Shaft Capacity Of Continuous Flight Auger Piles In Sand, Kenneth Gavin, David Cadogan, Patrick Casey Feb 2009

Shaft Capacity Of Continuous Flight Auger Piles In Sand, Kenneth Gavin, David Cadogan, Patrick Casey

Publications

This paper presents the results of a series of field experiments performed to study the development of shaft resistance on continuous flight auger piles installed in sand. The test piles were instrumented in order to separate the shaft and base resistance, and to allow the determination of the distribution of shaft resistance along the pile shaft. The tests highlighted the importance of accurate calculation of the shaft resistance for nondisplacement piles. At a typical maximum allowable pile head settlement of 25mm, more than 71% of the pile resistance was provided by shaft friction. Conventional methods of estimating shaft resistance were …

HD 100453 has an IR spectral energy distribution (SED) which can be fit with a power law plus a blackbody. Previous analysis of the SED suggests that the system is a young Herbig Ae star with a gas-rich, flared disk. We reexamine the evolutionary state of the HD 100453 system by refining its age (based on a candidate low-mass companion) and by examining limits on the disk extent, mass accretion rate, and gas content of the disk environment. We confirm that HD 100453B is a common proper motion companion to HD 100453A, with a spectral type of M4.0V-M4.5V, and derive …

Searching For Threshold Shifts In Spawner–Recruit Data, James E. Garvey, Russell A. Wright, Elizabeth A. Marschall Feb 2009

Searching For Threshold Shifts In Spawner–Recruit Data, James E. Garvey, Russell A. Wright, Elizabeth A. Marschall

Publications

Relationships between spawning fish (S) and surviving offspring (recruits, R) are typically assumed to be continuous and nonlinear. However, R may change abruptly with small changes in S if population-, community-, or ecosystem-scale processes trigger low adult reproduction and cause populations to shift abruptly to regimes of low recruitment. We simulated R with low mean and variation below a known S threshold and high mean and variation of R above it. We compared simulations with published S–R relationships. For all data, we fit a conventional Ricker-type S–R model, a logistic depensatory model, and also searched for an …

Habitat Characteristics Of Black Crappie Nest Sites In An Illinois Impoundment, Quinton E. Phelps, Adam M. Lohmeyer, Nicholas C. Wahl, John M. Zeigler, Gregory W. Whitledge

Publications

Ten nest colonies of black crappie Pomoxis nigromaculatus were visually located and verified by angling in Campus Lake, a small urban impoundment in southern Illinois. Habitat characteristics were measured at these nest sites and compared to habitat measurements obtained from 45 unused sites. Seven habitat characteristics (substrate firmness, temperature, dissolved oxygen, distance to deep water [3.8-m depth contour], substrate type, vegetation height, and vegetation density) were significantly different between nest sites and unused sites. Although temperature and dissolved oxygen were significantly different between nest sites and unused sites, all values were within the suitable range for black crappie spawning to …

Natural History Of Coastal Peruvian Solifuges With A Redescription Of Chinchippus Peruvianus And An Additional New Species (Arachnida, Solifugae, Ammotrechidae), Alessandro Catenazzi, Jack O. Brookhart, Paula E. Cushing

Publications

Two species of Chinchippus (Ammotrechidae) were studied in central Peru. Both species are endemic to the hyper-arid coastal desert and appear to derive most of their energy and nutrients from maritime prey, such as intertidal amphipods feeding on beach-cast algae or as arthropod scavengers feeding upon seabird and pinniped carcasses. Data on the spatial distribution of the two species were obtained from analyzing stomach contents of one common predator, the gecko Phyllodactylus angustidigitus, and suggest that both species are more abundant in insular than in mainland habitats. We redescribe Chinchippus peruvianus Chamberlin 1920, known only from a female specimen …

Magnetic And Transport Properties Of Co2mnsnxsb1−X Heusler Alloys, Moti R. Paudel, Christopher S. Wolfe, Heather M. A. Patton, Igor Dubenko, Naushad Ali, Joseph A. Christodoulides, Shane Stadler

Publications

We present the magnetic, structural, and transport properties of the quaternary Heusler alloys Co2MnSnxSb1−x (x = 0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.0), which have been theoretically predicted to be half-metallic. Magnetization measurements as a function of applied field show that the saturation moment for x = 1 (Co2MnSn) is near the Slater–Pauling value of 5μB; however, the moment for x = 0 (Co2MnSb) falls far short of its predicted value of 6μB. Resistivity as a function of temperature was measured from 5 to …

A New Triggering Receptor Expressed On Myeloid Cells (Trem) Family Member, Trem-Like 4, Binds To Dead Cells And Is A Dnax Activation Protein 12-Linked Marker For Subsets Of Mouse Macrophages And Dendritic Cells, Hiroaki Hemmi, Juliana Idoyaga, Koji Suda

