Seasonal And Latitudinal Variations Of Gravity Wave-Driven Fluctuations In Oh Nightglow, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D., R. L. Walterscheid, G. Schubert Oct 1992

Seasonal And Latitudinal Variations Of Gravity Wave-Driven Fluctuations In Oh Nightglow, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D., R. L. Walterscheid, G. Schubert

Publications

The seasonal and latitudinal variations of the gravity wave-driven fluctuations in the OH nightglow are investigated theoretically using a model that accounts for emission from an extended OH layer and includes the effects of eddy diffusivities in the gravity wave dynamics. The mean (unperturbed) state is obtained from a two-dimensional, nighttime model so that mean-state number densities, temperatures and eddy diffusivities are all self-consistent. Seasonal and latitudinal variations in the background OH nightglow emission and in the propagation and dissipation characteristics of the gravity waves influence how the OH nightglow modulations due to gravity waves depend on season and latitude. …

The Co-57 Abundance In Sn 1987a, Mark D. Leising, Donald D. Clayton, Lih-Sin The, W N. Johnson, J D. Kurfess

Publications

Astrophysical implications of the detection by OSSE of Co-57 gamma radiation from SN 1987A are discussed. By burying the alpha-rich-freezeout portion at deeper gamma depths than in published models, it is shown that it remains barely possible that the bolometric luminosity during days 1200-1800 could derive from Co-57 power without requiring 57/56 production ratios greater than twice solar. Alternative mechanisms which may contribute to the bolometric power at late times are proposed.

The Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment on the Arthur Holly Compton Gamma Ray Observatory satellite uses four actively shielded NaI (Tl)-CsI(Na) phoswich detectors to provide gamma-ray line and continuum detection capability in the 0.05-10 MeV energy range. The instrument includes secondary capabilities for gamma-ray and neutron detection between 10 and 250 MeV. The detectors have 3.8 deg x 11.04 deg (FWHM) fields of view defined by tungsten collimators. Each detector has an independent, single-axis orientation system which permits offset pointing from the spacecraft Z-axis for background measurements and multitarget observations. The instrument, and its calibration and performance, are described.

Effects Of Dextro-Methamphetamine On Subjective Fatigue, C. A. Dejohn, Scott Shappell, D. F. Neri Aug 1992

Effects Of Dextro-Methamphetamine On Subjective Fatigue, C. A. Dejohn, Scott Shappell, D. F. Neri

Publications

Declining aircrew performance during periods of sustained flight operations (SUSOPs) has underscored the need to develop effective countermeasures. This paper reports on the ability of the central nervous system (CNS) stimulant d-methamphetamine to alleviate the detrimental effects of a simulated SUSOPs on subjective fatigue. Subjective fatigue was repeatedly measured by three questionnaires. The simulated SUSOP started at 1800 and consisted of a 9-h planning session followed by 4 h of rest and a 14-h mission. After 6 h of sleep, the 9/4/14 work/rest/work pattern was repeated. At 4 1/2 h into the second mission, 13 subjects were administered 10 mg …

Sic Particles From Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars: Mg Burning And The S-Process, Lawrence E. Brown, Donald D. Clayton Jun 1992

Sic Particles From Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars: Mg Burning And The S-Process, Lawrence E. Brown, Donald D. Clayton

Publications

The question of whether isotopically anomalous SiC particles found in meteorites originate in AGB stars is addressed. It is shown that if the peak helium shell flash temperatures of massive (6-9 solar masses) stars are about 10 percent larger than they are normally assumed to be, alpha particle reactions with the magnesium will become significant. Then the (Mg-29)(alpha, n)Si-29 reaction produces a large excess of Si-29. With a light element nuclear reaction network, the evolution of the silicon isotopic composition during AGB evolution is calculated. It is found that the experimentally determined correlation between excess Si-29 and excess Si-30 in …

Meteoritics And The Origins Of Atomic Nuclei, Donald D. Clayton Jun 1992

Meteoritics And The Origins Of Atomic Nuclei, Donald D. Clayton

Publications

The science of nucleosynthesis was substantially inspired by chemical analyses of meteorites. As if in repayment, that theory now imbues meteoritics with enlarged meaning. I recount the emergence of four great issues for nucleosynthesis—issues that received decades of my own attention; and I describe unexpected abundance patterns within meteorites that were suggested by the resolution of those issues. The latter have altered the information content of meteoritic science.

