Differential Geometry Of Moving Surfaces And Its Relation To Solitons, Andrei Ludu
Differential Geometry Of Moving Surfaces And Its Relation To Solitons, Andrei Ludu
Publications
In this article we present an introduction in the geometrical theory of motion of curves and surfaces in R3, and its relations with the nonlinear integrable systems. The working frame is the Cartan's theory of moving frames together with Cartan connection. The formalism for the motion of curves is constructed in the Serret-Frenet frames as elements of the bundle of adapted frames. The motion of surfaces is investigated in the Gauss-Weingarten frame. We present the relations between types of motions and nonlinear equations and their soliton solutions.

Efficient Uncertainty In Patent Interpretation, Harry Surden
Efficient Uncertainty In Patent Interpretation, Harry Surden
Publications
Research suggests that widespread uncertainty over the scopes of issued patents creates significant costs for third-party firms and may decrease innovation. This Article addresses the scope uncertainty issue from a theoretical perspective by creating a model of patent claim scope uncertainty.
It is often difficult for third parties to determine the legal coverage of issued patents. Scope underdetermination exists when the words of a patent claim are capable of a broad range of plausible scopes ex ante in light of the procedures for interpreting patents. Underdetermination creates uncertainty about claim coverage because a lay interpreter cannot know which interpretation will …
Teaching Controversial Topics, Jennifer S. Hendricks, Beth Burkstrand-Reid, June Carbone
Teaching Controversial Topics, Jennifer S. Hendricks, Beth Burkstrand-Reid, June Carbone
Publications
At the 2009 Future of Family Law Education conference at the William Mitchell School of Law,4 the authors participated in a panel discussing strategies for teaching controversial topics, which focused on teaching reproductive rights and related gender issues. This essay collects some of the strategies discussed at the conference. First we address what constitutes a "controversial" legal topic, outlining the several different ways in which a topic might be or become controversial within the context of a particular class. Next, we discuss the importance of laying the groundwork, throughout the semester, for the anticipated-and unanticipated-discussions surrounding controversial topics and techniques …

Dispersive Wave Equations For Solids With Microstructure, A. Berezovski, Juri Engelbrecht, Mihhail Berezovski
Dispersive Wave Equations For Solids With Microstructure, A. Berezovski, Juri Engelbrecht, Mihhail Berezovski
Publications
The dispersive wave motion in solids with microstructure is considered in the one-dimensional setting in order to understand better the mechanism of dispersion. It is shown that the variety of dispersive wave propagation models derived by homogenization, continualisation, and generalization of continuum mechanics can be unified in the framework of dual internal variables theory.
An Event-Based Approach To Describing And Understanding Museum Narratives, Paul Mulholland, Annika Wolff, Trevor Collins, Zdenek Zdrahal
An Event-Based Approach To Describing And Understanding Museum Narratives, Paul Mulholland, Annika Wolff, Trevor Collins, Zdenek Zdrahal

Current museum metadata tends to be focused around the properties of the heritage object such as the artist, style and date of creation. This form of metadata can index a museum’s collection but cannot express the relations between heritage objects and related concepts found in contemporary museum exhibitions. A modern museum exhibition, rather than providing a taxonomic classification of heritage objects, uses them in the construction of curatorial narratives to be interpreted by an audience. In this paper we outline how curatorial narratives can be represented semantically using our Curate Ontology. The Curate Ontology, informed by a detailed analysis of …

