A Survey On Complex Knowledge Base Question Answering: Methods, Challenges And Solutions, Yunshi Lan, Gaole He, Jinhao Jiang, Jing Jiang, Wayne Xin Zhao, Ji-Rong Wen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Knowledge base question answering (KBQA) aims to answer a question over a knowledge base (KB). Recently, a large number of studies focus on semantically or syntactically complicated questions. In this paper, we elaborately summarize the typical challenges and solutions for complex KBQA. We begin with introducing the background about the KBQA task. Next, we present the two mainstream categories of methods for complex KBQA, namely semantic parsing-based (SP-based) methods and information retrieval-based (IR-based) methods. We then review the advanced methods comprehensively from the perspective of the two categories. Specifically, we explicate their solutions to the typical challenges. Finally, we conclude …

In many public health settings, it is important for patients to adhere to health programs, such as taking medications and periodic health checks. Unfortunately, beneficiaries may gradually disengage from such programs, which is detrimental to their health. A concrete example of gradual disengagement has been observed by an organization that carries out a free automated call-based program for spreading preventive care information among pregnant women. Many women stop picking up calls after being enrolled for a few months. To avoid such disengagements, it is important to provide timely interventions. Such interventions are often expensive and can be provided to only …

Node-Wise Localization Of Graph Neural Networks, Zemin Liu, Yuan Fang, Chenghao Liu, Steven C.H. Hoi Aug 2021

Node-Wise Localization Of Graph Neural Networks, Zemin Liu, Yuan Fang, Chenghao Liu, Steven C.H. Hoi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Graph neural networks (GNNs) emerge as a powerful family of representation learning models on graphs. To derive node representations, they utilize a global model that recursively aggregates information from the neighboring nodes. However, different nodes reside at different parts of the graph in different local contexts, making their distributions vary across the graph. Ideally, how a node receives its neighborhood information should be a function of its local context, to diverge from the global GNN model shared by all nodes. To utilize node locality without overfitting, we propose a node-wise localization of GNNs by accounting for both global and local …

Integrating Knowledge Compilation With Reinforcement Learning For Routes, Jiajing Ling, Kushagra Chandak, Akshat Kumar Aug 2021

Integrating Knowledge Compilation With Reinforcement Learning For Routes, Jiajing Ling, Kushagra Chandak, Akshat Kumar

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Sequential multiagent decision-making under partial observability and uncertainty poses several challenges. Although multiagent reinforcement learning (MARL) approaches have increased the scalability, addressing combinatorial domains is still challenging as random exploration by agents is unlikely to generate useful reward signals. We address cooperative multiagent pathfinding under uncertainty and partial observability where agents move from their respective sources to destinations while also satisfying constraints (e.g., visiting landmarks). Our main contributions include: (1) compiling domain knowledge such as underlying graph connectivity and domain constraints into propositional logic based decision diagrams, (2) developing modular techniques to integrate such knowledge with deep MARL algorithms, and …

Data Pricing And Data Asset Governance In The Ai Era, Jian Pei, Feida Zhu, Zicun Cong, Luo Xuan, Liu Huiwen, Xin Mu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Data is one of the most critical resources in the AI Era. While substantial research has been dedicated to training machine learning models using various types of data, much less efforts have been invested in the exploration of assessing and governing data assets in end-to-end processes of machine learning and data science, that is, the pipeline where data is collected and processed, and then machine learning models are produced, requested, deployed, shared and evolved. To provide a state-of-the-art overall picture of this important and novel area and advocate the related research and development, we present a tutorial addressing two essential …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Stack Overflow is one of the most popular technical Q&A sites used by software developers. Seeking help from Stack Overflow has become an essential part of software developers' daily work for solving programming-related questions. Although the Stack Overflow community has provided quality assurance guidelines to help users write better questions, we observed that a significant number of questions submitted to Stack Overflow are of low quality. In this paper, we introduce a new web-based tool, Code2Que, which can help developers in writing higher quality questions for a given code snippet. Code2Que consists of two main stages: offline learning and online …

