Morphine And Clonidine Synergize To Ameliorate Low Back Pain In Mice, Maral Tajerian, Magali Millecamps, Laura S. Stone Jan 2012

Morphine And Clonidine Synergize To Ameliorate Low Back Pain In Mice, Maral Tajerian, Magali Millecamps, Laura S. Stone

Publications and Research

Chronic low back pain (LBP) is a debilitating condition associated with signs of axial and radiating pain. In humans with chronic LBP, opioids are often prescribed with varying outcomes and a multitude of side effects. Combination therapies, in which multiple pharmacological agents synergize to ameliorate pain without similar potentiation of adverse reactions, may be useful in improving therapeutic outcome in these patients. The SPARC-null mouse model of low back pain due to disc degeneration was used to assess the effects of opioid (morphine) andα2-adrenergic agonist (clonidine) coadministration on measures of axial and radiating pain. The results indicate that systemic morphine …

Whose Budget? Our Budget? Broadening Political Stakeholdership Via Participatory Budgeting, Celina Su Jan 2012

Whose Budget? Our Budget? Broadening Political Stakeholdership Via Participatory Budgeting, Celina Su

Publications and Research

In this thought piece, I attempt to contextualize New York City’s inaugural participatory budgeting (PB) process in the larger landscape of American political participation. I discuss how the bottom-up way in which stakeholders wrote the process’s rules in the first place, alongside the core role played by the two lead organizations, helped to broaden notions of stakeholdership among constituents. Ultimately, the first year’s primary achievement regarding political participation was not a specific set of outcomes, but a debut as an unfinished form of governance—one that began to engage traditionally marginalized constituents, to trigger their political imagination, and to prompt them …

The Light-Sensitive Conductance Of Melanopsin-Expressing Joseph And Hesse Cells In Amphioxus, Camila Pulido, Gerardo Malagón, Camilo Ferrer, Jun Kui Chen, Juan Manuel Angueyra, Enrico Nasi, María Del Pilar Gomez Jan 2012

The Light-Sensitive Conductance Of Melanopsin-Expressing Joseph And Hesse Cells In Amphioxus, Camila Pulido, Gerardo Malagón, Camilo Ferrer, Jun Kui Chen, Juan Manuel Angueyra, Enrico Nasi, María Del Pilar Gomez

Publications and Research

Two types of microvillar photoreceptors in the neural tube of amphioxus, an early chordate, sense light via melanopsin, the same photopigment as in “circadian” light detectors of higher vertebrates. Because in amphioxus melanopsin activates a Gq/phospholipase C cascade, like phototransduction in arthropods and mollusks, possible commonalities in the photoconductance were investigated. Unlike other microvillar photoreceptors, reversal of the photocurrent can only be attained upon replacement of extracellular Na+. In addition to Na+, Ca2+ is also permeant, as indicated by the fact that (a) in normal ionic conditions the photocurrent remains inward at Vm > ENa; (b) in Na-free solution a small …

Learning And Innovation In The Context Of Process-Focused Management Practices: The Case Of An Environmental Management System, Deepa Aravind Jan 2012

Learning And Innovation In The Context Of Process-Focused Management Practices: The Case Of An Environmental Management System, Deepa Aravind

Publications and Research

Adoption of process-focused management practices has been associated with inertia and rigidity in adopting firms. By drawing on the literature on routines and using survey data from 192 ISO 14001 certified facilities in the United States, I find that change catalysis or a deep form of learning which presents the opportunity for innovation can happen in this context. I also examine the internal and external determinants of change catalysis. By doing so I contribute to a better understanding of how process-focused management practices can be a source of innovation within firms.

Plasticity Of Corticospinal Neural Control After Locomotor Training In Human Spinal Cord Injury, Maria Knikou Jan 2012

Plasticity Of Corticospinal Neural Control After Locomotor Training In Human Spinal Cord Injury, Maria Knikou

Publications and Research

Spinal lesions substantially impair ambulation, occur generally in young and otherwise healthy individuals, and result in devastating effects on quality of life. Restoration of locomotion after damage to the spinal cord is challenging because axons of the damaged neurons do not regenerate spontaneously. Body-weight-supported treadmill training (BWSTT) is a therapeutic approach in which a person with a spinal cord injury (SCI) steps on a motorized treadmill while some body weight is removed through an upper body harness. BWSTT improves temporal gait parameters, muscle activation patterns, and clinical outcome measures in persons with SCI. These changes are likely the result of …

Diffuse Optical Imaging Using Decomposition Methods, Binlin Wu, M. Alrubaiee, W. Cai, M. Xu, S. K. Gayen

Publications and Research

Diffuse optical imaging (DOI) for detecting and locating targets in a highly scattering turbid medium is treated as a blind source separation (BSS) problem. Three matrix decomposition methods, independent component analysis (ICA), principal component analysis (PCA), and nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) were used to study the DOI problem. The efficacy of resulting approaches was evaluated and compared using simulated and experimental data. Samples used in the experiments included Intralipid-10% or Intralipid-20% suspension in water as the medium with absorptive or scattering targets embedded.