Publications

Dendritic cells (DCs) are professional APCs that can control immune responses against self and altered self, typically foreign, determinants. DCs can be divided into several subsets, including CD8α+ and CD8α- DCs. These subsets possess specific functions. For example, mouse splenic CD8α+, but not CD8α- DCs selectively take up dying cells and cross-present cell-associated Ags to naive T cells. In this study, we identified genes that were more expressed in CD8α+ than CD8α- DCs by microarray analysis. Only one of these genes, when the extracellular domains were linked to human IgG Fc domain, could …

Identification Of Antigen-Presenting Dendritic Cells In Mouse Aorta And Cardiac Valves, Jae-Hoon Choi, Yoonkyung Do, Cheolho Cheong

Publications

Presumptive dendritic cells (DCs) bearing the CD11c integrin and other markers have previously been identified in normal mouse and human aorta. We used CD11c promoter-enhanced yellow fluorescent protein (EYFP) transgenic mice to visualize aortic DCs and study their antigen-presenting capacity. Stellate EYFP + cells were readily identified in the aorta and could be double labeled with antibodies to CD11c and antigen-presenting major histo-compatability complex (MHC) II products. The DCs proved to be particularly abundant in the cardiac valves and aortic sinus. In all aortic locations, the CD11c + cells localized to the subintimal space with occasional processes probing the vascular …

Dendritic Cells Require A Systemic Type I Interferon Response To Mature And Induce Cd4+ Th1 Immunity With Poly Ic As Adjuvant, Maria` P. Longhi, Christine Trumpfheller, Juliana Idoyaga

Publications

Relative to several other toll-like receptor (TLR) agonists, we found polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid (poly IC) to be the most effective adjuvant for Th1 CD4+ T cell responses to a dendritic cell (DC)-targeted HIV gag protein vaccine in mice. To identify mechanisms for adjuvant action in the intact animal and the polyclonal T cell repertoire, we found poly IC to be the most effective inducer of type I interferon (IFN), which was produced by DEC-205+ DCs, monocytes, and stromal cells. Antibody blocking or deletion of type I IFN receptor showed that IFN was essential for DC maturation and development of …

Reclaiming Paul? Reconfiguration As Reclamation In 3 Corinthians, Benjamin L. White Jan 2009

Reclaiming Paul? Reconfiguration As Reclamation In 3 Corinthians, Benjamin L. White

Publications

This article pursues an alternative approach to situating the historical circumstances and rhetorical strategies of the author of 3 Corinthians. Whereas most scholarship on 3 Corinthians has set out to ascertain the specific opponents lurking behind the polemic of the text (Simon Magus, Saturnilus, Marcion, Valentinus, etc.), I believe that this task is futile and that a close reading of the “Paul” constructed by the text’s author pays more fruitful dividends in situating the text. Specifically, I will argue that 3 Corinthians is a late secondcentury proto-orthodox invocation of the “Pastoral” Paul (i.e. the Paul of the Pastoral Epistles), …

A Theoretical Framework To Guide The Re-Engineering Of Technology Education, Todd R. Kelley, Nadia Kellam Jan 2009

A Theoretical Framework To Guide The Re-Engineering Of Technology Education, Todd R. Kelley, Nadia Kellam

Publications

Before leaders in technology education are able to identify a theoretical framework upon which a curriculum is to stand, they must first grapple with two opposing views of the purpose of technology education – education for all learners or career/technical education. Dakers (2006) identifies two opposing philosophies that can serve as a framework for technology education, both inspired by ancient Greece, with the works of Descartes and the birth of positivism. Later reappearing in Pascal’s writings of the mathematical mind, and finally with Rousseau in the mid 1700s, the theoretical arguments of academic verses vocational were established in education, and …

Adding Soft-Skills To The Hard Target Of Adequacy: The Case For Rearticulation Based On A Multifocal Analysis, Robert C. Knoeppel, Curtis A. Brewer, Jane Clark Lindle, Patricia F. First

Publications

The purpose of this study is to expand the definition of adequacy by adding soft skills as a measure of school productivity. The singular focus on academic standards inherent in education policy has prevented scholars from seeing the concept of adequacy through myriad perspectives and has contributed to a resegregation of schools. Education policy includes legal, historical, and political perspectives; research inquiries must accommodate these multiple foci. This study made use of multifocal analysis to investigate the development of the concept of adequacy in South Carolina. Conclusions suggest an expanded definition of adequacy has potential for addressing school financing policy, …

Becoming Jane Jacobs First Draft 2009, Peter L. Laurence

Publications

Jane Jacobs (1916-2006), author of The Death and Life of Great American Cities (1961), did not like the term “urban design” and did not describe herself as an architectural critic, but contributed significantly to the development of American architectural criticism and the new field of urban design. Although relatively little is known about Jacobs’ intellectual development, her influences, and her early writing career, before Death and Life was published, Jacobs was already among the most influential critics of urban renewal in the country. The book was a culmination of many years of studying and writing about the city; of working …
