then refines fine-grained hand articulation to improve finger-level detail. Second, we investigate integrating Kolmogorov–Arnold Network modules into a Transformer backbone, using learnable univariate function primitives to model the highly non-linear mapping from discrete phonological symbols to continuous body …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Natural magnetite in Banded Iron Formations (BIFs) is attracting interest as a hydrothermal H2-generating medium and a potential caprock for subsurface hydrogen storage because of its low permeability. However, its wettability under reservoir conditions remains poorly understood. In this study, the wettability of natural and organically aged magnetite was evaluated using the tilted plate contact angle method at 1–100 bar and 25–65 °C with deionized water and 5 and 10 wt% NaCl brines as droplet fluids. The results showed that magnetite remained water-wet throughout the tested conditions. Higher pressure shifted the system toward less water-wet behaviour, whereas increasing temperature enhanced …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
High-quality algebra teaching can be significantly influenced by algebra-specific knowledge, but broad teacher mathematical knowledge frameworks may not fully capture the nuances of this knowledge. The present study examined these nuances in the case of preservice secondary mathematics teachers (PMTs) by employing the Knowledge of Algebra for Teaching (KAT) framework. The study analysed the solutions and explanations of fifteen PMTs from a metropolitan university in Australia to three worded problems involving simultaneous equations. The findings revealed strengths in PMTs’ proficiency with basic algebraic problem-solving procedures and their ability to recognise the efficiency of algebraic approaches for solving simultaneous equations. Limitations …

The impact of maternal physical activity on infant body composition remains understudied. This study aimed to investigate the association between maternal activity levels during pregnancy and infant body fat percentage, utilising data from the Western Australian ORIGINS birth cohort. A total of 323 pregnant women and their male (148) and female (175) infants born during 2016-2024 were included in the analysis. Maternal physical activity was measured with the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and the Godin Leisure-Time Exercise (Godin) questionnaire during the second trimester. Infant body composition was measured within 7 d of birth using infant air displacement plethysmography (PEA …

Importance: Intimate partner violence (IPV) against women is a persistent global public health concern with lasting impacts on the health of affected women and their children. Although previous studies suggest a potential link between IPV and mortality among children younger than 5 years (under-5 mortality [U5M]), the evidence remains inconclusive.
Objective: To examine whether different forms of IPV are associated with under-5, infant, and neonatal mortality.
Data Sources: Seven databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, Global Health, PsycINFO, Scopus, Web of Science, and CINAHL) were searched from database inception to April 22, 2026.
Study Selection: Studies were included if they examined the association …

Background: Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder in school-aged children and has been associated with impaired brain iron homeostasis. Evidence has shown that psychostimulant treatment may affect brain iron content in children with ADHD, however, longitudinal evidence remains limited. The present longitudinal study investigated the effect of psychostimulant treatment duration and age at treatment onset on brain iron content in children with ADHD. Methods: Neuroimaging and phenotypical data were collected from the publicly available Oregon ADHD-1000 dataset. After screening, data from 29 psychostimulant-medicated children with ADHD and 38 neurotypical children were included. Individual General Estimating Equation (GEE) …

Thermal management devices aim to remove extra heat from heat generation devices. There are numerous ways of heat rejection from the source, including active and passive cooling. The cooling techniques may be natural or forced, and the popular tools are heat pipes, heat sinks, and heat exchangers. In this piece of literature, several heat pipe and heat sink configurations are tested, including a novel internally cooled configuration using mono and hybrid nanofluids. Among heat sinks, solid finned and hollow finned configurations are mainly compared with the state-of-the-art heat pipes and thermal management systems for broader comparisons. Solid cylindrical fins are …