Family Processes, Beliefs About Intelligence, And Openness As Predictors Of English Language Learners’ Creative Problem Solving, Seokhee Cho, Norman Eng

Publications and Research

There has been a pressing need in creativity research to discover interactive relationships that can predict creative problem solving, particularly in the fastest growing demographic segment in public schools, immigrants. This study examined the best predictor for creative problem solving attributes of English Language Learners (ELLs) among family processes, beliefs about intelligence, and openness. 198 mathematically promising third graders in seven public schools were selected and administered questionnaires on their family processes, beliefs about intelligence, openness to experience, and creative problem solving attributes. It was found that the Asian English learners' creative problem solving were predicted better with their incremental …

Fluids, Anomalies And The Chiral Magnetic Effect: A Group-Theoretic Formulation, V. Parameswaran Nair, Rashmi Ray, Shubho Roy Jan 2012

Fluids, Anomalies And The Chiral Magnetic Effect: A Group-Theoretic Formulation, V. Parameswaran Nair, Rashmi Ray, Shubho Roy

Publications and Research

It is possible to formulate fluid dynamics in terms of group-valued variables. This is particularly suited to the cases where the fluid has nonabelian charges and is coupled to nonabelian gauge fields. We explore this formulation further in this paper. An action for a fluid of relativistic particles (with and without spin) is given in terms of the Lorentz and Poincare (or de Sitter) groups. Considering the case of particles with flavor symmetries, a general fluid action which also incorporates all flavor anomalies is given. The chiral magnetic and chiral vorticity effects as well as the consequences of the mixed …

Quantum Tunneling Of The Magnetic Moment In A Free Nanoparticle, Michael F. O'Keeffe, Eugene M. Chudnovsky, Dmitry A. Garanin Jan 2012

Quantum Tunneling Of The Magnetic Moment In A Free Nanoparticle, Michael F. O'Keeffe, Eugene M. Chudnovsky, Dmitry A. Garanin

Publications and Research

We study tunneling of the magnetic moment in a particle that has full rotational freedom. Exact energy levels are obtained and the ground-state magnetic moment is computed for a symmetric rotor. The effect of the mechanical freedom on spin tunneling manifests itself in a strong dependence of the magnetic moment on the moments of inertia of the rotor. Energy of the particle exhibits quantum phase transitions between states with different values of the magnetic moment. Particles of various shapes are investigated and quantum phase diagram is obtained.

Quantum Deflagration And Supersonic Fronts Of Tunneling In Molecular Magnets, Dmitry A. Garanin, Saaber Shoyed Jan 2012

Quantum Deflagration And Supersonic Fronts Of Tunneling In Molecular Magnets, Dmitry A. Garanin, Saaber Shoyed

Publications and Research

Theory of magnetic deflagration taking into account dipolar-controlled spin tunneling has been applied to the realistic model of molecular magnet Mn_12 Ac. At small transverse field, the front speed v has tunneling maxima on the bias field B_z reflecting those of the molecular spin's relaxation rate calculated from the density-matrix equation. At high transverse field, spin tunneling directly out of the metastable ground state leads to front speeds that can exceed the speed of sound. Both for the weak and strong transverse field, the spatial profile of the deflagration front near tunneling resonances shows a front of tunneling that triggers …

Dipolar-Controlled Spin Tunneling And Relaxation In Molecular Magnets, Dmitry A. Garanin Jan 2012

Dipolar-Controlled Spin Tunneling And Relaxation In Molecular Magnets, Dmitry A. Garanin

Publications and Research

Spin tunneling in molecular magnets controlled by dipole-dipole interactions (DDI) in the disordered state has been considered numerically on the basis of the microscopic model using the quantum mean-field approximation. In the actual case of a strong DDI spin coherence is completely lost and there is a slow relaxation of magnetization, described by t^{3/4} at short times. Fast precessing nuclear spins, included in the model microscopically, only moderately speed up the relaxation.

Cosmic String Interactions Induced By Gauge And Scalar Fields, Daniel N. Kabat, Debajyoti Sarkar Jan 2012

Cosmic String Interactions Induced By Gauge And Scalar Fields, Daniel N. Kabat, Debajyoti Sarkar

Publications and Research

We study the interaction between two parallel cosmic strings induced by gauge fields and by scalar fields with non-minimal couplings to curvature. For small deficit angles the gauge field behaves like a collection of non-minimal scalars with a specific value for the non-minimal coupling. We check this equivalence by computing the interaction energy between strings at first order in the deficit angles. This result provides another physical context for the "contact terms" which play an important role in the renormalization of black hole entropy due to a spin-1 field.

