Explosive Nucleosynthesis In Helium Zones, W M. Howard, W David Arnett, Donald D. Clayton
Explosive Nucleosynthesis In Helium Zones, W M. Howard, W David Arnett, Donald D. Clayton
Publications
We study by numerical integration the network of nuclear reactions that are expected to occur when the helium zones of a star are instantaneously heated and allowed to expand adiabatically. The dependence of the results on nuclear cross-sections, on the peak temperature, and on the time scale of the hydrodynamic expansion are discussed. Of particular interest is the result that the nucleus `4N, constituting about 2 percent by mass following the earlier operation of the CNO cycle, is substantially converted into 150, 15F, 15Ne, and 21Ne in ratios close to the solar abundances of 55N, 80, 55F, and 21Ne. It …

Annotated Bibliography Of The Center For Urban Affairs Data Bank/Information Center, Kenton J. Fancolly, Keith D. Maw
Publications
The Center for Urban Affairs maintains a Data Bank/Information Center, consisting of urban-related periodicals, newspaper clippings, bibliographies, and documents.
In an effort to familiarize users with the contents of the Data Bank, the CUA has compiled an annotated bibliography, which will be periodically updated to include new materials. Many of the documents listed are available on loan to Data Bank users. Other documents which cannot be loaned, are available for use in the Center, or pages of interest may be Xeroxed.

In September of 1971 The Regents' Commission on the Urban University of the 70's Report recommended that:
"... the Commission recommends that UNO bring educational opportunities to the people by further expansion and development of instruction in Program Centers away from the main campus ......... "
Since the receipt of that recommendation the University has established permanent and ad hoc program centers remote from the main campus (i.e., Center for Urban Education, Allwine Farm, sculpture lab and continuing studies in the WOW Building, YWCA, New Federal Building) in addition to continuing a search for a major facility in the "Downtown …
Measuring The Rate Of Nucleosynthesis With A Gamma-Ray Detector, Donald D. Clayton, Joseph Silk
Measuring The Rate Of Nucleosynthesis With A Gamma-Ray Detector, Donald D. Clayton, Joseph Silk
Publications
The gamma-ray lines emitted when 56Ni decays to 56Fe are shown to provide a photon flux which is a significant fraction of the diffuse background near 1 MeV. Successful measurement of the line profties can reveal both the present and past rates of nucleosynthesis in the Universe.

Direct Production Of 56fe In Silicon Quasi-Equilibria And The Problem Of 58ni, Donald D. Clayton, Stanford E. Woosley
Direct Production Of 56fe In Silicon Quasi-Equilibria And The Problem Of 58ni, Donald D. Clayton, Stanford E. Woosley
Publications
We consider two questions of importance to the science of nucleosynthesis: (1) Can 56Fe, rather than 56Ni, have been synthesized in its observed ratio to 28Si within a silicon-burning quasi-equilibrium? (2) What accounts for the large abundance of 58Ni? The answer to the first question is in the negative, be- cause a large overabundance of other neutron-rich nuclei, especially 54Fe or 52Cr, appears in the quasi- equilibrium distributions which yield the observed abundance ratio for 56Fe/28Si. The large 58Ni abun- dance seems to imply one of the following: (1) the iron peak is synthesized in an e-process dominated by "Ni, …
Gamma-Ray Lines From Young Supernova Remnants, Donald D. Clayton, Stirling A. Colgate, Gerald J. Fishman
Gamma-Ray Lines From Young Supernova Remnants, Donald D. Clayton, Stirling A. Colgate, Gerald J. Fishman
Publications
The gamma-ray luminosity of a typical type I supernova remnant has been calculated by assuming that the origin of the optical luminosity is due to the energy of the radioactive decay of Ni56. Tt is ex- pected that Ni56 is the most abundant nucleus resulting from silicon burning in the supernova shock conditions. The requisite mass of Ni56 (0.14 Mo) gives rise to gamma-ray lines with energies near 1 MeV that should be detectable in young supernova remnants at distances up to a few Mpc. Future detectors aboard satellites should be able to detect events at the rate of about …
Teaching Communication Skills In The Context Of The World Of Work: A Pilot Project, Barbara L. Brilhart
Teaching Communication Skills In The Context Of The World Of Work: A Pilot Project, Barbara L. Brilhart
Publications
The survey of projects was initiated by Miss Kessler, who located sources pertaining to work-orientation in the junior high school, remedial programs for drop-outs, and programs in which language skills were taught in the context of teaching units and courses in occupations. A form was mailed to various cities to obtain curricula and reports on projects.
During the summer of 1968, the author read 200 articles, curricula and project reports in an effort to gain insights into objectives, activities and evaluations of work-orientation programs. The result of this survey will be reported in three sections: (1) concepts of work-orientation; (2) …

In the past few years the University of Nebraska at Omaha has become increasingly committed to the study and alleviation of urban problems, Involvement of faculty, administration, and students in the life of the community and the demand for courses in urban affairs have stimulated an awareness of the need for an organized and rapid method of information retrieval in relation to the Omaha metropolitan area,
Neutron Tunneling In 3he(3he,2p)4he, Robert M. May, Donald D. Clayton
Neutron Tunneling In 3he(3he,2p)4he, Robert M. May, Donald D. Clayton
Publications
We investigate the possibility that in the astrophysically interesting energy range (i.e., well below the Coulomb barrier), the reaction 3He(3He,2p)4He proceeds predominantly by a neutron tunneling mechanism. Rough calculations of the magnitude and energy dependence of the total cross-section and of the shape of the proton differential cross-section are made on this basis. The results are in moderate agreement with recent experiments, and tend to justify a smooth extrapolation of these laboratory results down to the lower energies of astrophysical significance.

Unemployment In Omaha In Relation To The Armour Closing, Kenneth Root, John P. Zipay
Unemployment In Omaha In Relation To The Armour Closing, Kenneth Root, John P. Zipay
Publications
On September 29, 1967, Armour and. Company announced that effective six months from that date, the Omaha Armour plant would be closed, displacing a labor force of approximately 2, 200 workers. This statement, announcing the closing of the third meatpacking firm in Omaha within the past two years, was startling and indicative of far- reaching consequences for Omaha, its people and economy. Numerous social agencies, along with the Chamber of Commerce and the Nebraska Employment Service, became involved in joining together in a united effort through the development of their own organization-- ACT, the Armour Coordinating Team. ACT is an …