Motivating Industrial Engineering Students: The Effects Of Authentic Learning Experience, Gender And Class Standing, Danielle Mcdonnell, Marla E. Mayorga, Lisa C. Benson, Laine Mears
Publications
This paper explores the attitudes and factors contributing to the motivation of Industrial Engineering (IE) students, and how these relate to various ASPECTS of their educational experiences. A mixed methods sequential explanatory study was used, starting with a survey (n=50) to assess different aspects of student motivation, followed by interviews with a smaller population of students (n=8). Survey data revealed that female IE students valued being students, and saw their coursework as more instrumental to their success, more than their male counterparts. Survey data also showed that students with university-sponsored authentic learning experiences had significantly higher expectations of success in …
In Silico Modeling Of Ph-Optimum Of Protein-Protein Binding, Rooplekha C. Mitra, Zhe Zhang, Emil Alexov
In Silico Modeling Of Ph-Optimum Of Protein-Protein Binding, Rooplekha C. Mitra, Zhe Zhang, Emil Alexov
Publications
Protein-protein association is a pH-dependent process and thus the binding affinity depends on the local pH. In vivo the association occurs in a particular cellular compartment, where the individual monomers are supposed to meet and form a complex. Since the monomers and the complex exist in the same micro environment, it is plausible that they coevolved toward its properties, in particular, toward the characteristic subcellular pH. Here we show that the pH at which the monomers are most stable (pH-optimum) or the pH at which stability is almost pH-independent (pH-flat) of monomers are correlated with the pH-optimum of maximal affinity …

Gravity Couplings In The Standard-Model Extension, Quentin G. Bailey
Gravity Couplings In The Standard-Model Extension, Quentin G. Bailey
Publications
The Standard-Model Extension (SME) is an action-based expansion describing general Lorentz violation for known matter and fields, including gravity. In this talk, I will discuss the Lorentz-violating gravity couplings in the SME. Toy models that match the SME expansion, including vector and two-tensor models, are reviewed. Finally I discuss the status of experiments and observations probing gravity coefficients for Lorentz violation.

A Comprehensive Rocket And Radar Study Of Midlatitude Spread F, G.D. Earle, P. Bhaneja, P.A. Roddy, C.M. Swenson, A. Barjatya, R. L. Bishop, Et. Al
Publications
An instrumented sounding rocket launched from Wallops Island Virginia has flown through a midlatitude spread F (MSF) event in conjunction with simultaneous ionosonde, HF radar, and 244 MHz scintillation observations from the ground. The in situ measurements include the electric field, horizontal neutral wind, and plasma density within the spread F region. The ground‐based HF radar measurements of wave signatures in the bottomside F region ledge reveal the presence of waves propagating to the north and northwest prior to and during the spreading event. The periods of these bottomside waves range from 16 to 60 min, and they are shown …
Oh And Oi Airglow Layer Modulation By Ducted Short-Period Gravity Waves: Effects Of Trapping Altitude, Jonathan B. Snively, Victor P. Pasko, Michael J. Taylor
Oh And Oi Airglow Layer Modulation By Ducted Short-Period Gravity Waves: Effects Of Trapping Altitude, Jonathan B. Snively, Victor P. Pasko, Michael J. Taylor
Publications
Perturbations to the OH and OI [O(1S) 557.7 nm] airglow layers by ducted gravity waves near the Brunt‐Väisälä period are investigated using a 2‐D numerical model. Airglow signatures of these waves are strongly determined by perturbations of O, O3, and H, which exhibit peak densities near and above mesopause. Strong periodic vertical wind components of short‐period gravity waves induce opposite relative density perturbations above and below the layer density peaks. Airglow signatures for ducted waves depend on the specific vertical shapes and altitudes of the wave packets relative to ambient species density profiles; waves perturbing only the bottoms or tops …
A Sensitivity Analysis Of Gibbs Sampling For 3pno Irt Models, Yanyan Sheng
A Sensitivity Analysis Of Gibbs Sampling For 3pno Irt Models, Yanyan Sheng
Publications
The performance of the Gibbs sampling procedure for the three-parameter normal ogive (3PNO) IRT model was investigated using Monte Carlo simulations. Model parameters were estimated for tests with 10, 20, and 40 items and samples of 100, 300, 500, and 1000 examinees, where different actual values and prior specifications were considered for the item parameters. Summary statistics showed that this procedure was more affected by the choice of the prior distributions for the three-parameter model than the two-parameter model. For the 3PNO model, appropriate informative priors with relatively small spread should be adopted for the slope and intercept parameters to …
Teaching Goals Of Interpreter Educators, Stephen Fitzmaurice
Teaching Goals Of Interpreter Educators, Stephen Fitzmaurice
Publications
Angelo & Cross (1993) found substantial differences in the teaching goals of faculty from different disciplines, yet they found no differences for educators based on their employment status or the type of institution in which they worked. The current quantitative study compared the teaching goals of interpreter educators with those of educators from other disciplines. Respondents were asked to rate the importance of 52 goal statements from Angelo & Cross’ Teaching Goal Inventory (TGI) in terms of what they aim to have students accomplish in their courses. The data suggest that interpreter education constitutes a separate discipline from the nine …

