Dynamic Storytelling Algorithms Using Contextual Aspects Of A Large Language Model, Alireza Pasha Nouri
Dynamic Storytelling Algorithms Using Contextual Aspects Of A Large Language Model, Alireza Pasha Nouri
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Storytelling is a set of algorithms used to create narratives by connecting documents in a sequencethat accurately reflects the evolution of events and entities within a particular topic or theme. Early storytelling algorithms face challenges in encoding the progression and interconnections of information between consecutive texts, given that the conventional approaches rely primarily on connecting document pairs based on content overlap. They often neglect critical linguistic features, such as word contexts, semantics, the roles words play across different documents, and attention to the historical contexts of the underlying documents. Many existing storytelling models frequently produce story chains that, while connected …
Becoming A Bilingual Teacher On The Border: Developing Ideological Clarity At A Hispanic-Serving Institution, Laura J. Salazar
Becoming A Bilingual Teacher On The Border: Developing Ideological Clarity At A Hispanic-Serving Institution, Laura J. Salazar
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
As teacher education programs encourage more candidates to pursue bilingual certification, a need exists to improve the ways that preservice teachers (PSTs) are prepared to teach in bilingual classrooms. Research suggests the importance of preparing PSTs in the area of linguistic ideological clarity. Scholars define ideological clarity as an ongoing process through which individuals can critically consider their ideological orientations as well as dominant ideologies that favor those in power, with an aim of becoming agents of change through this process (Alfaro & Bartolomé, 2017). This case study sought to understand the opportunities that bilingual PSTs have to develop ideological …

Teacher Language Ideologies Concerning The Reclassification Of Emergent Bilingual Students: Navigating The Levels Of Power In Reclassification, Claudia Cabrera
Teacher Language Ideologies Concerning The Reclassification Of Emergent Bilingual Students: Navigating The Levels Of Power In Reclassification, Claudia Cabrera
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Reclassification is a crucial educational student outcome when a school system determines that a student is English proficient and ready for mainstream instruction without language support services (Umansky et al., 2020). This study examined the relationship between crucial and complex language ideologies of dual language teachers and the reclassification of emergent bilingual students1.. Language ideologies were the theoretical framework for the study through which the voices of dual language teachers were captured. The analysis of data sources, including teacher interviews, classroom observations and evidence of biliteracy development, helped to understand and reveal how dual language teachers navigate the dynamics of …
Towards A Model Of The Mapping Between English And Spanish Prosody, Jonathan Avila
Towards A Model Of The Mapping Between English And Spanish Prosody, Jonathan Avila
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Current speech-to-speech translation systems face challenges in effectively translating the nuances of prosody, which plays a pivotal role in conveying speaker intent and stance in dialog. This limitation restricts cross-lingual communication, especially in situations demanding deeper interpersonal understanding. To address this, this research delves into the relationships between prosody and its pragmatic functions, in English and Spanish. First, I discuss a data collection protocol in which bilingual speakers re-enact utterances from an earlier conversation in their other language, then describe an English-Spanish corpus, consisting of 3816 matched utterance pairs. Second, I describe a prosodic dissimilarity metric based on Euclidean distance …

Non-Native English-Speaking Teachers' (Nnests) Identities And Ideologies On The U.S.-Mexico Border: A Case Study, Gonzalo Hugo Favela Camacho
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
With a world population of 7.8 billion people, English language learners' number 1.5 billion, globally (British Council, 2019). This requires a substantial English language teaching force. Notably, 80 percent of the estimated 15 million English teachers worldwide are Non-Native English-Speaking Teachers (NNESTs). Despite the demand for English language education, anti-NNEST stereotypes persist, challenging the prevalent belief that native speakers are inherently superior language instructors, regardless of their educational backgrounds. This study, grounded in the LangCrit theoretical framework (Crump, 2014), employs a qualitative case study research design to explore the professional experiences, identities, and language ideologies of five NNESTs in a …

The Impact Of Language Proficiency, Attention, And Working Memory On Situational Model Updating, Omar Carrasco
The Impact Of Language Proficiency, Attention, And Working Memory On Situational Model Updating, Omar Carrasco
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
When individuals read a narrative text, they construct a mental representation known as a situational model to comprehend the unfolding story. These models require updates at meaningful changes in the story to reflect current information accurately. Existing research highlights the attentional and working memory demands of these updating mechanisms. Surprisingly, there is a lack of exploration into the role of language proficiency in these processes. In this study, bilingual English and Spanish speakers read narratives depicting everyday activities in their dominant and non-dominant languages and intermittently performed a recognition task related to character or spatial information. The use of bilingual …

