Improving Multi-Label Emotion Classification Via Sentiment Classification With Dual Attention Transfer Network, Jianfei Yu, Luis Marujo, Jing Jiang, Pradeep Karuturi, William Brendel

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we target at improving the performance of multi-label emotion classification with the help of sentiment classification. Specifically, we propose a new transfer learning architecture to divide the sentence representation into two different feature spaces, which are expected to respectively capture the general sentiment words and the other important emotion-specific words via a dual attention mechanism. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that our transfer learning approach can outperform several strong baselines and achieve the state-of-the-art performance on two benchmark datasets.

An Interpretable Neural Fuzzy Inference System For Predictions Of Underpricing In Initial Public Offerings, Di Wang, Xiaolin Qian, Chai Quek, Ah-Hwee Tan, Chunyan Miao, Xiaofeng Zhang, Geok See Ng, You Zhou Nov 2018

An Interpretable Neural Fuzzy Inference System For Predictions Of Underpricing In Initial Public Offerings, Di Wang, Xiaolin Qian, Chai Quek, Ah-Hwee Tan, Chunyan Miao, Xiaofeng Zhang, Geok See Ng, You Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Due to their aptitude in both accurate data processing and human comprehensible reasoning, neural fuzzy inference systems have been widely adopted in various application domains as decision support systems. Especially in real-world scenarios such as decision making in financial transactions, the human experts may be more interested in knowing the comprehensive reasons of certain advices provided by a decision support system in addition to how confident the system is on such advices. In this paper, we apply an integrated autonomous computational model termed genetic algorithm and rough set incorporated neural fuzzy inference system (GARSINFIS) to predict underpricing in initial public …

Predicting Visual Context For Unsupervised Event Segmentation In Continuous Photo-Streams, Ana García Del Molino, Joo-Hwee Lim, Ah-Hwee Tan Oct 2018

Predicting Visual Context For Unsupervised Event Segmentation In Continuous Photo-Streams, Ana García Del Molino, Joo-Hwee Lim, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Segmenting video content into events provides semantic structures for indexing, retrieval, and summarization. Since motion cues are not available in continuous photo-streams, and annotations in lifelogging are scarce and costly, the frames are usually clustered into events by comparing the visual features between them in an unsupervised way. However, such methodologies are ineffective to deal with heterogeneous events, e.g. taking a walk, and temporary changes in the sight direction, e.g. at a meeting. To address these limitations, we propose Contextual Event Segmentation (CES), a novel segmentation paradigm that uses an LSTM-based generative network to model the photo-stream sequences, predict their …

Deep Understanding Of Cooking Procedure For Cross-Modal Recipe Retrieval, Jingjing Chen, Chong-Wah Ngo, Fu-Li Feng, Tat-Seng Chua Oct 2018

Deep Understanding Of Cooking Procedure For Cross-Modal Recipe Retrieval, Jingjing Chen, Chong-Wah Ngo, Fu-Li Feng, Tat-Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Finding a right recipe that describes the cooking procedure for a dish from just one picture is inherently a difficult problem. Food preparation undergoes a complex process involving raw ingredients, utensils, cutting and cooking operations. This process gives clues to the multimedia presentation of a dish (e.g., taste, colour, shape). However, the description of the process is implicit, implying only the cause of dish presentation rather than the visual effect that can be vividly observed on a picture. Therefore, different from other cross-modal retrieval problems in the literature, recipe search requires the understanding of textually described procedure to predict its …

Multiperspective Graph-Theoretic Similarity Measure, Dung D. Le, Hady W. Lauw Oct 2018

Multiperspective Graph-Theoretic Similarity Measure, Dung D. Le, Hady W. Lauw

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Determining the similarity between two objects is pertinent to many applications. When the basis for similarity is a set of object-to-object relationships, it is natural to rely on graph-theoretic measures. One seminal technique for measuring the structural-context similarity between a pair of graph vertices is SimRank, whose underlying intuition is that two objects are similar if they are connected by similar objects. However, by design, SimRank as well as its variants capture only a single view or perspective of similarity. Meanwhile, in many real-world scenarios, there emerge multiple perspectives of similarity, i.e., two objects may be similar from one perspective, …

