The Bonds Of A Common Faith: Catholicism, Marriage, And The Making Of Borders In Nineteenth-Century Paso Del Norte, Jamie Matthew Starling
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The Roman Catholic Church occupied a central place in life in the U.S.-Mexican borderlands as it governed interpersonal relationships, marriage, and family law from the Spanish colonial period until the 1860s and 1870s. This project examines the role of this church in Paso del Norte (present-day Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua and El Paso, Texas) as a social institution that regulated domestic life against the backdrop of dramatic political, economic, cultural, and ecological transformations. The central sources for this study are the marriage records of the Parish of Guadalupe. This church emerged as a Franciscan Mission for the indigenous Manso people in …
Phonological Memory Associations Of Language Impairment In Bilingual Children, Marcela Susa
Phonological Memory Associations Of Language Impairment In Bilingual Children, Marcela Susa
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Knowledge-based assessments of language impairments have been found to contain bias for assessing performance in bilingual children from diverse cultural backgrounds. As an alternative, measures related to performance of phonological working memory are becoming more popular for bilingual children. The purpose of the current study was to investigate how bilingual children with language impairment (BILI) would perform on nonword repetition and sentence repetition when compared to typically developing peers (BITD). Also, the current study investigated the extent to which the nonword repetition task and sentence repetition task were associated with each other in bilingual (English-Spanish) children. Results demonstrated that typically …

Guerreras Sitiadas: Ansiedades De Género En Dos Obras Del Siglo De Oro, Daniel Alfredo Vega
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
On The Selection Of Prosodic Features For Language Modeling, Alejandro Vega
On The Selection Of Prosodic Features For Language Modeling, Alejandro Vega
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Previous studies show that immediate and long range prosodic context provide benecial information when applied to a language model. However, the fact that some features provide more information to the prediction task should be considered. If the information contribution of each feature can be determined, then a well-crafted feature set can be built to improve the performance of a language model. In this study, I measure the contribution of dierent prosodic features to a baseline trigram model. Using this information, it should be possible to build a language model that uses the most informative resources and ultimately performs better than …

Asl Versus Gestures: Mothers Promotion Of Manual Communication With Their Children, Vanessa Michelle Arreola
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Using ASL and/or gestures has been found to facilitate verbal language in hearing children and has become a new area of interest among researchers. Because socioeconomic status plays a role in behaviors and language development, this study was designed to target individuals from low socioeconomic backgrounds in the hopes of finding whether ASL or gestures were used more by their children, whether mothers are capable of promoting the use of ASL in the home environment, and whether ASL or gestures was preferred more by the mothers. Mothers were taught ASL signs based on the MacArthur Communicative Index and gestures in …

PREFACE
"so much depends upon
a red wheel barrow
glazed with rain water
beside the white chickens."
-W. C. Williams
The Big Green Mama-mind-fuck Machine was born in a debris field of violence, of conflict. I write mostly from an autobiographical place and a debris field is the perfect way to describe the careful stitching together of my experiences, taking a memory and extracting the emotional boom it left behind. I take the piece and spin it in zero gravity, carefully examining it. For this reason, writing an Ars Poetica without "I" would be an impossibility for me. So, after …

The Effects Of Defendant And Juror Language Use On Sentencing Recommendations, Victoria Christine Estrada
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Spanish-language testimony is an extra-legal variable not widely studied in the legal psychology field. More emphasis has been placed on the translation of the testimony as well as accent attitudes. The current study extended research conducted by Stephan and Stephan (1986) to investigate the impact of Spanish-speaking defendants and mock-juror's language use and proficiency on sentencing recommendations. Two hundred and seventy-seven participants from the University of Texas at El Paso read a case vignette of a first-degree aggravated assault and asked were asked to provide sentence recommendations for the defendant. The defendant's testimony was presented in English or Spanish with …