Model-Based Control To Enhance A Novel Two Dimensional Positioning System, Chan Yet Wong, Carlos Montes, Laine Mears, John Ziegert
Model-Based Control To Enhance A Novel Two Dimensional Positioning System, Chan Yet Wong, Carlos Montes, Laine Mears, John Ziegert
Publications
This paper presents a model-based control algorithm to address the delayed feedback that occurs in a novel two dimensional positioning system. The delayed feedback causes the motion control system unable to track the desire setpoint accurately and at the same time introduce following error. Thus, a Modified Smith Predictor is proposed to address the delayed feedback by having an inner plant model to predict the path during the delay. Furthermore, an online system identification scheme is proposed to improve the accuracy of the model used in Modified Smith Predictor. Simulation and experimental results of the Modified Smith Predictor and online …
Coxeter Groups And Asynchronous Cellular Automata, Matthew Macauley, Henning S. Mortveit
Coxeter Groups And Asynchronous Cellular Automata, Matthew Macauley, Henning S. Mortveit
Publications
The dynamics group of an asynchronous cellular automaton (ACA) relates properties of its long term dynamics to the structure of Coxeter groups. The key mathematical feature connecting these diverse fields is involutions. Group-theoretic results in the latter domain may lead to insight about the dynamics in the former, and vice-versa. In this article, we highlight some central themes and common structures, and discuss novel approaches to some open and open-ended problems. We introduce the state automaton of an ACA, and show how the root automaton of a Coxeter group is essentially part of the state automaton of a related ACA.
New Tests Of General Relativity, Quentin Bailey
New Tests Of General Relativity, Quentin Bailey
Publications
The last decade has seen a rapid increase in the number of precision tests of relativity. This research has been motivated by the intriguing possibility that tiny deviations from relativity might arise in the underlying theory that is widely believed to successfully mesh General Relativity (GR) with quantum physics. Many of these tests have been analyzed within an effective field theory framework which generically describes possible deviations from exact relativity and contains some traditional test frameworks as limiting cases. One part of the activity has been a resurgence of interest in tests of relativity in the Minkowski-spacetime context, where Lorentz …