Holographic Representation Of Bulk Fields With Spin In Ads/Cft, Daniel N. Kabat, Gilad Lifschytz, Shubho Roy, Debajyoti Sarkar Jan 2012

Holographic Representation Of Bulk Fields With Spin In Ads/Cft, Daniel N. Kabat, Gilad Lifschytz, Shubho Roy, Debajyoti Sarkar

Publications and Research

We develop the representation of bulk fields with spin one and spin two in anti-de Sitter space, as non-local observables in the dual CFT. Working in holographic gauge in the bulk, at leading order in 1/N bulk gauge fields are obtained by smearing boundary currents over a sphere on the complexified boundary, while linearized metric fluctuations are obtained by smearing the boundary stress tensor over a ball. This representation respects AdS covariance up to a compensating gauge transformation. We also consider massive vector fields, where the bulk field is obtained by smearing a non-conserved current. We compute bulk two-point functions …

Casimir Effect: Edges And Diffraction, Dimitra Karabali Jan 2012

Casimir Effect: Edges And Diffraction, Dimitra Karabali

Publications and Research

The Casimir effect refers to the existence of a macroscopic force between conducting plates in vacuum due to quantum fluctuations of fields. These forces play an important role, among other things, in the design of nano-scale mechanical devices. Accurate experimental observations of this phenomenon have motivated the development of new theoretical approaches in dealing with the effects of different geometries, temperature etc. In this talk, I will focus on a new method we have developed in calculating the contribution to the Casimir effect due to diffraction from edges and holes in different geometries, at zero and at finite temperature.

Policing Gender, Sexuality And ‘Muslimness’, Anissa Helie Jan 2012

Policing Gender, Sexuality And ‘Muslimness’, Anissa Helie

Publications and Research

In her Introduction to the book Sexuality in Muslim Contexts: Restrictions and Resistance (ZED Book, UK), Anissa Helie discusses the notion of "Muslimness" and how such a homogenizing notion, if unchallenged, may serve to justify the policing of sexuality in various Muslim countries and communities.

The book itself looks at emerging trends that affect women’s sexuality, with a particular focus on Asia and the Middle East, and documents both the curtailing of sexual rights occurring in diverse Muslim societies and the strategies designed to counter these developments.

Yet this focus in no way suggests that the policing of gender and …

Problematizing "Autonomy" And "Tradition" With Regard To Veiling: A Response To Seval Yildirim, Anissa Helie Jan 2012

Problematizing "Autonomy" And "Tradition" With Regard To Veiling: A Response To Seval Yildirim, Anissa Helie

Publications and Research

Debates related to Muslim women’s dress, specifically, often pit religious freedom, individual liberty, and cultural rights against women’s rights and gender equality. Hélie's response to Yildirim (specifically her discussion of national and international legal responses to “headcoverings”) does not focus on legal aspects, but rather on gendered practices and their ideological roots.

Hélie adopts a global lens, recognizing that whilst historical and socio-political specificities are crucial to grasp the nuances of each context, questions related to dress codes in Muslim contexts nevertheless relate to issues affecting our world at large. Hélie discusses two main aspects of Yildirim's argument - namely: …

Risky Rights? Gender Equality And Sexual Diversity In Muslim Contexts, Anissa Helie Jan 2012

Risky Rights? Gender Equality And Sexual Diversity In Muslim Contexts, Anissa Helie

Publications and Research

In her contribution to Sexuality in Muslim Contexts: Restrictions and Resistance (ZED Book, UK), Anissa Hélie contrasts the emphasis on victimization of both ‘Muslim women’ and ‘gay Muslims’ in mainstream Western discourses with actual strategies designed by advocates of gender equality and sexual rights from Muslim contexts. These strategies include religious reinterpretation efforts in South Africa and Indonesia, and organizing geared towards public visibility in Lebanon, Turkey and Morocco.

Deconstructing the false dichotomy between an ‘enlightened West’ and ‘oppressive Muslim contexts’, Hélie insists on the need to take into account a broad range of factors that impact the ability of both …

The Politics Of Abortion Policy In The Heterogeneous "Muslim World", Anissa Helie Jan 2012

The Politics Of Abortion Policy In The Heterogeneous "Muslim World", Anissa Helie

Publications and Research

Legal frameworks inspired by Muslim jurisprudence (also referred to as Shari’a) regulate the lives of as many as 600 million women around the world, a majority of them living in Asia. Personal Status Codes or Family Codes impact various aspects of women’s status as citizens, professionals, wives, mothers, etc.

As in many other, non-Muslim contexts, questions linked to women’s bodies tend to generate fierce debates especially in the arena of reproductive rights. A number of women’s rights defenders from Muslim societies have noted that Family Codes often become more restrictive where conservative and/or extremist religious voices are able to influence, …
