Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes once remarked: "To be seventy years young is sometimes more cheerful and hopeful than to be forty years old," (Cavanaugh, 1990). The comment by Justice Holmes is positive and rests on hope, the hope that we will be healthy in our old age and capable of living independently.

Occasional Paper No. 091-1: Small Towns Lack Capacity For Successful Development Efforts, B. J. Reed, David F. Paulsen

Smalltown residents in Nebraska put a high premium on the need for economic development efforts, yet most think their towns' efforts fall short. Some towns, especially the smallest, don't even try to put together a development project. And those that do try often need help of a kind that State and Federal agencies do not offer. Nonetheless, Nebraska is trying some new programs that match State aid with a town's needs and willingness for self-help. Based on a survey of 135 small towns in Nebraska.
Latent Hiv-1 Infection In Enriched Populations Of Blood Monocytes And T Cells From Seropositive Patients, Margaret J. Mcelrath, Ralph M. Steinman, Zanvil A. Cohn
Latent Hiv-1 Infection In Enriched Populations Of Blood Monocytes And T Cells From Seropositive Patients, Margaret J. Mcelrath, Ralph M. Steinman, Zanvil A. Cohn
Publications
The extent of latent HIV-1 infection in blood T cells and monocytes of 23 seropositive individuals was examined using DNA amplification (PCR) of HIV-1 sequences. Amplified DNA was found in at least one cell type in all seropositives tested, including 13 asymptomatic, 5 ARC, and 5 AIDS patients. Amplification with two or more primer sets from the gag, env, LTR occurred in 21 (91%) patients' T cells and 17 (74%) patients' monocytes. However, amplification with the LTR primers n monocytes was uncommon. Among four patients tested, amplified DNA continued to be detected after a greater than one thousand-fold dilution (< 500 cells) of both T cell and monocyte lysates. Repeat analysis after 7-9 mo in five seropositives yielded similar findings in T cells and monocytes, but some variation in the efficacy of amplification with individual primers occurred. There was no difference in those 10 patients who were taking AZT, compared to those who were untreated. Our results indicate that a fraction (< 1%) of both T cells and monocytes in blood carry a latent infection in all stages of HIV-1 disease and can serve as reservoirs throughout AZT therapy.

In 1904 the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission set out its criteria for awarding medals for heroism: an unpaid actor must have voluntarily risked life and limb to rescue a victim to whom he or she was unrelated by any family tie. Such behavior toward family members was expected. In these days of perilous family life the performance of obligations associated with ongoing family relations is no longer taken for granted but has taken on new, heroic dimensions. The volunteer mother, who renders her services to her child amply and without reward, is the hero of Robert Goldstein's new book, Mother-Love …

Capturing The Literature Of The Bar: A Proposal For Library Package Plans, Georgia Briscoe
Publications
Publications of state and local bar associations are difficult for libraries to acquire and maintain because bar associations' publication activities are often not centralized. Standing orders or package plans will enhance services of bar associations. The American Bar Association and Illinois State Bar Association offer models for other states to follow.

Sex, Lies And Videotape: The Pornographer As Censor, Marianne Wesson
Sex, Lies And Videotape: The Pornographer As Censor, Marianne Wesson
Publications
The legal branch of the women's movement, although of one mind on some subjects, is divided on the proper approach to pornography. Some feminists oppose the imposition of any legal burdens on pornography because they fear that feminist speech will be caught in the general suppression, and others believe that any such burdens must violate the first amendment. Professor Wesson suggests that pornography should be defined to include only those materials that equate sexual pleasure with the infliction of violence or pain, and imply approval of conduct that generates the actor's arousal or satisfaction through this infliction. So defined, pornography …

Measurement Of The 0.3-8.5 Mev Galactic Gamma-Ray Spectrum From The Galactic Center Direction, M J. Harris, Gerald H. Share, Mark D. Leising, R L. Kinzer, D C. Messina

The low-energy gamma-ray spectrum from the direction of the Galactic center is determined using data obtained with the SMM Gamma-Ray Spectrometer. It is found that the diffuse gamma-ray spectrum from the Galactic center region can be interpreted in a straightforward way as the sum of five components of a presented equation. The components include a hard power law dominating the continuum at high energies caused principally by cosmic ray electron bremsstrahlung radiation, two narrow lines due to Al-26 decay and positron annihilation, an excess continuum component below 0.511 MeV consistent with the annihilation of positrons by formation of Ps, and …

Limits On A Variable Source Of 511 Kev Annihilation Radiation Near The Galactic Center, Gerald H. Share, Mark D. Leising, Daniel C. Messina, William R. Purcell