Are Missing Links Predictable? An Inferential Benchmark For Knowledge Graph Completion, Yixin Cao, Xiang Ji, Xin Lv, Juanzi Li, Yonggang Wen, Hanwang Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present InferWiki, a Knowledge Graph Completion (KGC) dataset that improves upon existing benchmarks in inferential ability, assumptions, and patterns. First, each testing sample is predictable with supportive data in the training set. To ensure it, we propose to utilize rule-guided train/test generation, instead of conventional random split. Second, InferWiki initiates the evaluation following the open-world assumption and improves the inferential difficulty of the closed-world assumption, by providing manually annotated negative and unknown triples. Third, we include various inference patterns (e.g., reasoning path length and types) for comprehensive evaluation. In experiments, we curate two settings of InferWiki varying in sizes …

Learning From Miscellaneous Other-Class Words For Few-Shot Named Entity Recognition, Meihan Tong, Shuai Wang, Bin Xu, Yixin Cao, Minghui Liu, Lei Hou, Juanzi Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Few-shot Named Entity Recognition (NER) exploits only a handful of annotations to identify and classify named entity mentions. Prototypical network shows superior performance on few-shot NER. However, existing prototypical methods fail to differentiate rich semantics in other-class words, which will aggravate overfitting under few shot scenario. To address the issue, we propose a novel model, Mining Undefined Classes from Other-class (MUCO), that can automatically induce different undefined classes from the other class to improve few-shot NER. With these extra-labeled undefined classes, our method will improve the discriminative ability of NER classifier and enhance the understanding of predefined classes with stand-by …

How Knowledge Graph And Attention Help? A Qualitative Analysis Into Bag-Level Relation Extraction, Zikun Hu, Yixin Cao, Lifu Huang, Tat-Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Knowledge Graph (KG) and attention mechanism have been demonstrated effective in introducing and selecting useful information for weakly supervised methods. However, only qualitative analysis and ablation study are provided as evidence. In this paper, we contribute a dataset and propose a paradigm to quantitatively evaluate the effect of attention and KG on bag-level relation extraction (RE). We find that (1) higher attention accuracy may lead to worse performance as it may harm the model’s ability to extract entity mention features; (2) the performance of attention is largely influenced by various noise distribution patterns, which is closely related to real-world datasets; …

Outsourcing Service Fair Payment Based On Blockchain And Its Applications In Cloud Computing, Yinghui Zhang, Robert H. Deng, Ximeng Liu, Dong Zheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As a milestone in the development of outsourcing services, cloud computing enables an increasing number of individuals and enterprises to enjoy the most advanced services from outsourcing service providers. Because online payment and data security issues are involved in outsourcing services, the mutual distrust between users and service providers may severely impede the wide adoption of cloud computing. Nevertheless, most existing solutions only consider a specific type of services and rely on a trusted third-party to realize fair payment. In this paper, to realize secure and fair payment of outsourcing services in general without relying on any third-party, trusted or …

Integrating Empirical Analysis Into Analytical Framework: An Integrated Model Structure For On-Demand Transportation, Yuliu Su, Ying Xu, Costas Courcoubetis, Shih-Fen Cheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

On-demand transportation services have been developing in an irresistible trend since their first launch in public. These services not only transform the urban mobility landscape, but also profoundly change individuals’ travel behavior. In this paper, we propose an integrated model structure which integrates empirical analysis into a discrete choice based analytical framework to investigate a heterogeneous population’s choices on ownership, usage and transportation mode with the presence of ride-hailing. Distinguished from traditional discrete choice models where individuals’ choices are only affected by exogenous variables and are independent of other individuals’ choices, our model extends to capture the endogeneity of supply …

Automated Taxi Queue Management At High-Demand Venues, Mengyu Ji, Shih-Fen Cheng Aug 2021

Automated Taxi Queue Management At High-Demand Venues, Mengyu Ji, Shih-Fen Cheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we seek to identify an effective management policy that could reduce supply-demand gaps at taxi queues serving high-density locations where demand surges frequently happen. Unlike current industry practice, which relies on broadcasting to attract taxis to come and serve the queue, we propose more proactive and adaptive approaches to handle demand surges. Our design objective is to reduce the cumulative supply-demand gaps as much as we could by sending notifications to individual taxis. To address this problem, we first propose a highly effective passenger demand prediction system that is based on the real-time flight arrival information. By …

Type And Interval Aware Array Constraint Solving For Symbolic Execution, Ziqi Shuai, Zhenbang Chen, Yufeng Zhang, Jun Sun, Ji Wang Aug 2021

