Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
After finishing his education at the University of Munich, the German pharmacist Dr. Heinrich Rothdauscher (1851–1937) spent the years 1873 to 1883 working in drugstores in Manila, Cebu, and Vigan. He eventually finished writing an account of his experiences in a work entitled “Memoirs of a German Pharmacist” in 1932. Presented here is a translation of two chapters of a short expedition to the Cordilleras in 1878, which contain interesting literary, historical, and ethnographic elements. Keywords: Travel memoirs • German • PhiliPPines • The Cordilleras • ifuGao

Adaptive Strategies Of Parián Chinese: Fictive Kinship And Credit In Seventeenth-Century Manila, Joshua Kueh
Adaptive Strategies Of Parián Chinese: Fictive Kinship And Credit In Seventeenth-Century Manila, Joshua Kueh
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Based on a seventeenth-century baptismal book of the Parián, a 1689 list of debts owed to non-Catholic Chinese, and a 1690 membership list for gremios de sangleyes infieles, thisarticle argues that adaptation by the Chinese in Manila to secure themselves and their livelihoods followed two major strategies: (a) fictive kinship in the form of compadrazgo (coparenthood) and padrinazgo (godparenthood), and (b) extending credit. The Chinese used both strategies to create or solidify networks of mutual obligation and aid within their own community and with other residents of Manila. These strategies helped spin webs of interconnection that made colonial society stable …

The Changing Meanings Of Objects: Calatagan And Archaeological Research In The Philippines, Grace; University Baretto-Tesoro
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
As objects with a biography, artifacts—acquired by individuals or institutions, displayed in museums or privately appreciated—gain different meanings during production, acquisition, deposition in archaeological contexts, recovery, and analysis. Thisarticle examines the artifacts recovered from Calatagan, Philippines, to understand the layers and dynamic meanings of objects as commodities, mortuary goods, archaeological data, museum objects, and private collection items. It demonstrates the influence of archaeological practice in the Philippines on the interpretation of the Calatagan sites and artifacts. By understanding how meanings are produced, thisarticle illumines different contexts in which artifacts are utilized and create multiple experiences for people. Keywords: archaeology • meanings …

Gray Love The Career Of Gov. John Early In The Cordilleras, Shelton; Boise Woods
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Unlike the usual portrayals of racism of American colonial officials in the Philippines, thisarticle explores the career of John Early, a mid-level official who rose to become the governor of the Mountain Province in 1922 until his death in 1932. In 1911 he had served as lieutenant governor of Bontoc but was fired, according to his memoir, for defending the rights of the indigenous highlanders against unfair American colonials. Early’s rather unorthodox rise in the colonial government included actions that at times appear to contradict the prevailing thoughts of the day. Thearticle asserts the complex nature of human motives. Keywords: American …

Postcolonial Fissures And The Contingent Nation An Antinationalist Critique Of Philippine Historiography, Lisandro E. Claudio
Postcolonial Fissures And The Contingent Nation An Antinationalist Critique Of Philippine Historiography, Lisandro E. Claudio
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Thisarticle examines instances in Philippine historiography where nationalism, as a unitary end, has been used to elide and obscure class difference. It begins with a partial explanation of the lacunae in antinationalist thinking in the Philippines, and then proceeds to a critique of contemporary nationalist historiography. Using historians Zeus Salazar and Reynaldo Ileto as case studies, it examines how nationalist historiography can serve as means to implicitly justify localized acts of class oppression. The works of these scholars, while crucial in forwarding critiques of colonialism and neocolonialism, privilege nationalist unity over thorough examinations of disjunctures produced by class difference.
The Spaces Of Southeast Asian Scholarship, Resil B. Mojares
The Spaces Of Southeast Asian Scholarship, Resil B. Mojares
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
This professorial address argues that the genealogy of Southeast Asian studies must be traced to the work carried out by Southeast Asians themselves in the context of the practice and formation of local or national scholarship. The argument is illustrated by the historical formation of what can be called “Southeast Asian studies” in the Philippines. The paper was a keynote address that was read at the conference on “Engaging the Classics in Malay and Southeast Asian Studies,” Singapore, 17–18 June 2010, sponsored by the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies and the National University of Singapore’s Department of Malay Studies.

The Dolor’S Traslacion Ritual As Conflict And Compromise, Ramon Felipe Sarmiento
The Dolor’S Traslacion Ritual As Conflict And Compromise, Ramon Felipe Sarmiento
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Thisarticle traces the history and meaning of the traslacion or ritualtransfer of the Marian image Dolor in Catanduanes province betweenthe origin village and the parish center. In the course of the twentiethcentury, the location of the image and the control of its devotion have been contested. The ritual first emerged as a compromise between advocates of popular and institutional devotional forms, which eventuated in the fullblown religious procession at present. However, the persistent struggle between the parish center and the village has made the traslacion into an arena for enacting power and the politics of place. Keywords: ritualization • religion • …