Findings were analyzed using a discourse analysis approach that highlights the meaning making of student experiences and their …
Increasing The Efficiency And Accuracy Of Collective Intelligence Methods For Image Classification, Md Mahmudulla Hassan
Increasing The Efficiency And Accuracy Of Collective Intelligence Methods For Image Classification, Md Mahmudulla Hassan
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Collective intelligence has emerged as a powerful methodology for annotating and classifying challenging data that pose difficulties for automated classifiers. It works by leveraging the concept of "wisdom of the crowds" which approximates a ground truth after aggregating experts' feedback and filtering out noise. However, challenges arise when certain applications, such as medical image classification, security threat detection, and financial fraud detection, demand accurate and reliable data annotation. The unreliability of experts due to inconsistent expertise and competencies, coupled with the associated cost and time-consuming judgment extraction, presents additional challenges.
Input aggregation is the process of consolidating and combining multiple …

Follow The Court: Examining Judicial Homestyle Through Extrajudicial Communications On State Court Twitter, Cayleb Bryant Stives
Follow The Court: Examining Judicial Homestyle Through Extrajudicial Communications On State Court Twitter, Cayleb Bryant Stives
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
While institutional legitimacy can arise from multiple sources, much of the theorizing about courts has been developed for the federal judiciary, often specifically the US Supreme Court. My research recognizes that the connection between the public and judges on state courts is significantly more nuanced, and in many instances, direct. Notably, social networking sites like Twitter have quickly become a favored communication platform for fostering personal connections between political elites and their intended audiences. It is within these parasocial relationships I argue that favorable perceptions can be reinforced, bolstering the legitimacy of political actors and the institutions they represent. This …
Double Tense Marking In L1 Spanish Speakers/L2 English Learners, Vianney Zuniga
Double Tense Marking In L1 Spanish Speakers/L2 English Learners, Vianney Zuniga
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The present study examines the effects of Form Focused Instruction plus corrective feedback on "double-tense marking" (Al-Makatrah et al. ,2017; Cancino et al. 1967) in past tense negative statements and wh-questions among advanced L2 English speakers (Candry, 2013). These are learners who have reached the fourth stage of sentential negation, having acquired the auxiliary "do" and inflecting it in the past tense producing "did". Some advanced L1 Spanish speaking English learners inflect the verbs in structures in which the auxiliary "do" is already inflected for the past tense as in:
1. "I didn't knew about chemistry"
2. "When did he …

A Cultural Approach To Environmental Ethics: Milton, Nietzsche, And Indian Philosophy, Kenneth Lee Koenemann
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The aim of this M.A. thesis is to explore the way in which cultural factors have influenced humankind's relationship with the natural world, including plant life, animal life, and the ecology of planet Earth as a whole. While quantitative, scientific analysis provides objective evidence of global climate change that is being propelled by human activity, I argue that the religious and philosophical beliefs of individuals and societies has played, continues to play, and will continue to play an indelible role in the way in which humans consider other humans and the natural world at large. I focus primarily on Western …
Power Transition Theory And The Determinants Of Regional Integration Agreement Accession And Exit, James Langford
Power Transition Theory And The Determinants Of Regional Integration Agreement Accession And Exit, James Langford
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
While the phenomenon of regional integration has been paid substantial attention, the question of what causes states to accede to or exit from regional integration agreements (RIAs) has not. I draw from power transition theory to explain membership in RIAs, hypothesizing that states accede to an RIA when there is a high level of both power preponderance and status quo satisfaction, and exit when the levels of those variables are both low. I employ large-N quantitive analysis to test my two hypotheses. I find weak support for the hypothesis on RIA exit and offer concluding remarks on what the results …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Exceling in formal education is one way to improve a personâ??s social mobility and life chances (McMahaon & Oketch, 2013). However, there is a long line of educational inequity in the United States from the founding of the nation to the present. People of color and minorities have fought long and hard for educational equity, with the most effective approaches being grassroots mobilization and court battles (Lopez & Burciaga, 2014). This includes examples such as California schools denying entrance to Chinese American children to enter schools based on their ancestry in the 1800s; the arrest of Margaret Douglass for teaching …
On The Predictability Of Appropriate Prosody Of Dialog Markers Directly From The Local Context, Anindita Nath
On The Predictability Of Appropriate Prosody Of Dialog Markers Directly From The Local Context, Anindita Nath
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Today's state-of-the-art spoken dialog systems lack context-appropriate prosody in their responses, often making them sound unnatural. Better modeling of this contextual dependency would enable natural prosodic responsiveness. Accordingly, this dissertation explores the extent to which the prosody of a dialog marker can be predicted directly from the prosody of its local context. The prediction performance was evaluated in terms of the similarity between the predicted and the observed prosodic features as measured by the reduction of root mean square error from the baseline. This prediction task was accomplished for multiple combinations of various sets of context features and different machine …

