Misremembering Risk In The Age Of Hurricanes: The Rhode Island Coast In The 1930s-1950s, Kara M. Schlichting Jan 2021

Misremembering Risk In The Age Of Hurricanes: The Rhode Island Coast In The 1930s-1950s, Kara M. Schlichting

Publications and Research

This paper explores the lost history of New England hurricanes and how the “return” of hurricanes challenged understandings of the environmental vulnerabilities of coastal communities and weather. A series of severe New England hurricanes from 1938-1954 forced Rhode Islanders to reassess coastal vulnerabilities and protection strategies. Before the hurricane of ’38, Rhode Islanders lived with the vulnerability of seasonal erosion and winter storms, but believed their state was, and would remain, safe from hurricanes. In a new era of the shore-at-risk, the Army Corps of Engineers re-wrote the forgotten history of coastal dangers. Dense development along Narragansett Bay and the …

A Review Of Sars-Cov-2, Responsible For Covid-19: History, Biology, Infection Mechanism, Antigenic Vaccines, Their Risks And How An Alternate Rbd Vaccine Is Safer?, Zmg Sarwar Jahangir, Arleta Helena Marnik

Publications and Research

The SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome)-CoV (Coronavirus)-2 S(spike)-protein mRNA/cDNA currently being used as vaccines are antigenic but not antigens against SARS-CoV-2, that causes COVID (Coronavirus Disease) -19. Furthermore, the mRNA and cDNA antigenic vaccines also have potentials for homologous as well as heterologous recombination, primarily into the somatic cell DNA of the vaccine recipients. On the contrary, a SARS-CoV-2 RBD-protein antigen, a part of the S-protein, will directly stimulate antibody production against SARS-CoV-2. Hence, a vaccine composed of SARS-CoV-2 RBD-protein as a safer, fast acting, and effective vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 and thus against COVID-19. This is also useful for some …

In Final Transmission: Performance Art and AIDS in LA, eds. Brian Getnick and Tanya Rubbak. When we chatted for an hour before to prepare, the first thing I asked you was how old you are. I’m 52, and you’re 54. But we realized that we didn’t know a lot about our shared history because we met in an activist part of the AIDS scene in Los Angeles. I picked up pieces about your history, and we’ve even collaborated, but I actually don’t know that much about you personally. Checking in before this public conversation, one of the things we realized …

A Twisted Generalization Of The Classical Dedekind Sum, Brad Isaacson Jan 2021

A Twisted Generalization Of The Classical Dedekind Sum, Brad Isaacson

Publications and Research

In this paper, we express three different, yet related, character sums in terms of generalized Bernoulli numbers. Two of these sums are generalizations of sums introduced and studied by Berndt and Arakawa–Ibukiyama–Kaneko in the context of the theory of modular forms. A third sum generalizes a sum already studied by Ramanujan in the context of theta function identities. Our methods are elementary, relying only on basic facts from algebra and number theory.

Geoprivacy, Convenience, And The Pursuit Of Anonymity In Digital Cities, Jerome Dobson, William A. Herbert Jan 2021

Geoprivacy, Convenience, And The Pursuit Of Anonymity In Digital Cities, Jerome Dobson, William A. Herbert

Publications and Research

Cities demand spatial efficiencies that can be achieved only through sharing of information. Current technologies support collection, processing, and dissemination of unprecedented quantities of personal, public, and corporate information. Inherent in this milieu is an inevitable contest among societal efficiency, corporate profits, consumer convenience, personal privacy, and even freedom. The authors examine current trends in technology, data collection, legislation, and public acceptance. They find that without broad specific regulations limiting location data collection and use—including a universal protected right for individuals to pursue anonymity—governments, commercial enterprises, employers, and individuals increasingly will exploit tracking technologies at the expense of geoprivacy.

