The Effects Of Instigation, Anger, And Emotion Regulation On Intimate Partner Violence Related Behaviors: Examination Of The Perfect Storm Theory, Erica Lynn Birkley Jan 2015

The Effects Of Instigation, Anger, And Emotion Regulation On Intimate Partner Violence Related Behaviors: Examination Of The Perfect Storm Theory, Erica Lynn Birkley

Open Access Dissertations

The present study was an empirical evaluation of I³ “perfect storm” theory (“I-Cubed”;Finkel & Eckhardt, 2013; Finkel, 2014), in which the interactive risk processes of instigation, emotion regulation, and trait anger were examined in the prediction of intimate partner violence (IPV) related behaviors. In a 2 X 4 between subjects design, a sample of college undergraduates (N = 180) with a history of IPV were randomly assigned to use 1 of 4 emotion regulation strategies (cognitive reappraisal, distraction, suppression, or no instruction) while listening to either a anger arousing (instigation) or neutral (no instigation) imagined relationship scenario presented using the …

Adaptive Memory: Animacy And The Method Of Loci, Janell R. Blunt Jan 2015

Adaptive Memory: Animacy And The Method Of Loci, Janell R. Blunt

Open Access Dissertations

A functionalist approach to cognition assumes that people’s minds are tuned to process and remember information that benefits our survival or reproduction (Nairne, 2005). One source of information with potentially high fitness value is things that are alive and animate (Nairne, VanArsdall, Pandeirada, Cogdill, & LeBreton, 2013). The purpose of this dissertation was to explore the effects of using an ancient mnemonic – the method of loci – to examine memory for animate objects. Across four experiments, subjects used the method of loci to remember a list of animate or inanimate objects. I manipulated animacy by using animate or inanimate …

Due to increasing number of immigrant and international students, examining factors that contribute to this population’s well-being is of outmost importance. The purpose of this study is to examine the role of bicultural self-efficacy in the relationship between cognitive-affective factors of emotional intelligence (EI) and ambiguity tolerance (AT) and psychological well-being. Immigrant and international students (N = 176) completed measures of Bicultural Self-Efficacy Scale (BSES; David, Okazaki, & Saw, 2009), Trait-Meta Mood Scale (TMMS; Salovey, Mayer, Goldman, Turvey, & Palfai, 1995), Multiple Stimulus Types Ambiguity Tolerance Scale-II (MSTAT-II; McLain, 2009), and Psychological Well-Being Scale (PWBS; Ryff, 1989). The following hypotheses …

Selection Versus Rejection: The Role Of Task Framing In Decision Making, Jing Chen Jan 2015

Selection Versus Rejection: The Role Of Task Framing In Decision Making, Jing Chen

Open Access Dissertations

Procedure invariance is a basic assumption of rational theories of choice, however, it has been shown to be violated: Different response modes, or task frames, sometimes reveal opposite preferences. This study focused on selection and rejection task frames, involving a unique type of problem with enriched and impoverished options, which has led to conflicting findings and theoretical explanations. On the one hand, greater preference has been found for the enriched option in the selection task than in the rejection task; this result is explained by a compatibility account, in which the positive features of the enriched option are more compatible …

Without question, racial and ethnic minority groups are playing more significant roles in American society. However, there still remains a lack of diversity within the STEM workforce, especially within agricultural sciences disciplines. More problematic is the fact that low numbers of African Americans are employed in the agricultural sciences workforce. This study extends the use of Social Cognitive Career Theory by exploring how person, contextual and cognitive factors interplay to influence the career goals and career exploratory behaviors of African American college students pursuing STEM-intensive agricultural sciences majors. Instruments were selected to measure various components of the SCCT framework, focusing …

Exploring The Constitutive And Social Processes Of Ethics In Multidisciplinary Engineering Design Teams, Megan Kenny Feister Jan 2015

Exploring The Constitutive And Social Processes Of Ethics In Multidisciplinary Engineering Design Teams, Megan Kenny Feister

Open Access Dissertations

This study seeks to examine the communicative constitution of ethics in team-based design projects in an engineering education context. Engineering and design work involve complex social processes and ethical decision-making activities and collaboration (Bucciarelli, 2010). The understanding and development of ethics in future engineers is a primary concern for engineering educators, students, and the governing bodies that oversee this field (ABET, 2013; NAE, 2012). Specifically, given the highly fluid and subjective nature of ethics and the complications of the team-based context, challenges arise about how to move beyond codes and standards that are intended to guide ethical conduct (ASEE, 2012; …

Characterizing Enabling Innovations And Enabling Thinking, Freddy Solis Jan 2015

Characterizing Enabling Innovations And Enabling Thinking, Freddy Solis

Open Access Dissertations

The pursuit of innovation is engrained throughout society whether in business via the introduction of offerings, non-profits in their mission-driven initiatives, universities and agencies in their drive for discoveries and inventions, or governments in their desire to improve the quality of life of their citizens. Yet, despite these pursuits, innovations with long-lasting, significant impact represent an infrequent outcome in most domains. The seemingly random nature of these results stems, in part, from the definitions of innovation and the models based on such definitions. Although there is debate on this topic, a comprehensive and pragmatic perspective developed in this work defines …

The Relationship Between Acoustic Features Of Second Language Speech And Listener Evaluation Of Speech Quality, Mengxi Lin Jan 2015

The Relationship Between Acoustic Features Of Second Language Speech And Listener Evaluation Of Speech Quality, Mengxi Lin