There is a strong perception of the physicality of disabilities. The review of literature in this project shows that there is a large number of disability related studies in the field of communication that focus primarily on physical and/or visible disabilities. The purpose of this study is to incorporate research on hidden and/or invisible disabilities, specifically deafness. The literature in the field of communication relating to hidden disabilities is limited and much more limited in deaf related research. There are an estimated two thousand deaf individuals in El Paso. Their participation and integration in the community is hindered by societal …

Bilingual Homonym Disambiguation At The Discourse Level, Yvette Aguilar Baca
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of global context and local context on the time course of activation of cognate homonyms for bilingual readers. Of interest was whether meaning frequency, context, and cross-language activation modulated the time course of activation of the subordinate meaning of cognate homonyms. Also, whether the subordinate bias effect would be altered or even eliminated by the combined influence of such contextual factors and cross-language activation. Eye movements of Spanish-English bilinguals were measured using an eye-tracking device while they read English paragraphs. The paragraphs contained cognate homonyms (e.g. novel/novela), cognate non-homonyms (e.g. …

The Border Mural In The Electronic Age: Xican@ Literacy As Rhetorical Agency, José Angel Maldonado
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The Border Mural in the Electronic Age is a project that responds to blanket statements, not only about a people's literacy (or illiteracy), but to the ways in which we define and measure literacy in the electronic age. In this study, literacy is located on the US-México border, and this specific location serves as the social, political, and economic grounds on which to study the types of literacies used by the local population. A cultural ecology approach is necessary when studying niche literacies, and in today's world, traditional literacies coexist among emergent forms of literacy most likely attributed to technological …

Principles Of Thomas Pynchon's Literary Realities, Ira Anthony Walker
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Thomas Pynchon's literature is unique in subject and style. Postmodern by definition, Pynchon illustrates physics as a societal metaphor; Guy Debord's text The Society of the Spectacle suggests that these societal, literary, metaphors constitute and/or lead to a Spectacle. Through the analysis of an unpublished text: Minstrel Island, an early written short story: "Entropy," and a short novel: The Crying of Lot 49 the reader is capable of seeing a developing theme of physics as metaphor constituting multiple Spectacles. The narrative devices offered by Thomas Pynchon become Spectacular in nature and reflect the characteristics and environment of the tumultuous 1960s …

Modal Past Tense: An Applied Linguistics Approach, Whitney R. L. Krause
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This paper investigates the ways in which English employs non-temporal past tense morphology to convey a modal meaning (modal past) and then applies this analysis to the development of English language pedagogy. I have endeavored to produce an account of modal past which is based in the scientific principles of linguistics while also remaining accessible to practitioners such as language teachers. I argue that modal past is an element of the Universal Grammar of human language, and - following the Full Transfer / Full Access Hypothesis of Second Language Acquisition - that all students have inherent access to this principle, …

The Mind And Metaphysics Of Agency, Gareth Fuller
The Mind And Metaphysics Of Agency, Gareth Fuller
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
In this thesis, I try to spell out what it is to be a human agent. I start by defending an account of agency which I call the cognitive account. The cognitive account of agency holds that there are certain mental capabilities that are required to determine what is an action of the agent and what is not. This then leads into a discussion of intentionality, where I defend a functionalist account of intentional realism. After this I discuss how actions and events are individuated leading into a discussion of what it is to do something intentionally. This relies heavily …

Enterprise Transformation Through A Zachman-Bayesian Framework To Improve Efficiency & Productivity, Ramakanth Gona
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Although organizations are aware of the benefits of enterprise architectures models, organizations have difficulties determining deficiencies in their business architecture. Organizational assessment tools often do not achieve expectations as sold to management. Performance measures often fail to properly represent necessary holistic measurements. Methods for capturing deficiencies in current business models and deterring improvements to optimize business processes are rare. This thesis develops a new experimental architecture modeling approach for enterprise transformations. The approach is efficient in capturing deficiencies and finding correlations which can become targeted goals for improvements. The Zachman enterprise architecture framework provides a holistic view of organizational models …

Literatura Y Política En La Crónica Modernistas De Manuel Gutiérrez Nájera, Azucena Hernandez-Ramirez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