The Gamma Ray Spectrometer (GRS) on the Solar Maximum Mission satellite (SMM) has observed a strong Galactic source of 511 keV annihilation radiation from its launch in 1980 to its reentry in 1989. These observations are consistent with an extended source having an intensity of about 0.002 gamma/sq cm/s averaged over the central radian of Galactic longitude. These data are searched for evidence of the variable Galactic center source of 511 keV line radiation which was reported to have reappeared in 1988 by Leventhal et al. The SMM data are consistent with, but do not require, a compact source emitting …

The Luminosities Of Bright H N Regions In Ngc 628 And Its O Star Formation Rate, Ted Von Hippel, Greg Bothun
Publications
Using narrow band CCD imaging we have identified 183 bright H n regions in the Sc galaxy NGC 628. These H n regions have luminosities which indicate that they are powered by young star clusters which contain ^ 100 ionizing stars. We attempt to reproduce the H ii region LF with and without models including stellar evolution. We find stellar evolution an important parameter in understanding the H n region LF and find that it allows star-forming galaxies to be more robust to star bursting episodes. Ranking the H n regions by luminosity and assuming that luminosity evolution is due …
The Gamma-Ray Light Curves Of Sn 1987a, Mark D. Leising, Gerald H. Share
The Gamma-Ray Light Curves Of Sn 1987a, Mark D. Leising, Gerald H. Share
Publications
Observations of the SN 1987A ejecta in four Co-56-decay gamma-ray lines, obtained using the SMM gamma-ray spectrometer between February 1987 and May 1989, are reported and analyzed. The instrument characteristics and data-reduction procedures are described, and the results are presented in extensive tables and graphs and discussed with reference to theoretical models. Gamma-ray fluxes significantly above possible instrumental levels (as determined from analysis of pre-1987 data) were detected in the second half of 1987 and the first half of 1988. The data are found to favor a model with some Co-56 in regions of low gamma-ray optical depth by 200 …

Dendritic Cells Are The Principal Cells In Mouse Spleen Bearing Immunogenic Fragments Of Foreign Proteins, Mary T. Crowley, Kayo Inaba, Ralph M. Steinman

We monitored the APC function of cells taken from the spleen and peritoneal cavity of mice that had been given protein antigens via the intravenous or intraperitoneal routes. Using the mAb 33D1 and N418 to negatively and positively select dendritic cells, we obtained evidence that dendritic cells are the main cell type in spleen that carries the protein in a form that is immunogenic for antigen-specific T cells. In vivo pulsed macrophages were not immunogenic and did not appear capable of transferring peptide fragments to dendritic cells.

Migration And Maturation Of Langerhans Cells In Skin Transplants And Explants, Christian P. Larsen, Ralph M. Steinman, Margit D. Witmer-Pack
Publications
The behavior of Langerhans cells (LC) has been examined after skin transplantation and in an organ culture system. Within 24 h (and even within 4 h of culture), LC in epidermal sheets from allografts, isografts, and explants dramatically increased in size and expression of major histocompatibility complex class II molecules, and their numbers were markedly decreased. Using a new procedure, dermal sheets were then examined. By 24 h, cells resembling LC were found close to the epidermal-dermal junction, and by 3 d, they formed cords in dermal lymphatics before leaving the skin. In organ culture, the cells continued to migrate …

T cells recognize peptides that are bound to MHC molecules on the surface of different types of antigen-presenting cells (APC). Antigen presentation most often is studied using T cells that have undergone priming in situ, or cell lines that have been chronically stimulated in vitro. The use of primed cells provides sufficient numbers of antigen-reactive lymphocytes for experimental study. A more complete understanding of immunogenicity, however, requires that one develop systems for studying the onset of a T cell response from unprimed lymphocytes, especially in situ. Here it is shown that mouse T cells can be reliably primed in situ …

Antigen Processing By Epidermal Langerhans Cells Correlates With The Level Of Biosynthesis Of Major Histocompatibility Complex Class Ii Molecules And Expression Of Invariant Chain, Ellen Puré, Kayo Inaba, Mary T. Crowley

Two prior studies with a small number of T cell lines have shown that the presentation of native protein antigens by epidermal Langerhans cells (LC) is regulated. When freshly isolated, LC are efficient antigen-presenting cells (APC), but after a period of culture LC are inefficient or even inactive. The deficit in culture seems to be a selective loss in antigen processing, since cultured LC are otherwise rich in major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II products and are active APC for alloantigens and mitogens, which do not require processing. We have extended the analysis by studying presentation to bulk populations of …