Open Access Dissertations

Second language (L2) speech is typically less fluent than native speech, and differs from it phonetically. While the speech of some L2 English speakers seems to be easily understood by native listeners despite the presence of a foreign accent, other L2 speech seems to be more demanding, such that listeners must expend considerable effort in order to understand it. One reason for this increased difficulty may simply be the speaker’s pronunciation accuracy or phonetic intelligibility. If a L2 speaker’s pronunciations of English sounds differ sufficiently from the sounds that native listeners expect, these differences may force native listeners to work …

Open Access Dissertations

The publication of Don Quixote (1605, 1615) impacted significantly the dynamics of Western literature. The renowned novel, which builds upon a considerable number of characters and episodes, is considered one of the most read and most analyzed pieces of literature in the world. This novel opens a wide platform for socio-political criticism, religious and cultural discussions, and literary analyses. For these reasons, critics read and study, and writers mention and imitate Cervantes’ novel up until today. A multitude of significant novels written by a variety of eminent authors share characteristics with Don Quixote, and thus become “quixotic.”

Exploring Perceived Communicative Competence In Upper-Level L1 And L2 Interactions In Higher Education, Heejung Kwon

Open Access Dissertations

The present study explores how university-level second language learners of English prepare themselves for professional worlds in English-speaking environments in a North American context. I specifically look at how upper-level L2 students (second language learners) identify their needs and negotiate miscommunications and preconceived notions of L2 learners in various communicative events in the process of developing communicative competence (Canale & Swain, 1980; Hymes, 1972) and planning for their future careers. I also investigate how L1 English speakers (native speakers of English) form perceptions of L2 English speakers and negotiate miscommunications and misunderstandings while engaging in collaborative projects. Using ethnographic approaches …

The Experience Of Men After Miscarriage, Stephanie Dianne Rose Jan 2015

The Experience Of Men After Miscarriage, Stephanie Dianne Rose

Open Access Dissertations

Miscarriage is a relatively common event that occurs in approximately 15 to 20 percent of identified pregnancies (Maker & Ogden, 2003). Men and women often view miscarriage as a real and meaningful loss (Johnson & Puddifoot, 1996; McCreight, 2004). The vast majority of research focused on the experience of miscarriage has emphasized the feelings, thoughts, and behaviors of women (Conway & Russell, 2000; McCreight, 2004). However, minimal research exists focused on men’s experience after miscarriage (Rinehart & Kiselica, 2010). The present phenomenological study examined the experience of men after miscarriage including aspects such as responses (e.g., emotions and behaviors), coping, …

Dietary And Exercise Effects On Neural Responses To Visual Food Stimuli In Overweight And Obese Adults, Richard Sayer Jan 2015

Dietary And Exercise Effects On Neural Responses To Visual Food Stimuli In Overweight And Obese Adults, Richard Sayer

Open Access Dissertations

Results from human neuroimaging studies consistently demonstrate that obesity is associated with altered neural reward processing of food-relevant cues. These observations have caused some investigators to question whether behavioral interventions such as dietary manipulations or physical activity might modulate processing of food cues in reward-related brain regions. The use of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure neural responses to visual food stimuli is a commonly utilized paradigm for assessing neural reward responses relating to ingestive behavior of foods in humans. Using this study design, limited evidence suggests that increases in dietary protein and participation in acute and chronic aerobic …

Race. Nation. Zombie: Imperial Masculinities Gazing At The Undead, Adryan Glasgow Jan 2015

Race. Nation. Zombie: Imperial Masculinities Gazing At The Undead, Adryan Glasgow

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation argues that zombie narratives have always been about white masculinity and that colonialism is the true living dead monster. The zombie is not the load-bearing signifier in these stories. It is the white men who act as representatives of empire that embody tropes and evolve. This dissertation examines the survivor masculinity in zombie films over time to see how hegemonic masculinity has adapted to a range of national crises. I argue that the failure of white masculinities in these films and novel is rooted in the limited ways of knowing inherent in the Imperial Gaze. Starting in the …

Habit Formation In A Rodent Model Of Alcoholism: Genetic Susceptibility, Alcohol-Specific Effects, And Pharmacological Manipulation, David Scott O'Tousa Jan 2015

Habit Formation In A Rodent Model Of Alcoholism: Genetic Susceptibility, Alcohol-Specific Effects, And Pharmacological Manipulation, David Scott O'Tousa

Open Access Dissertations

Habit formation is a well-characterized process involving a shift from response-outcome as the leading driving force underlying action to a stimulus-response mechanistic process. It is hypothesized that a transition from goal-directed behavior to habitual behavior is driven by a transition of the bulk of cognitive load from neocortical toward lower neurological mechanisms. While many neurotransmitter systems have a demonstrated involvement in this process, the dopamine system is particularly implicated. Habit formation is assessed through the maintenance of extinction responding for an undesired, or devalued, outcome.

The Secret History Of The English Spy: 1674-1800, Slaney Chadwick Ross

Open Access Dissertations

This project traces the emergence of the spy in the literature of the eighteenth century, arguing for spying's ideological transition within the cultural and literary imagination from a profession to a way of being. At stake in "The Secret History of the English Spy: 1674-1800" is the idea that surveillance, spying, and state secrecy inform and meaningfully intersect with eighteenth century narrative fiction. Through analysis of a variety of surveillance fictions, including spy narratives, financial tell-alls, periodicals, amatory secret histories, and domestic and Gothic fictions, I incorporate the idea of surveillance into eighteenth-century literary history in order to more thoroughly …