Challenges To Informed Peer Review Matching Algorithms, Matthew Verleger, Heidi Diefes-Dux, Matthew W. Ohland, Mary Besterfield-Sacre, Sean Brophy
Publications
Background Peer review is a beneficial pedagogical tool. Despite the abundance of data instructors often have about their students, most peer review matching is by simple random assignment. In fall 2008, a study was conducted to investigate the impact of an informed algorithmic assignment method, called Un‐weighted Overall Need (UON), in a course involving Model‐Eliciting Activities (MEAs). The algorithm showed no statistically significant impact on the MEA Final Response scores. A study was then conducted to examine the assumptions underlying the algorithm.
Purpose (Hypothesis) This research addressed the question: To what extent do the assumptions used in making informed peer …
Defining An Abrasion Index For Lunar Surface Systems As A Function Of Dust Interaction Modes And Variable Concentration Zones, Ryan L. Kobrick, David M. Klaus, Kenneth W. Street Jr.
Defining An Abrasion Index For Lunar Surface Systems As A Function Of Dust Interaction Modes And Variable Concentration Zones, Ryan L. Kobrick, David M. Klaus, Kenneth W. Street Jr.
Publications
Unexpected issues were encountered during the Apollo era of lunar exploration due to detrimental abrasion of materials upon exposure to the fine-grained, irregular shaped dust on the surface of the Moon. For critical design features involving contact with the lunar surface and for astronaut safety concerns, operational concepts and dust tolerance must be considered in the early phases of mission planning. To systematically define material selection criteria, dust interaction can be characterized by two-body or three-body abrasion testing, and sub-categorically by physical interactions of compression, rolling, sliding and bending representing specific applications within the system. Two-body abrasion occurs when a …
Spatiotemporal Two-Dimensional Solitons In The Complex Ginzburg-Landau Equation, Florent Berard, S.C. Mancas
Spatiotemporal Two-Dimensional Solitons In The Complex Ginzburg-Landau Equation, Florent Berard, S.C. Mancas
Publications
We introduce spatiotemporal solitons of the two-dimensional complex Ginzburg-Landau equation (2D CCQGLE) with cubic and quintic nonlinearities in which asymmetry between space-time variables is included. The 2D CCQGLE is solved by a powerful Fourier spectral method, i.e., a Fourier spatial discretization and an explicit scheme for time differencing. Varying the system's parameters, and using different initial conditions, numerical simulations reveal 2D solitons in the form of stationary, pulsating and exploding solitons which possess very distinctive properties. For certain regions of parameters, we have also found stable coherent structures in the form of spinning (vortex) solitons which exist as a result …
Deformation Waves In Microstructured Materials: Theory And Numerics, Juri Engelbrecht, Arkadi Berezovski, Mihhail Berezovski
Deformation Waves In Microstructured Materials: Theory And Numerics, Juri Engelbrecht, Arkadi Berezovski, Mihhail Berezovski
Publications
A linear model of the microstructured continuum based on Mindlin theory is adopted which can be represented in the framework of the internal variable theory. Fully coupled systems of equations for macro-motion and microstructure evolution are represented in the form of conservation laws. A modification of wave propagation algorithm is used for numerical calculations. Results of direct numerical simulations of wave propagation in periodic medium are compared with similar results for the continuous media with the modelled microstructure. It is shown that the proper choice of material constants should be made to match the results obtained by both approaches

Computational Analysis Of Missense Mutations Causing Snyder-Robinson Syndrome, Zhe Zhang, Shaolei Teng, Liangjiang Wang, Charles E. Schwartz, Emil Alexov
Publications
The Snyder-Robinson syndrome is caused by missense mutations in the spermine sythase gene that encodes a protein (SMS) of 529 amino acids. Here we investigate, in silico, the molecular effect of three missense mutations, c.267G>A (p.G56S), c.496T>G (p.V132G), and c.550T>C (p.I150T) in SMS that were clinically identified to cause the disease. Single-point energy calculations, molecular dynamics simulations, and pKa calculations revealed the effects of these mutations on SMS's stability, flexibility, and interactions. It was predicted that the catalytic residue, Asp276, should be protonated prior binding the substrates. The pKa calculations indicated the p.I150T mutation causes pKa changes …

Probing The Evolving Massive Star Population In Orion With Kinematic And Radioactive Tracers, R. Voss, R. Diehl, J. S. Vink, Dieter H. Hartmann
Publications
Context. Orion is the nearest star-forming region to host a significant number of young and massive stars. The energy injected by these OB stars is thought to have created the Eridanus superbubble. Because of its proximity, Orion is a prime target for a detailed investigation of the interaction between massive stars and their environment. Aims. We study the massive star population of Orion and its feedback in terms of energy and mass, in order to compare the current knowledge of massive stars with kinematic and radioactive tracers in the surrounding interstellar medium (ISM). Methods. We assembled a census of the …

A Detailed Model Atmosphere Analysis Of Cool White Dwarfs In The Sloan Digital Sky Survey, Mukremin Kilic, Ted Von Hippel, Et Al.
Publications
We present optical spectroscopy and near-infrared photometry of 126 cool white dwarfs (WDs) in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Our sample includes high proper motion targets selected using the SDSS and USNO-B astrometry and a dozen previously known ultracool WD candidates. Our optical spectroscopic observations demonstrate that a clean selection of large samples of cool WDs in the SDSS (and the SkyMapper, Pan-STARRS, and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope data sets) is possible using a reduced proper motion diagram and a tangential velocity cut-off (depending on the proper motion accuracy) of 30 km s–1. Our near-infrared observations reveal eight …