Automating Intention Mining, Qiao Huang, Xin Xia, David Lo, Gail C. Murphy Oct 2018

Automating Intention Mining, Qiao Huang, Xin Xia, David Lo, Gail C. Murphy

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Developers frequently discuss aspects of the systems they are developing online. The comments they post to discussions form a rich information source about the system. Intention mining, a process introduced by Di Sorbo et al., classifies sentences in developer discussions to enable further analysis. As one example of use, intention mining has been used to help build various recommenders for software developers. The technique introduced by Di Sorbo et al. to categorize sentences is based on linguistic patterns derived from two projects. The limited number of data sources used in this earlier work introduces questions about the comprehensiveness of intention …

Categorizing The Content Of Github Readme Files, Gede Artha Azriadi Prana, Christoph Treude, Ferdian Thung, Thushari Atapattu, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

README files play an essential role in shaping a developer’s first impression of a software repository and in documenting the software project that the repository hosts. Yet, we lack a systematic understanding of the content of a typical README file as well as tools that can process these files automatically. To close this gap, we conduct a qualitative study involving the manual annotation of 4,226 README file sections from 393 randomly sampled GitHub repositories and we design and evaluate a classifier and a set of features that can categorize these sections automatically. We find that information discussing the ‘What’ and …

Sentence Compression With Reinforcement Learning, Liangguo Wang, Jing Jiang, Lejian Liao Aug 2018

Sentence Compression With Reinforcement Learning, Liangguo Wang, Jing Jiang, Lejian Liao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Deletion-based sentence compression is frequently formulated as a constrained optimization problem and solved by integer linear programming (ILP). However, ILP methods searching the best compression given the space of all possible compressions would be intractable when dealing with overly long sentences and too many constraints. Moreover, the hard constraints of ILP would restrict the available solutions. This problem could be even more severe considering parsing errors. As an alternative solution, we formulate this task in a reinforcement learning framework, where hard constraints are used as rewards in a soft manner. The experiment results show that our method achieves competitive performance …

Neural Collective Entity Linking, Yixin Cao, Lei Hou, Juanzi Li, Zhiyuan Liu Aug 2018

Neural Collective Entity Linking, Yixin Cao, Lei Hou, Juanzi Li, Zhiyuan Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Entity Linking aims to link entity mentions in texts to knowledge bases, and neural models have achieved recent success in this task. However, most existing methods rely on local contexts to resolve entities independently, which may usually fail due to the data sparsity of local information. To address this issue, we propose a novel neural model for collective entity linking, named as NCEL. NCEL applies Graph Convolutional Network to integrate both local contextual features and global coherence information for entity linking. To improve the computation efficiency, we approximately perform graph convolution on a subgraph of adjacent entity mentions instead of …

Embedding Wordnet Knowledge For Textual Entailment, Yunshi Lan, Jing Jiang Aug 2018

Embedding Wordnet Knowledge For Textual Entailment, Yunshi Lan, Jing Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we study how we can improve a deep learning approach to textual entailment by incorporating lexical entailment relations from WordNet. Our idea is to embed the lexical entailment knowledge contained in WordNet in specially-learned word vectors, which we call “entailment vectors.” We present a standard neural network model and a novel set-theoretic model to learn these entailment vectors from word pairs with known lexical entailment relations derived from WordNet. We further incorporate these entailment vectors into a decomposable attention model for textual entailment and evaluate the model on the SICK and the SNLI dataset. We find that …

Knowledge As A Bridge: Improving Cross-Domain Answer Selection With External Knowledge, Yang Deng, Ying Shen, Min Yang, Yaliang Li, Nan Du, Wei Fan, Kai Lei

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Answer selection is an important but challenging task. Significant progresses have been made in domains where a large amount of labeled training data is available. However, obtaining rich annotated data is a time-consuming and expensive process, creating a substantial barrier for applying answer selection models to a new domain which has limited labeled data. In this paper, we propose Knowledge-aware Attentive Network (KAN), a transfer learning framework for cross-domain answer selection, which uses the knowledge base as a bridge to enable knowledge transfer from the source domain to the target domains. Specifically, we design a knowledge module to integrate the …