Assessment Challenges In Acquired Aphasia In Multilingual Individuals, Monica Norvik, Mira Goral Jan 2021

Assessment Challenges In Acquired Aphasia In Multilingual Individuals, Monica Norvik, Mira Goral

Publications and Research

Aphasia is an acquired language disorder resulting from damage to the brain, most typically a stroke in the left cerebral hemisphere. The degree and type of impairment vary depending on the site and size of the lesion, and the extent to which people with aphasia recover – with time and therapeutic intervention – their pre-stroke linguistic skills varies, depending on exogenous and endogenous variables. Multilingual speakers who acquire aphasia may exhibit comparable or different profiles of impairment in each of their languages. The present chapter explores the challenges associated with the assessment of all languages of multilingual and multicultural speakers …

Strengthening The Semantic Verb Network In Multilingual People With Aphasia: Within- And Cross-Language Treatment Effects, Aviva Lerman, Mira Goral, Lisa Edmonds, Loraine K. Obler

Publications and Research

In multilingual people, semantic knowledge is predominantly shared across languages.
Providing semantic-focused treatment to people with aphasia has been posited to strengthen
connectivity within association cortices that subserve semantic knowledge. In multilingual people, such treatment should result in within- and cross-language generalisation to all languages, although not equally. We investigated treatment effects in two multilingual participants with aphasia who received verb-based semantic treatment in two pre-stroke highly
proficient languages. We compared within- and cross-language generalisation patterns across languages, finding within- and cross-language generalisation after treatment in the less-impaired, pre-morbidly more-proficient first-acquired language (L1). This observation supports the theory that connectivity …

All We Need Is One Mic: A Call For Anti-Racist Solidarity To Deconstruct Anti-Black Racism In Educational Leadership, Soribel Genao, Yaribel Mercedes

Publications and Research

In this article, we outline some of the vital measurements of racism and anti-blackness as a macro system in education. We contend that principal preparation programs have not explicitly prioritized anti-racist school leadership, while often resisting the possibilities of solidarity or one mic of knowledge to increase anti-racist dispositions. Considering the lexicon of whiteness as an assemblage, a racial discourse should be “supported by material practices and institutions,” that prepare educational leaders to examine anti-blackness curriculum that have been embedded as a standard method. We also posit that theoretical understanding of racism as global whiteness from a post-oppositional lens and …

Dynamics Of Transmission In Disordered Topological Insulators, Yuhao Kang, Yiming Huang, Azriel Genack Jan 2021

Dynamics Of Transmission In Disordered Topological Insulators, Yuhao Kang, Yiming Huang, Azriel Genack

Publications and Research

Robust transmission in topological insulators makes it possible to steer waves without attenuation along bent paths within imperfectly fabricated photonic devices. But the absence of reflection does not guarantee the fidelity of pulsed transmission which is essential for core photonic functionalities. Pulse transmission is disrupted by localized modes in the bulk of topological insulators which coexist with the continuum edge mode and are pushed deeper into the band gap with increasing disorder. Here we show in simulations of the Haldane model that pulse propagation in disordered topological insulators is robust throughout the central portion of the band gap where localized …

The following protocol describes our workflow for processing wastewater with the goal of detecting the genetic signal of SARS-CoV-2. The steps include pasteurization, virus concentration, RNA extraction, and quantification by RT-qPCR. We include auxiliary steps that provide new users with tools and strategies that will help troubleshoot key steps in the process. This protocol is one of the safest, cheapest, and most reproducible approaches for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater. Furthermore, the RNA obtained using this protocol, minus the pasteurization step, can be sequenced both using a targeted approach sequencing specific regions or the whole genome. The protocol …

Women’S Political Leadership And Adult Health: Evidence From Rural And Urban China, Hongwei Xu, Nancy Luke, Susan E. Short Jan 2021

Women’S Political Leadership And Adult Health: Evidence From Rural And Urban China, Hongwei Xu, Nancy Luke, Susan E. Short

Publications and Research

This study examined the role of women’s political leadership at the community level in China, a context that has experienced recent political and socioeconomic change and has a distinctive rural-urban divide. Drawing on longitudinal data from the China Family Panel Studies (N = 40,918~52,406 person-year observations), we found that female community directors outnumbered male directors in urban China but were much less common in rural areas. Female community directors had higher levels of human capital regardless of rural or urban location. Residents living in female-directed communities reported better mental health, but not physical health or life satisfaction, compared to those …

Computable Procedures For Fields, Russell Miller Jan 2021

Computable Procedures For Fields, Russell Miller

Publications and Research

This tutorial will introduce listeners to many questions that can be asked about computable processes on fields, and will present the answers that are known, sometimes with proofs. This is not original work. The questions in greatest focus here include decision procedures for the existence of roots of polynomials in specific fields, for the irreducibility of polynomials over those fields, and for transcendence of specific elements over the prime subfield. Several of these questions are related to the construction of algebraic closures, making Rabin's Theorem prominent.