Random samples were drawn in Douglas County, Nebraska (N = 196, mean age = 73.8 years), in the counties surrounding Douglas County also served by the Eastern Nebraska Office on Aging (N = 104, mean age = 72.4 years), and in eleven of the rural Sandhills counties of Nebraska (N = 200, mean age = 76.6). Participants responded to structured interviews of 169 questions that included self-assessed health status, availability of health care and physician services, costs, attitudes toward health care services, health experiences and beliefs. While the Sandhills respondents were significantly older and had less access to health services, …

The B7/Bb1 Antigen Provides One Of Several Costimulatory Signals For The Activation Of Cd4+ T Lymphocytes By Human Blood Dendritic Cells In Vitro, James W. Young, Lydia Koulova, Steve A. Soergel Jan 1992

The B7/Bb1 Antigen Provides One Of Several Costimulatory Signals For The Activation Of Cd4+ T Lymphocytes By Human Blood Dendritic Cells In Vitro, James W. Young, Lydia Koulova, Steve A. Soergel

Publications

T cells respond to peptide antigen in association with MHC products on antigen-presenting cells (APCs). A number of accessory or costimulatory molecules have been identified that also contribute to T cell activation. Several of the known accessory molecules are expressed by freshly isolated dendritic cells, a distinctive leukocyte that is the most potent APC for the initiation of primary T cell responses. These include ICAM-1 (CD54), LFA-3 (CD58), and class I and II MHC products. Dendritic cells also constitutively express the accessory ligand for CD28, B7/BB1, which has not been previously identified on circulating leukocytes freshly isolated from peripheral blood. …

Generation Of Large Numbers Of Dendritic Cells From Mouse Bone Marrow Cultures Supplemented With Granulocyte/Macrophage Colony-Stimulating Factor, Kayo Inaba, Muneo M. Inaba, Nikolaus Romani Jan 1992

Generation Of Large Numbers Of Dendritic Cells From Mouse Bone Marrow Cultures Supplemented With Granulocyte/Macrophage Colony-Stimulating Factor, Kayo Inaba, Muneo M. Inaba, Nikolaus Romani

Publications

Antigen-presenting, major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II-rich dendritic cells are known to arise from bone marrow. However, marrow lacks mature dendritic cells, and substantial numbers of proliferating less-mature cells have yet to be identified. The methodology for inducing dendritic cell growth that was recently described for mouse blood now has been modified to MHC class II-negative precursors in marrow. A key step is to remove the majority of nonadherent, newly formed granulocytes by gentle washes during the first 2-4 d of culture. This leaves behind proliferating clusters that are loosely attached to a more firmly adherent “stroma.” At days 4-6 …

Mechanisms Of Mouse Spleen Dendritic Cell Function In The Generation Of Influenza-Specific, Cytolytic T Lymphocytes, Rita Nonacs, Cornelia Humborg, James P. Tam, Ralph M. Steinman

Publications

We have evaluated the capacity of dendritic ceUs to function as antigen-presenting cells (APCs) for influenza and have examined their mechanism of action. Virus-pulsed dendritic cells were 100 times more efficent than bulk spleen ceUs in stimulating cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) formation. The induction of CTLs required neither exogenous lymphokines nor APCs in the responding T cell population. Infectious virus entered dendritic cells through intraceUular acidic vacuoles and directed the synthesis of several viral proteins. If ultravidet (UV)-inactivated or bromdain-treated viruses were used, viral protein synthesis could not be detected, and there was poor induction of CTLs. This indicated that …

Identification Of Proliferating Dendritic Cell Precursors In Mouse Blood, Kayo Inaba, Ralph M. Steinman, Margit D. Witmer-Pack Jan 1992

Identification Of Proliferating Dendritic Cell Precursors In Mouse Blood, Kayo Inaba, Ralph M. Steinman, Margit D. Witmer-Pack

Publications

While it has been known that dendritic cells arise from proliferating precursors in situ, it has been difficult to identify progenitors in culture. We find that aggregates of growing dendritic cells develop in cultures of mouse blood that are supplemented with granulocyte/macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) but not other CSFs. The dendritic cell precursor derives from the Ia-negative and nonadherent fraction. The aggregates of developing dendritic cells appear at about 1 wk of culture, with 100 or more such clusters being formed per 106 blood leukocytes. The aggregates can be dislodged and subcultured as expanding clusters that are covered with cells …

Challenges And Successes With Including Kentucky's Parents In School-Based Decision Making: Pilot Year School Councils Respond, Jane Clark Lindle Jan 1992

Challenges And Successes With Including Kentucky's Parents In School-Based Decision Making: Pilot Year School Councils Respond, Jane Clark Lindle