Searching For The X-Factor: Exploring Corpus Subjectivity For Word Embeddings, Maksim Tkachenko, Chong Cher Chia, Hady W. Lauw Jul 2018

Searching For The X-Factor: Exploring Corpus Subjectivity For Word Embeddings, Maksim Tkachenko, Chong Cher Chia, Hady W. Lauw

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We explore the notion of subjectivity, and hypothesize that word embeddings learnt from input corpora of varying levels of subjectivity behave differently on natural language processing tasks such as classifying a sentence by sentiment, subjectivity, or topic. Through systematic comparative analyses, we establish this to be the case indeed. Moreover, based on the discovery of the outsized role that sentiment words play on subjectivity-sensitive tasks such as sentiment classification, we develop a novel word embedding SentiVec which is infused with sentiment information from a lexical resource, and is shown to outperform baselines on such tasks.

A Co-Matching Model For Multi-Choice Reading Comprehension, Shuohang Wang, Mo Yu, Shiyu Chang, Jing Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Multi-choice reading comprehension is a challenging task, which involves the matching between a passage and a question-answer pair. This paper proposes a new co-matching approach to this problem, which jointly models whether a passage can match both a question and a candidate answer. Experimental results on the RACE dataset demonstrate that our approach achieves state-of-the-art performance.

Summarizing Source Code With Transferred Api Knowledge, Xing Hu, Ge Li, Xin Xia, David Lo, Shuai Lu, Zhi Jin Jul 2018

Summarizing Source Code With Transferred Api Knowledge, Xing Hu, Ge Li, Xin Xia, David Lo, Shuai Lu, Zhi Jin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Code summarization, aiming to generate succinct natural language description of source code, is extremely useful for code search and code comprehension. It has played an important role in software maintenance and evolution. Previous approaches generate summaries by retrieving summaries from similar code snippets. However, these approaches heavily rely on whether similar code snippets can be retrieved, how similar the snippets are, and fail to capture the API knowledge in the source code, which carries vital information about the functionality of the source code. In this paper, we propose a novel approach, named TL-CodeSum, which successfully uses API knowledge learned in …

Rumor Detection On Twitter With Tree-Structured Recursive Neural Networks, Jing Ma, Wei Gao, Kam-Fai Wong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Sentiment expression in microblog posts can be affected by user’s personal character, opinion bias, political stance and so on. Most of existing personalized microblog sentiment classification methods suffer from the insufficiency of discriminative tweets for personalization learning. We observed that microblog users have consistent individuality and opinion bias in different languages. Based on this observation, in this paper we propose a novel user-attention-based Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model with adversarial cross-lingual learning framework. The user attention mechanism is leveraged in CNN model to capture user’s language-specific individuality from the posts. Then the attention-based CNN model is incorporated into a novel …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Ubuntu is an open source software platform that runs everywhere from the smartphone, the tablet and the PC to the server and the cloud. In Ubuntu, there are many self-contained or third-party software packages for different use, and a bug report in Ubuntu could affect one or more packages simultaneously. Identifying the common package bugs in Ubuntu can help both developers and users better understand the packages they are developing or using, and also provide further guidelines to developers of similar packages in the future. In this paper, we perform a large-scale empirical study of common package bugs on Ubuntu …

On-Demand Deep Model Compression For Mobile Devices: A Usage-Driven Model Selection Framework, Sicong Liu, Yingyan Lin, Zimu Zhou, Kaiming Nan, Hui Liu, Junzhao Du

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recent research has demonstrated the potential of deploying deep neural networks (DNNs) on resource-constrained mobile platforms by trimming down the network complexity using different compression techniques. The current practice only investigate stand-alone compression schemes even though each compression technique may be well suited only for certain types of DNN layers. Also, these compression techniques are optimized merely for the inference accuracy of DNNs, without explicitly considering other application-driven system performance (e.g. latency and energy cost) and the varying resource availabilities across platforms (e.g. storage and processing capability). In this paper, we explore the desirable tradeoff between performance and resource constraints …

Evidence Aggregation For Answer Re-Ranking In Open-Domain Question Answering, Shuohang Wang, Mo Yu, Jing Jiang, Wei Zhang, Xiaoxiao Guo, Shiyu Chang, Zhiguo Wang, Tim Klinger, Gerald Tesauro, Murray Campbell May 2018