Type And Interval Aware Array Constraint Solving For Symbolic Execution, Ziqi Shuai, Zhenbang Chen, Yufeng Zhang, Jun Sun, Ji Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Array constraints are prevalent in analyzing a program with symbolic execution. Solving array constraints is challenging due to the complexity of the precise encoding for arrays. In this work, we propose to synergize symbolic execution and array constraint solving. Our method addresses the difficulties in solving array constraints with novel ideas. First, we propose a lightweight method for pre-checking the unsatisfiability of array constraints based on integer linear programming. Second, observing that encoding arrays at the byte-level introduces many redundant axioms that reduce the effectiveness of constraint solving, we propose type and interval aware axiom generation. Note that the type …

Solving Large-Scale Extensive-Form Network Security Games Via Neural Fictitious Self-Play, Wanqi Xue, Youzhi Zhang, Shuxin Li, Xinrun Wang, Bo An, Chai Kiat Yeo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Securing networked infrastructures is important in the real world. The problem of deploying security resources to protect against an attacker in networked domains can be modeled as Network Security Games (NSGs). Unfortunately, existing approaches, including the deep learning-based approaches, are inefficient to solve large-scale extensive-form NSGs. In this paper, we propose a novel learning paradigm, NSG-NFSP, to solve large-scale extensive-form NSGs based on Neural Fictitious Self-Play (NFSP). Our main contributions include: i) reforming the best response (BR) policy network in NFSP to be a mapping from action-state pair to action-value, to make the calculation of BR possible in NSGs; ii) …

Neural Regret-Matching For Distributed Constraint Optimization Problems, Yanchen Deng, Runshen Yu, Xinrun Wang, Bo An Aug 2021

Neural Regret-Matching For Distributed Constraint Optimization Problems, Yanchen Deng, Runshen Yu, Xinrun Wang, Bo An

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Distributed constraint optimization problems (DCOPs) are a powerful model for multi-agent coordination and optimization, where information and controls are distributed among multiple agents by nature. Sampling-based algorithms are important incomplete techniques for solving medium-scale DCOPs. However, they use tables to exactly store all the information (e.g., costs, confidence bounds) to facilitate sampling, which limits their scalability. This paper tackles the limitation by incorporating deep neural networks in solving DCOPs for the first time and presents a neural-based sampling scheme built upon regret-matching. In the algorithm, each agent trains a neural network to approximate the regret related to its local problem …

Step-Wise Deep Learning Models For Solving Routing Problems, Liang Xin, Wen Song, Zhiguang Cao, Jie Zhang Jul 2021

Step-Wise Deep Learning Models For Solving Routing Problems, Liang Xin, Wen Song, Zhiguang Cao, Jie Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Routing problems are very important in intelligent transportation systems. Recently, a number of deep learning-based methods are proposed to automatically learn construction heuristics for solving routing problems. However, these methods do not completely follow Bellman's Principle of Optimality since the visited nodes during construction are still included in the following subtasks, resulting in suboptimal policies. In this article, we propose a novel step-wise scheme which explicitly removes the visited nodes in each node selection step. We apply this scheme to two representative deep models for routing problems, pointer network and transformer attention model (TAM), and significantly improve the performance of …

Vibransee: Enabling Simultaneous Visible Light Communication And Sensing, Ila Nitin Gokarn, Archan Misra Jul 2021

Vibransee: Enabling Simultaneous Visible Light Communication And Sensing, Ila Nitin Gokarn, Archan Misra

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Driven by the ubiquitous proliferation of low-cost LED luminaires, visible light communication (VLC) has been established as a high-speed communications technology based on the high-frequency modulation of an optical source. In parallel, Visible Light Sensing (VLS) has recently demonstrated how vision-based at-a-distance sensing of mechanical vibrations (e.g., of factory equipment) can be performed using high frequency optical strobing. However, to date, exemplars of VLC and VLS have been explored in isolation, without consideration of their mutual dependencies. In this work, we explore whether and how high-throughput VLC and high-coverage VLS can be simultaneously supported. We first demonstrate the existence of …

Stealing Deep Reinforcement Learning Models For Fun And Profit, Kangjie Chen, Shangwei Guo, Tianwei Zhang, Xiaofei Xie, Yang Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents the first model extraction attack against Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), which enables an external adversary to precisely recover a black-box DRL model only from its interaction with the environment. Model extraction attacks against supervised Deep Learning models have been widely studied. However, those techniques cannot be applied to the reinforcement learning scenario due to DRL models' high complexity, stochasticity and limited observable information. We propose a novel methodology to overcome the above challenges. The key insight of our approach is that the process of DRL model extraction is equivalent to imitation learning, a well-established solution to learn …

