The Rhythmic Structure Of West African Music, V. Kofi Agawu
The Rhythmic Structure Of West African Music, V. Kofi Agawu
Publications and Research
The music of Africa has long intrigued many Westerners. From scattered comments in the accounts of explorers of the so-called Afrique Noire to the full-fledged ethnomusicological studies of the last fifty years, the constant theme has been the fundamental role of music-making in African life and society. And of all the elements of that music, rhythm has received the most attention.
There is something to be gained from looking closely at the early writings on African music, for although they represent the work of non-specialists, and for all their ethnocentricism and anthropocentricism, these accounts touch on the fundamental questions regarding …
Silencing In Public Schools, Michelle Fine
Silencing In Public Schools, Michelle Fine
Publications and Research
Demands for silencing signify a terror of words, a fear of talk. This essay examines these demands as they echoed through a comprehensive public high school in New York City. The silencing resounded in words and in their absence; the demands emanated from the New York City Board of Education, book publishers, corporate sponsors, religious institutions, administrators, teachers, parents, and students. In the odd study of what's not said in public schools, one must be curious about whom silencing protects, but vigilant about how silencing students and their communities undermines fundamentally the vision of education as empowerment (Freire 1985; Shor …

Evaluation Issues In A Quasi-Experiment On Teaching Thinking Skills, Irvin Sam Schonfeld
Publications and Research
Comments on the method used by R. J. Herrnstein et al (see record 1987-08654-001) to evaluate an educational intervention that was designed to advance the thinking skills of 7th graders. It would seem preferable to adopt multiple linear regression techniques, rather than the t-test, as the chief analytic tool.
Compactification Of The Twisted Heterotic String, V. Parameswaran Nair, Alfred Shapere, Andrew Strominger, Frank Wilczek
Compactification Of The Twisted Heterotic String, V. Parameswaran Nair, Alfred Shapere, Andrew Strominger, Frank Wilczek
Publications and Research
We consider compactifications of the recently discovered tachyon free non-supersymmetric string on tori of Lorentzian self dual lattices. The one loop cosmological constant is computed as a function of the parameters characterizing the lattices. When the lattice parameters are treated as dynamical variables, their equations of motion require extremization of A. This extremization determines the allowed gauge groups and mass spectra. We explicitly find some extremes of A, valid to all orders in perturbation theory. A very general duality relation between compactifications is demonstrated, which leads to an equivalence of compactifications on tori of radii R aud 1/R.
Puerto Rico: Colonialism Revisited, Sherrie Baver
Puerto Rico: Colonialism Revisited, Sherrie Baver
Publications and Research
Because Puerto Rico is not systematically consulted on issues central to its development and because this situation has become so obvious to all island officials during the last decade, elites across the entire Puerto Rican political spectrum felt pressured to ""come out of the colonial closet," tentatively in August 1977 and forthrightly in 1978.3 Every summer since, spokespersons from all political parties have gone before the UN Decolonization Committee to protest the status quo in Puerto Rico. Before 1977, only Puerto Rican Independentistas (who win only a small percentage in island elections), Cuba, and the Soviet Union had labeled Puerto …
Reversible Oxygenation Of Oxygen Transport Proteins, Charles Michael Drain, Barry B. Cordon
Reversible Oxygenation Of Oxygen Transport Proteins, Charles Michael Drain, Barry B. Cordon
Publications and Research
A lecture demonstration illustrating changes in the visible spectra of oxygen transport proteins upon reversihle oxygen binding is reported. The coloration upon exposure to oxygen is dramatic. Deoxyhemoglobin changes from purple to red, deoxyhemocyanin is transformed from colorless to blue, while colorless deoxyhemerythrin turns red. This demonstration illustrates an interesting example of a chemically reversible reaction and is used in the discussion of basic thermodynamic properties. A comparison of the physical characteristics of these oxveen storaee and transn.o rt ~ro- A teins is provided to illustrate the stru&ral diversity associated with these proteins having a similar biological role.

General Results On Glueball Masses In Qcd, I. J. Muzinich, V. Parameswaran Nair
General Results On Glueball Masses In Qcd, I. J. Muzinich, V. Parameswaran Nair
Publications and Research
A number of authors have investigated mass inequalities for mesons and baryons in QCD. These provide rigorous nonperturbative constraints on the mass spectrum. Similar inequalities for glueballs are investigated. For nonzero spin J, in the large-Nc approximation, mJ - ⩾ mJ+ is found. (For J = 0, the existence of a gluon condensate can modify this statement.) There are also constraints on how fast mJ can grow with J. For example, for mJ = a + bJα, 0 ⩽ α ⩽ 1 is found, a result consistent with Regge behaviour.
An Alternative View Of Education For Deaf Children: Part Ii, Lil Brannon, Sue Livingston
An Alternative View Of Education For Deaf Children: Part Ii, Lil Brannon, Sue Livingston
Publications and Research
How might deaf children acquire one of the primary goals of education literacy in English? This article suggests that literacy in English as well as knowledge of the English language can be acquired concomitantly through developmental reading and writing activities that reflect principles of first language acquisition if students bring to these activities relatable experiences which they have already linguistically represented. Such activities engage students in reading and writing where content and context support them in their attempts to actively understand and convey meaning in English. The end product of, rather than the prerequisite for, this meaningful reading and writing …
Tonal Strategy In The First Movement Of Mahler's Tenth Symphony, V. Kofi Agawu
Tonal Strategy In The First Movement Of Mahler's Tenth Symphony, V. Kofi Agawu
Publications and Research
During his summer retreat of 1910, Mahler sketched a five-movement symphony in F# major that was to be his tenth. He did not live to see the work completed. In spite of this, or rather because of it, the Tenth has accumulated a fascinating history, evident in the series of attempts to "realize" Mahler sketches, the best known of which is Deryck Cooke's "performing version."