Evidence Aggregation For Answer Re-Ranking In Open-Domain Question Answering, Shuohang Wang, Mo Yu, Jing Jiang, Wei Zhang, Xiaoxiao Guo, Shiyu Chang, Zhiguo Wang, Tim Klinger, Gerald Tesauro, Murray Campbell

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A popular recent approach to answering open-domain questions is to first search for question-related passages and then apply reading comprehension models to extract answers. Existing methods usually extract answers from single passages independently. But some questions require a combination of evidence from across different sources to answer correctly. In this paper, we propose two models which make use of multiple passages to generate their answers. Both use an answer-reranking approach which reorders the answer candidates generated by an existing state-of-the-art QA model. We propose two methods, namely, strength-based re-ranking and coverage-based re-ranking, to make use of the aggregated evidence from …

We use a deep neural networkthat analyzes structural information of Java methods for bettercomments generation. We conduct …

Hierarchical Learning Of Cross-Language Mappings Through Distributed Vector Representations For Code, Nghi D. Q. Bui, Lingxiao Jiang May 2018

Hierarchical Learning Of Cross-Language Mappings Through Distributed Vector Representations For Code, Nghi D. Q. Bui, Lingxiao Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Translating a program written in one programming language to another can be useful for software development tasks that need functionality implementations in different languages. Although past studies have considered this problem, they may be either specific to the language grammars, or specific to certain kinds of code elements (e.g., tokens, phrases, API uses). This paper proposes a new approach to automatically learn cross-language representations for various kinds of structural code elements that may be used for program translation. Our key idea is two folded: First, we normalize and enrich code token streams with additional structural and semantic information, and train …

Eat & Tell: A Randomized Trial Of Random-Loss Incentive To Increase Dietary Self-Tracking Compliance, Palakorn Achananuparp, Ee Peng Lim, Vibhanshu Abhishek, Tianjiao Yun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A growing body of evidence has shown that incorporating behavioral economics principles into the design of financial incentive programs helps improve their cost-effectiveness, promote individuals' short-term engagement, and increase compliance in health behavior interventions. Yet, their effects on long-term engagement have not been fully examined. In study designs where repeated administration of incentives is required to ensure the regularity of behaviors, the effectiveness of subsequent incentives may decrease as a result of the law of diminishing marginal utility. In this paper, we introduce random-loss incentive-a new financial incentive based on loss aversion and unpredictability principles-to address the problem of individuals' …

Domain-Specific Cross-Language Relevant Question Retrieval, Bowen Xu, Zhenchang Xing, Xin Xia, David Lo, Shanping Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Chinese developers often cannot effectively search questions in English, because they may have difficulties in translating technical words from Chinese to English and formulating proper English queries. For the purpose of helping Chinese developers take advantage of the rich knowledge base of Stack Overflow and simplify the question retrieval process, we propose an automated cross-language relevant question retrieval (CLRQR) system to retrieve relevant English questions for a given Chinese question. CLRQR first extracts essential information (both Chinese and English) from the title and description of the input Chinese question, then performs domain-specific translation of the essential Chinese information into English, …

Does Journaling Encourage Healthier Choices? Analyzing Healthy Eating Behaviors Of Food Journalers, Palakorn Achananuparp, Ee Peng Lim, Vibhanshu Abhishek

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Past research has shown the benefits of food journaling in promoting mindful eating and healthier food choices. However, the links between journaling and healthy eating have not been thoroughly examined. Beyond caloric restriction, do journalers consistently and sufficiently consume healthful diets? How different are their eating habits compared to those of average consumers who tend to be less conscious about health? In this study, we analyze the healthy eating behaviors of active food journalers using data from MyFitnessPal. Surprisingly, our findings show that food journalers do not eat as healthily as they should despite their proclivity to health eating and …

Detect Rumor And Stance Jointly By Neural Multi-Task Learning, Jing Ma, Wei Gao, Kam-Fai Wong Apr 2018