Premarital Fertility And Marital Timing In Malawi, Michelle Poulin, Kathleen Beegle, Hongwei Xu Jan 2021

Premarital Fertility And Marital Timing In Malawi, Michelle Poulin, Kathleen Beegle, Hongwei Xu

Publications and Research

In Malawi, Africa, the median age at first marriage is among the lowest on the continent and adolescent fertility rates are among the highest. Using high-frequency panel data from the country designed to follow single women and men into marriage, we examine the extent to which premarital fertility is associated with the timing of marriage. Two notable findings emerge. First, premarital fertility typically leads to a more rapid transition into marriage, compared to those not having had a premarital conception or birth, with controls. The effect is as strong for men as it is for women. Second, among women with …

Toward Transformable Photonics: Reversible Deforming Soft Cavities, Controlling Their Resonance Split And Directional Emission, Mark Douvidzon, Shai Maayani, Harel Nagar, Tamir Admon, Vladimir Shuvayev, Lan Yang, Lev Deych, Yael Roichman, Tal Carmon

Publications and Research

We report on reversible and continuously deformable soft micro-resonators and the control of their resonance split and directional emission. Assisted by computerized holographic-tweezers, functioning as an optical deformer of our device, we gradually deform the shape and change the functionality of a droplet whispering-gallery cavity. For example, we continuously deform hexagonal cavities to rectangular ones and demonstrate switching to directionally emitting mode-of-operation, or splitting a resonant mode to a 10-GHz separated doublet. A continuous trend of improving spatial light modulators and tweezers suggests that our method is scalable and can control the shape and functionality of many individual devices. We …

Cultivating Multimodality From The Multilingual Epicenter: Queens, “The Next America”, Eunjeong Lee, Sara P. Alvarez, Amy J. Wan

Publications and Research

Understanding that multimodality is a critical part of language work, this article
examines the conditions for uptaking multimodality. With a focus on the material
conditions and/of the labor crucial in building a culture of multimodality, we discuss how our context of Queens College (QC), a senior college in the public-serving CUNY system, where the majority of the students represents what Hall (2009) has described as the “Next America,” shapes the implementation and the impact of multimodal work for our students and educators. Particularly for multilingual students, whose multimodal meaning-making potential is often disregarded as irrelevant to their “language needs” (Sánchez-Martín …

Publications and Research

Objectives: Lower body power declines with age and is associated with decreased physical function in older adults. However, the majority of the tools available to measure power are expensive and require considerable space and expertise to operate. The purpose of this study was to assess the validity, reliability, and measurement error of a sit-to-stand power test (STSp) to assess lower body power. Methods: 51 community-dwelling adults, 65 years or older, completed a power test using a pneumatic leg press (LP), the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) that includes a test of balance, usual walking speed, and chair stand tests; Timed …

Creating A Culturally Relevant Statistics Assignment On Z-Scores, Grace Pai Jan 2021

Creating A Culturally Relevant Statistics Assignment On Z-Scores, Grace Pai

Publications and Research

Culturally relevant teaching or pedagogy has become increasingly popular both in practice and in research, but there are still few curricular resources for instructors to use, particularly for a college-level mathematics course. Departing from the question “relevant to whom,” this article illustrates how to design a statistics assignment on z-scores that is culturally relevant to students based on their prior experiences. Ultimately, the author shares design principles—which includes the importance of considering student trauma—that can be transferable to any statistics or quantitative analysis/reasoning class.

Topological Terms And Diffeomorphism Anomalies In Fluid Dynamics And Sigma Models, V. Parameswaran Nair Jan 2021

Topological Terms And Diffeomorphism Anomalies In Fluid Dynamics And Sigma Models, V. Parameswaran Nair

Publications and Research

The requirement of diffeomorphism symmetry for the target space can lead to anomalous commutators for the energy-momentum tensor for sigma models and for fluid dynamics, if certain topological terms are added to the action. We analyze several examples . A particular topological term is shown to lead to the known effective hydrodynamics of a dense collection of vortices, i.e. the vortex fluid theory in 2+1 dimensions. The possibility of a similar vortex fluid in 3+1 dimensions, as well as a fluid of knots and links, with possible extended diffeomorphism algebras is also discussed.