An Alternative View Of Education For Deaf Children: Part I, Sue Livingston

Quigley and Kretschmer (1982) asserted that the primary goal of education for deaf children should be literacy in English. This article presents an alternative view that there be two primary goals: (a) thinking and learning through the development of meaning-making and meaning-sharing capacities and (b) the acquisition of literacy in English. In this article, the first of these goals is viewed as the more fundamental since it facilitates the acquisition of knowledge while it simultaneously serves as the prerequisite for the acquisition of literacy in English. Because neither direct language instruction nor the exclusive use of English in sign will …

Caring Choices: Decision-Making About Treatment For Catastrophically Ill Newborns, Betty Wolder Levin
Caring Choices: Decision-Making About Treatment For Catastrophically Ill Newborns, Betty Wolder Levin
Publications and Research
Decision making for catastrophically ill newborns has recently emerged as a social issue. Advances in biomedical technology and practice, and changes in other economic, social and political factors have led to controversy about norms to guide treatment choice. While much has been written on how such decisions should be made, there has been little social science research on how such decisions are actually made.
The purpose of this dissertation is to elucidate the way that clinicians think about treatment decisions for catastrophically ill newborns. The focus is on decision making with respect to the limitation of treatment in those situations …

To assess 'soft-sign' persistence and its correlates outside a referred sample, 159 members of a local birth cohort of the United National Collaborative Perinatal Project were traced and their performance on six neurological test scales was measured at age 17 by examiners blind to their status at age seven. A comparison group was also formed, who had been 'sign-free' at age seven. On four of the six tests (dysdiadochokinesis, mirror movements, dysgraphesthesia and motor slowness) index boys did significantly worse than the comparison boys; by contrast, index girls scored significantly worse than comparisons only on motor slowness.

Jaipongan: Indigenous Popular Music Of West Java, Peter L. Manuel, Randall Baier
Publications and Research
The advent of mass media - particularly cassettes and films - in Indonesia has led to the flowering of two mass popular music forms, namely, dangdut and jaipongan. Kroncong, an older urban popular form, presents a mixture of Portuguese folksong style and Indonesian features; dangdut style, while in some respects an extension of the orkes melayu tradition, is heavily influenced by Hindi film songs and Western pop; only jaipongan is purely Indonesian - or more properly speaking, Sundanese - in origin and style. While kroncong and dangdut have received some scholarly attention (Becker 1975, Heins 1975, Frederick 1982), jaipongan has …
Children And The Environment: Work, Play And Learning In Rural Sudan, Cindi Katz
Children And The Environment: Work, Play And Learning In Rural Sudan, Cindi Katz
Publications and Research
In agricultural economies, environmental learning and the use of environmental knowledge are central practices of social reproduction. The former is important because it encompasses the acquisition of important vocational skills and knowledge, and the latter because it is often integral to the work of providing or procuring basic needs goods and services. In these societies children learn about the environment--that is, about agriculture, animal husbandry and the use of local resources-- largely in the course of their work and play in a variety of settings. In rural areas of the Third World the transition to capitalist relations of production is …

Defines a neurological soft sign (NSS) as a particular form of deviant performance on a motor or sensory test in a neurological status examination. In the present study, 63 male and 26 female 17-yr-olds who had NSSs at 7 yrs of age were compared with sex- and age-matched controls with no NSSs at age 7 yrs. Data obtained on Ss included behavioral and neurological examination at age 7 yrs and psychiatric, neurologic, and IQ (e.g., WAIS) assessment at adolescence. All 6 females and 12 of the 15 males with an anxiety-withdrawal diagnosis and 13 of the 20 males with an …

Rhythm has remained the focus of much study of West African music since the pioneering studies of Ward (1927), Hornbostel (1928), Waterman (1948), Brandel (1951), Cudjoe (1953), Merriam (1959), and Jones (1959).
The Genevan And Cattell-Horn Conceptions Of Intelligence Compared: The Early Implementation Of Numerical Solution Aids, Irvin Sam Schonfeld
The Genevan And Cattell-Horn Conceptions Of Intelligence Compared: The Early Implementation Of Numerical Solution Aids, Irvin Sam Schonfeld
Publications and Research
The Genevan and Cattell-Horn theories of intelligence are compared. The theories are found to be similar in the following respects: Intelligence (operative intelligence and fluid ability) is conceptualized as adaptational in function; the products of everyday learning and crystallized skills reflect the impress of experience; one category of intelligence (operative intelligence, fluid ability) is conceptualized as prior or more fundamental than the other (learned products, crystallized skills). Important differences were also found: Whereas fluid ability is characterized as formless and fixed, operative intelligence is viewed as highly structured and evolving; a compensatory relation between noegenetic crystallized skills and fluid ability …
Listening To Babbitt, Joseph N. Straus
Listening To Babbitt, Joseph N. Straus
Publications and Research
The discussion that follows will take a listener-oriented, not a composer-oriented approach, and will concentrate on how a single passage of Babbitt's music, the first eighteen measures of the String Quartet No. 2, might be taken in, not on how it might have been made. Instead of beginning with precompositional materials (sets and arrays) and showing how they are musically concretized, we will begin with certain striking attractions of the musical surface. Furthermore, our efforts won't be directed toward deducing the underlying sets and arrays, a goal Babbitt himself derides as a sterile form of musical cryptanalysis. Instead, we …