Detect Rumor And Stance Jointly By Neural Multi-Task Learning, Jing Ma, Wei Gao, Kam-Fai Wong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In recent years, an unhealthy phenomenon characterized as the massive spread of fake news or unverified information (i.e., rumors) has become increasingly a daunting issue in human society. The rumors commonly originate from social media outlets, primarily microblogging platforms, being viral afterwards by the wild, willful propagation via a large number of participants. It is observed that rumorous posts often trigger versatile, mostly controversial stances among participating users. Thus, determining the stances on the posts in question can be pertinent to the successful detection of rumors, and vice versa. Existing studies, however, mainly regard rumor detection and stance classification as …

Perspective On And Re-Orientation Of Physical Proxies In Object-Focused Remote Collaboration, Martin Feick, Terrance Mok, Anthony Tang, Lora Oehlberg, Ehud Sharlin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Remote collaborators working together on physical objects have difficulty building a shared understanding of what each person is talking about. Conventional video chat systems are insufficient for many situations because they present a single view of the object in a flattened image. To understand how this limited perspective affects collaboration, we designed the Remote Manipulator (ReMa), which can reproduce orientation manipulations on a proxy object at a remote site. We conducted two studies with ReMa, with two main findings. First, a shared perspective is more effective and preferred compared to the opposing perspective offered by conventional video chat systems. Second, …

An Lstm Model For Cloze-Style Machine Comprehension, Shuohang Wang, Jing Jiang Mar 2018

An Lstm Model For Cloze-Style Machine Comprehension, Shuohang Wang, Jing Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Machine comprehension is concerned with teaching machines to answer reading comprehension questions. In this paper we adopt an LSTM-based model we designed earlier for textual entailment and propose two new models for cloze-style machine comprehension. In our first model, we treat the document as a premise and the question as a hypothesis, and use an LSTM with attention mechanisms to match the question with the document. This LSTM remembers the best answer token found in the document while processing the question. Furthermore, we observe some special properties of machine comprehension and propose a two-layer LSTM model. In this model, we …

Anatomy Of Online Hate: Developing A Taxonomy And Machine Learning Models For Identifying And Classifying Hate In Online News Media, Joni Salminen, Hind Almerekhi, Milica Milenkovic, Soon-Gyu Jung, Haewoon Kwak, Haewoon Kwak, Bernard J. Jansen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Online social media platforms generally attempt to mitigate hateful expressions, as these comments can be detrimental to the health of the community. However, automatically identifying hateful comments can be challenging. We manually label 5,143 hateful expressions posted to YouTube and Facebook videos among a dataset of 137,098 comments from an online news media. We then create a granular taxonomy of different types and targets of online hate and train machine learning models to automatically detect and classify the hateful comments in the full dataset. Our contribution is twofold: 1) creating a granular taxonomy for hateful online comments that includes both …

Leveraging The Trade-Off Between Accuracy And Interpretability In A Hybrid Intelligent System, Di Wang, Chai Quek, Ah-Hwee Tan, Chunyan Miao, Geok See Ng, You Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Neural Fuzzy Inference System (NFIS) is a widely adopted paradigm to develop a data-driven learning system. This hybrid system has been widely adopted due to its accurate reasoning procedure and comprehensible inference rules. Although most NFISs primarily focus on accuracy, we have observed an ever increasing demand on improving the interpretability of NFISs and other types of machine learning systems. In this paper, we illustrate how we leverage the trade-off between accuracy and interpretability in an NFIS called Genetic Algorithm and Rough Set Incorporated Neural Fuzzy Inference System (GARSINFIS). In a nutshell, GARSINFIS self-organizes its network structure with a small …

On Modeling Sense Relatedness In Multi-Prototype Word Embedding, Yixin Cao, Juanzi Li, Jiaxin Shi, Zhiyuan Liu, Chengjiang Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To enhance the expression ability of distributional word representation learning model, many researchers tend to induce word senses through clustering, and learn multiple embedding vectors for each word, namely multi-prototype word embedding model. However, most related work ignores the relatedness among word senses which actually plays an important role. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to capture word sense relatedness in multi-prototype word embedding model. Particularly, we differentiate the original sense and extended senses of a word by introducing their global occurrence information and model their relatedness through the local textual context information. Based on the idea of …