Publications

The 1990 Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA) provided, among other measures, a new governance body for schools called "School Councils." These school-based, decision-making councils are composed of parents and teachers and headed by principals. This paper presents findings of a study that explored the effects of KERA's provision for school councils on parent involvement. Data were gathered from a survey of a nonrandom sample of 1991-92 pilot school councils (n=66). Most school councils reported that they used only two or three ways to notify parents of meetings, and only one or two methods to apprise parents of school decisions. Some …

Developing School Based Decision Making Capacities In Kentucky: Communication Satisfaction After The Pilot Year, Jane Clark Lindle

Publications

Among several innovations in public school curriculum and financing, the 1990 Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA) also included a school-governance provision. School-Based Decision Making (SBDM) Councils include administrators, teachers, and parents in addressing school-level curriculum and instructional issues. These groups have not had a history of collaboration. This paper presents findings of a study that described the developing relationships among these constituent groups at the end of the pilot year. Data were derived from a survey that asked 385 pilot-year School Council members to rate their satisfaction with council communication on a Likert-type inventory. Usable responses were received from 211 …

Heavy-Element Abundances From A Neutron Burst That Produces Xe-H, W Michael Howard, Bradley S. Meyer, Donald D. Clayton

Publications

We examine quantitatively the suggestion that the heavy anomalous isotopes of Xe-HL found in meteoritic diamonds were produced by a short intense neutron burst and then implanted into the diamonds. Using a large nuclear reaction network we establish one (out of many) neutron irradiation histories that successfully reproduces the heavy isotopes of Xe-HL, and then evaluate what that same history would produce in every heavy element. This has become more relevant following recent measurement of anomalous Ba and Sr in those same diamond samples. Therefore we offer these calculations as a guide to the anomalies to be expected in all …

School Leadership And Educational Reform: Parent Involvment, The Education For Handicapped Children Act, And The Principal, Jane Clark Lindle Jan 1992

School Leadership And Educational Reform: Parent Involvment, The Education For Handicapped Children Act, And The Principal, Jane Clark Lindle

Publications

Originally passed in 1975, the Education for Handicapped Children Act (EHA or P.L. 94-142) provided an unprecedented legislative definition of parent involvement. Congress mandated that parents be included in the educational decision-making process concerning handicapped children. This paper summarizes parent involvement as defined by the EHA, reviews the literature on implementation of EHA's provision for parent involvement, and offers recommendations for principals' leadership in supporting parent involvement. Principals are advised to create a school climate conducive to parent involvement through parent induction programs and staff development.

Role Of Temperature, Dissolved Oxygen, And Backwaters In The Winter Survival Of Freshwater Drum (Aplodinotus Grunniens) In The Mississippi River, Leo R. Bodensteiner, William M. Lewis Jan 1992

Role Of Temperature, Dissolved Oxygen, And Backwaters In The Winter Survival Of Freshwater Drum (Aplodinotus Grunniens) In The Mississippi River, Leo R. Bodensteiner, William M. Lewis

Publications

Annual winter impingement of large numbers of freshwater drum (Aplodinotus grunniens) on screens of a power station intake on the Mississippi River led to an investigation of the cause of impingement. Impingement occurred most abundantly in winter and early spring and primarily involved juvenile fish. Pronounced drift of moribund and dead fish was found in the main channel above and below the power station in late winter. Laboratory studies indicated that juvenile freshwater drum became disoriented, incapacitated, and suffered increased mortality as water temperature dropped to 1 °C and below. In winter and early spring, temperatures were 0 …

Publications

Principal components extraction with orthogonal and oblique rotations tested construct validity for the Personal Profile System. MOST-LIKE endorsements of 96 behavioral descriptors were coded with 4, LEAST-LIKE with 1, and unendorsed with 2.5. Descriptor data from 1,045 senior noncommissioned Air Force officers were normalized. Four factors accounted for 85% of total variance, with 19 descriptors loading significantly on two factors and the remaining 77 on just one factor. The measure of sampling adequacy for every descriptor exceeded .94. One factor for the varimax-rotated (best) analysis was bi-scalar, loading on Steadiness and Compliance descriptors; a second resembled Influencing, a third loaded …

Use Of A Commercially Available Flight Simulator During Aircrew Performance Testing, S. A. Shappell, B. J. Bartosh

Publications

Investigations of aircrew sustained operations (SUSOPS) have been criticized for employing tasks with no apparent external validity. Because measures obtained directly from aviators flying high-performance aircraft are difficult to obtain, a laboratory compromise is needed. High-fidelity flight simulators used for aircrew training offer the most realistic simulation, but their availability is limited. Personal computer-based flight simulators may provide adequate simulation in, the laboratory at a reasonable cost. This report describes a representative research protocol using a commercially available flight simulator during a simulated aircrew SUSOP.