Frameaxis: Characterizing Microframe Bias And Intensity With Word Embedding, Haewoon Kwak, Jisun An, Elise Jing Jing, Yong-Yeol Ahn

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Framing is a process of emphasizing a certain aspect of an issue over the others, nudging readers or listeners towards different positions on the issue even without making a biased argument. Here, we propose FrameAxis, a method for characterizing documents by identifying the most relevant semantic axes (“microframes”) that are overrepresented in the text using word embedding. Our unsupervised approach can be readily applied to large datasets because it does not require manual annotations. It can also provide nuanced insights by considering a rich set of semantic axes. FrameAxis is designed to quantitatively tease out two important dimensions of how …

Privacy-Preserving Proof Of Storage For The Pay-As-You-Go Business Model, Tong Wu, Guomin Yang, Yi Mu, Fuchun Guo, Robert H. Deng Jul 2021

Privacy-Preserving Proof Of Storage For The Pay-As-You-Go Business Model, Tong Wu, Guomin Yang, Yi Mu, Fuchun Guo, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Proof of Storage (PoS) enables a cloud storage provider to prove that a client's data is intact. However, existing PoS protocols are not designed for the pay-as-you-go business model in which payment is made based on both storage volume and duration. In this paper, we propose two PoS protocols suitable for the pay-as-you-go storage business model. The first is a time encapsulated Proof of Retrievability (PoR) protocol that ensures retrievability of the original file upon successful auditing by a client. Considering the large size of outsourced data, we then extend the protocol to a privacy-preserving public auditing protocol which allows …

A Differentially Private Task Planning Framework For Spatial Crowdsourcing, Qian Tao, Yongxin Tong, Shuyuan Li, Yuxiang Zeng, Zimu Zhou, Ke Xu Jul 2021

A Differentially Private Task Planning Framework For Spatial Crowdsourcing, Qian Tao, Yongxin Tong, Shuyuan Li, Yuxiang Zeng, Zimu Zhou, Ke Xu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Spatial crowdsourcing has stimulated various new applications such as taxi calling and food delivery. A key enabler for these spatial crowdsourcing based applications is to plan routes for crowd workers to execute tasks given diverse requirements of workers and the spatial crowdsourcing platform. Despite extensive studies on task planning in spatial crowdsourcing, few have accounted for the location privacy of tasks, which may be misused by an untrustworthy platform. In this paper, we explore efficient task planning for workers while protecting the locations of tasks. Specifically, we define the Privacy-Preserving Task Planning (PPTP) problem, which aims at both total revenue …

A Mean-Field Markov Decision Process Model For Spatial-Temporal Subsidies In Ride-Sourcing Markets, Zheng Zhu, Jintao Ke, Hai Wang Jul 2021

A Mean-Field Markov Decision Process Model For Spatial-Temporal Subsidies In Ride-Sourcing Markets, Zheng Zhu, Jintao Ke, Hai Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Ride-sourcing services are increasingly popular because of their ability to accommodate on-demand travel needs. A critical issue faced by ride-sourcing platforms is the supply-demand imbalance, as a result of which drivers may spend substantial time on idle cruising and picking up remote passengers. Some platforms attempt to mitigate the imbalance by providing relocation guidance for idle drivers who may have their own self-relocation strategies and decline to follow the suggestions. Platforms then seek to induce drivers to system-desirable locations by offering them subsidies. This paper proposes a mean-field Markov decision process (MF-MDP) model to depict the dynamics in ride-sourcing markets …

How Important Is The Train-Validation Split In Meta-Learning?, Yu Bai, Minshuo Chen, Pan Zhou, Tuo Zhao, D. Jason Lee, Sham Kakade, Huan Wang, Caiming Xiong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Meta-learning aims to perform fast adaptation on a new task through learning a “prior” from multiple existing tasks. A common practice in meta-learning is to perform a train-validation split (train-val method) where the prior adapts to the task on one split of the data, and the resulting predictor is evaluated on another split. Despite its prevalence, the importance of the train-validation split is not well understood either in theory or in practice, particularly in comparison to the more direct train-train method, which uses all the pertask data for both training and evaluation. We provide a detailed theoretical study on whether …

