Coulomb De-Excitation Of C12 In A Helium Gas At High Density And Temperature, P B. Shaw, Donald D. Clayton
Coulomb De-Excitation Of C12 In A Helium Gas At High Density And Temperature, P B. Shaw, Donald D. Clayton
Publications
The report contains calculations of the extent to which the formation of C12 nuclei is speeded up in a dense hot helium plasma by the Coulomb de-excitation of its transiently formed excited states.
Termination Of The S-Process, Donald D. Clayton, M E. Rassbach
Termination Of The S-Process, Donald D. Clayton, M E. Rassbach
Publications
The nucleosynthesis of heavy stable nuclei by successive captures of neutrons in a weak neutron flux (the s-process) is terminated at large atomic weight by alpha decay to isotopes of lead. We analyze the details of this termination and calculate the abundances of lead and bismuth isotopes synthesized by the exposure of lighter nuclei to neutrons. We demonstrate that the results are nearly insensitive to the poorly known neutron-capture cross-section of Pb368. The continuous distribution of integrated neutron exposures responsible for the observed abundances has an anomalously large high-exposure component. This result suggests that the bulk of the lead has …

Omaha Unemployment Feasibility Study: Final Report, Larry D. Barnett, Kenneth Root, George Helling
Publications
The research reported here was designed to test the feasibility of a practical approach to the reduction of unemployment, particularly among Negroes.
The need for the particular kind of emphasis used in this approach was recently stated by the director of the U.S. Employment Service in pointing out the need to obtain " more understanding of the things that make the community tick, that keep it from solving its problems, and that lead to the discovery of the real barriers to coordination..."

Nucleosynthesis Of Heavy Elements By Neutron Capture, Philip A. Seeger, William A. Fowler, Donald D. Clayton
Nucleosynthesis Of Heavy Elements By Neutron Capture, Philip A. Seeger, William A. Fowler, Donald D. Clayton
Publications
Nucleosynthesis of elements heavier than the iron group by neutron capture on both slow and fast time scales is evaluated. The s-process calculations of Clayton, Fowler, Hull, and Zimmerman (1961) have been revised to include more recent experimental results on abundances and neutron capture cross- sections. The solar-system s-process abundances indicate a history of neutron exposure distributions characterized by decreasing probability of high integrated flux; an exponential exposure distribution is extracted. Estimates are made of the s-process contribution to each isotopic abundance; a table gives the amounts of elements produced by each process in the solar-system material. The r-process calculations …
Radioactivity In Supernova Remnants, Donald D. Clayton, W L. Craddock
Radioactivity In Supernova Remnants, Donald D. Clayton, W L. Craddock
Publications
We calculate implications of the idea developed by Burbidge et al. that the nearly exponential decrease after the (irst 100 days of the light-curves of Type i supernovae is due to nuclear energy released by the spontaneous fission of Cf354. Uncertainty of the correctness of the Cf-hypothesis qualifies any interpretation of (1) supernovae light-curves, (2) the location and mechanism of heavy-element nucleosynthesis by rapid neutron captures, and (3) the present-day energy balance in supernova remnants We demonstrate that, if the Cf-hypothesis is correct, the Crab Nebula presently has a radioactive energy input of 1 2 X 1030 ergs/sec, of which …

Cosmoradiogenic Chronologies On Nucleosynthesis, Donald D. Clayton
Cosmoradiogenic Chronologies On Nucleosynthesis, Donald D. Clayton
Publications
New methods for using radioactive decays to date the time of nucleosynthesis in our Galaxy are preed in this work. The methods depend upon a comparison of the cosmoradiogenic abundances of ghter species with the abundances of their radioactive parents. The decays which can provide useful rmation of this type are Re187-Os187, and U238-Pb206. It will be shown that the amount of enrichment of the daughter products by radioactive decay throughout the history of our Galaxy is ulable. This calculation differs from previous radioactive chronologies which have concentrated on relative abundances of the radioactive species themselves, U2 U238, and Th232. …