Ceo Political Ideology And Risk Factor Disclosure, Jiwoo Seo
Ceo Political Ideology And Risk Factor Disclosure, Jiwoo Seo
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
I examine whether and how CEO political ideology affects risk factor disclosure. Since 2005, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has required U.S. firms to disclose risk factors in their 10-K filings. While prior studies document that this required disclosure increases the information content of financial reports, there is limited evidence on how Chief Executive Officer (CEO) personality traits influence risk factor disclosure. In this paper, I focus on CEOs' political ideology to proxy for their personality traits. Using CEOs' personal political contributions data to capture their political ideology, I find that firms with Republican-leaning CEOs provide less risk factor …

Mental Illness And Substance Use Disorder (Sud) Among Pregnant And Postpartum Women In A Women's Residential Treatment Center In El Paso, Texas, Adren Darius Warling
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Background: Substance use disorders (SUDs) and opioid use disorders (OUDs) are a major public health concern in the United States. SUD/OUDs are often linked to co-occurring physical disorders and serious mental illness (SMI). Stress and trauma are often contributing factors to the development of SUD/OUD and/or co-occurring SMI, which impact pregnant and postpartum women (PPW), who concurrently, may face specific risk factors and barriers to care for these conditions. These risk factors and barriers to care may be exacerbated by Hispanic/Latino identities. Studying social determinants of health based on a social ecological model approach can help increase knowledge about this …

Phylogenetics And Integrative Taxonomy Of African Water Snakes (Squamata: Colubridae: Grayia), Teslin Chaney
Phylogenetics And Integrative Taxonomy Of African Water Snakes (Squamata: Colubridae: Grayia), Teslin Chaney
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Grayia is a genus of relatively large (1.5 - 2.5 m) aquatic Afrotropical snakes. Recent molecular phylogenies recovered Grayia in its own distinct subfamily (Grayiinae), which was strongly supported as the sister group to Colubrinae. Because tropical African snakes are generally understudied, the relationships within Grayia are poorly known. Due to high degrees of intra- and interspecies variation, identification is often difficult and previous studies involving Grayia included misidentified specimens in other genera. The goal of this study is to create a phylogenetic tree that can be used to understand the relationships and taxonomy of Grayia via an integrative taxonomic …
Intra-Ethnic Sociocultural Factors Affecting The Educational Experiences Of Transnational Populations Of Latin American Origin In The Borderlands, Selfa Chew
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This research explores transnational capitals affecting the educational experiences of populations of Latin American origin in the borderlands, using a qualitative methodology: testimonios. Several schools of thought, including Critical Pedagogy, Critical Race, Latina/o Critical, and Marxist theories direct this examination of heterogeneous educational experiences and outcomes in Latinx populations. This study concludes that the educational path of Latinx students is determined in part by different forms of tangible and intangible capitals, held by students and their families in their countries of origin, transferable across borders, and operating through intersectional systems of oppression. Using Marxist theoretical frameworks, including Bourdieuâ??s theory of …
Ethics-Related Cheap Talk In 10-Ks, Sedat Erdogan
Ethics-Related Cheap Talk In 10-Ks, Sedat Erdogan
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
In this study, I investigate the existence of direct ethics-related cheap talk in 10-Ks. Firms can utilize ethics-related language in 10-Ks to emphasize the importance of ethics or ethical behaviors. Direct ethics-related language in corporate financial disclosures may increase the stakeholdersâ?? expectation that firms act ethically. However, ethics-related language in 10-Ks shows cheap talk characteristics since it is qualitative, unaudited, not binding, and not costly to generate. As a result, firms may increase the extent of direct ethics-related language in 10-Ks to obfuscate corporate financial disclosures to confuse stakeholders. I focus on regulatory and financial pressure sources to understand ethics-related …