Emotioncues: Emotion-Oriented Visual Summarization Of Classroom Videos, Haipeng Zeng, Xinhuan Shu, Yanbang Wang, Yong Wang, Liguo Zhang, Ting-Chuen Pong, Huamin Qu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Analyzing students' emotions from classroom videos can help both teachers and parents quickly know the engagement of students in class. The availability of high-definition cameras creates opportunities to record class scenes. However, watching videos is time-consuming, and it is challenging to gain a quick overview of the emotion distribution and find abnormal emotions. In this paper, we propose EmotionCues, a visual analytics system to easily analyze classroom videos from the perspective of emotion summary and detailed analysis, which integrates emotion recognition algorithms with visualizations. It consists of three coordinated views: a summary view depicting the overall emotions and their dynamic …

Exploring Cross-Modality Utilization In Recommender Systems, Quoc Tuan Truong, Aghiles Salah, Thanh-Binh Tran, Jingyao Guo, Hady W. Lauw Jul 2021

Exploring Cross-Modality Utilization In Recommender Systems, Quoc Tuan Truong, Aghiles Salah, Thanh-Binh Tran, Jingyao Guo, Hady W. Lauw

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Multimodal recommender systems alleviate the sparsity of historical user-item interactions. They are commonly catalogued based on the type of auxiliary data (modality) they leverage, such as preference data plus user-network (social), user/item texts (textual), or item images (visual) respectively. One consequence of this categorization is the tendency for virtual walls to arise between modalities. For instance, a study involving images would compare to only baselines ostensibly designed for images. However, a closer look at existing models' statistical assumptions about any one modality would reveal that many could work just as well with other modalities. Therefore, we pursue a systematic investigation …

On The Generalizability Of Neural Program Models With Respect To Semantic-Preserving Program Transformations, Md Rafiqul Islam Rabin, Nghi D. Q. Bui, Ke Wang, Yijun Yu, Lingxiao Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Context: With the prevalence of publicly available source code repositories to train deep neural network models, neural program models can do well in source code analysis tasks such as predicting method names in given programs that cannot be easily done by traditional program analysis techniques. Although such neural program models have been tested on various existing datasets, the extent to which they generalize to unforeseen source code is largely unknown. Objective: Since it is very challenging to test neural program models on all unforeseen programs, in this paper, we propose to evaluate the generalizability of neural program models with respect …

Addressing The ‘Unseens’: Digital Wellbeing In The Remote Workplace, Holtjona Galanxhi, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The ubiquity of sophisticated devices, along with uninterrupted access to the Internet and organizational computerized systems, allows for the “anyplace” workplace to be established. Technology has the potential to deliberately or inadvertently impact psychological wellbeing. Specific psychological demands are inadvertently imposed on remote employees whose permanent online presence is required. Hence, it is important to understand factors affecting digital wellbeing and steps that can be taken to maximize the wellbeing of remote employees. This paper provides suggestions for future research on studying the digital wellbeing of (fully or partially) remote employees. A research framework is proposed to demonstrate the different …

Recent Advances In Network-Based Methods For Disease Gene Prediction, Sezin Kircali Ata, Min Wu, Yuan Fang, Ou-Yang Le, Chee Keong Kwoh, Xiao-Li Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Disease-gene association through Genome-wide association study (GWAS) is an arduous task for researchers. Investigating single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that correlate with specific diseases needs statistical analysis of associations. Considering the huge number of possible mutations, in addition to its high cost, another important drawback of GWAS analysis is the large number of false-positives. Thus, researchers search for more evidence to cross-check their results through different sources. To provide the researchers with alternative and complementary low-cost disease-gene association evidence, computational approaches come into play. Since molecular networks are able to capture complex interplay among molecules in diseases, they become one of …

The Multi-Vehicle Cycle Inventory Routing Problem: Formulation And A Metaheuristic Approach, Vincent F. Yu, Audrey Tedja Widjaja, Aldy Gunawan, Pieter Vansteenwegen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents a new variant of the Multi-Vehicle Cyclic Inventory Routing Problem (MV-CIRP) which aims to determine a subset of customers to be visited, the appropriate number of vehicles used, and the corresponding cycle time and route sequence, such that the total cost (e.g. transportation, inventory, and rewards) is minimized. The MV-CIRP is formulated as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming model. We propose a Simulated Annealing (SA) based algorithm to solve the problem. SA is first tested on the available benchmark Single-Vehicle CIRP (SV-CIRP) instances and compared to the state-of-the-art algorithms. SA is then tested on the benchmark MV-CIRP instances …
