At Home In The Diaspora: Domesticity And Nationalism In Postwar And Contemporary Caribbean-British Fiction, Kim Caroline Evelyn
At Home In The Diaspora: Domesticity And Nationalism In Postwar And Contemporary Caribbean-British Fiction, Kim Caroline Evelyn
Open Access Dissertations
This project investigates the ways in which home is conceptualized and represented in sixty years of the literature of the Caribbean diaspora in Britain by balancing texts from the post-World War II period with contemporary texts and considering how the diaspora has been imagined and reimagined. Making a home of a diaspora—typically considered as a collection of scattered and ostracized migrants— requires a conceptual leap, act of agency, and, sometimes, a flight of imagination. Through the imagery of domesticity and the rhetoric of nationalism, literary analyses of representations of diaspora allow us to explore the imagined constructs of diasporic homes. …
Interpersonal Physiology: Assessing Interpersonal Relationships Through Physiology, Richard Vincent Palumbo
Interpersonal Physiology: Assessing Interpersonal Relationships Through Physiology, Richard Vincent Palumbo
Open Access Dissertations
Interpersonal physiology is the study of relationships between people’s physiological activates during social interactions. Converging evidence indicates that interdependencies develop between peoples’ autonomic systems, and can be indicative of psychosocial constructs such as empathy and attachment. These interdependencies, often referred to as physiological linkage, are theorized to be key components of social process. Research in the area is limited however, and there is little consensus for best practices. The mechanisms involved in the emergence of linkage, terminology, and methodology and statistics have not been adequately addressed. This dissertation aimed to systematically address these issues through four manuscripts. The first addresses …
Predicting Co-Relapse Among Nutrition And Exercise From Adolescence Through Young Adulthood, Kristina Monteiro
Predicting Co-Relapse Among Nutrition And Exercise From Adolescence Through Young Adulthood, Kristina Monteiro
Open Access Dissertations
Despite significant public health efforts, obesity remains a stagnant outcome comprised of multiple health behaviors including fruit and vegetable intake (FV) and physical activity (PA). Existing research has provided correlates of FV and PA behaviors over development, with secular trends towards acquiring negative health behaviors (e.g., sedentary behaviors). This study examined demographic and dynamic predictors of FV and PA regression at one-year post-intervention within three samples including middle school, high school, and college. Regression is defined using the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) as being in Action or Maintenance at baseline and regressing to a pre-Action stage at one-year follow-up. The novel …
Examining Health Professional Students’ Attitudes On Interprofessional Education, Suzanne Carr
Examining Health Professional Students’ Attitudes On Interprofessional Education, Suzanne Carr
Open Access Dissertations
There is a growing need for healthcare teams to effectively collaborate and communicate to improve patient outcomes. The need to improve patient care has been well established and cited by the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) Committee on Quality Health Care in America landmark report, To Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System (IOM, 1999; Kohn, Corrigan, & Donaldson, 2000). Health educational programs are known to be a gateway to changing behaviors of health professionals to impact practice and direct patient care. Interprofessional Education (IPE) has been identified as a viable mechanism to increase the collaboration and communication of health …

Middle School Students’ Perceptions Of Enjoyment In Physical Education And Its Relationship To Participation In Physical Activity Outside The School, Shima Younes-Alhourani
Open Access Dissertations
For many years, the status of physical education (PE) in public schools in Palestine as well as other countries was jeopardized. However, the decline of engagement in PE and the reduction and/or elimination of PE programs in the US and other countries including Palestine, along with the increased obesity and sedentary behaviors among children, have motivated governments in countries like Canada, the United States and England to take action (Cairney et al., 2007; & Qualifications and Curriculum Development Agency, 2007). Students in the United States and other countries, including Palestine, tend to demonstrate negative attitudes toward physical education (PE) at …
Bridging The Soft-Skill Gap From Education To Employment Through Internships, Kim Stack Washor
Bridging The Soft-Skill Gap From Education To Employment Through Internships, Kim Stack Washor
Open Access Dissertations
Employers express a growing concern that recent college graduates do not possess the necessary soft-skills to transition into entry level positions seamlessly. Educators are asked by employers and policy makers to provide instruction which would develop student skills in both the “hard” (academic and technical) and “soft” (personality traits and habits) skills required to be workplace-ready. The research study was designed to understand the degree to which internships enhance student soft-skill development, specifically in the areas of communication, teamwork, initiative, and, analytical thinking. Researcher-designed pre-post retrospective surveys were administered to students and one to corresponding supervisors to measure change in …

Exploring The Sociocultural Pathway Model As It Predicts Body Satisfacion In Athletes And Nonathletes, Sarah Howes-Masnik
Open Access Dissertations
This study was a secondary data analysis in which the sociocultural pathway model (Stice & Agras, 1998) was tested in male and female athletes and nonathletes. There were three primary purposes for this study. The first aim was to test the applicability of the sociocultural model theory in the current sample by conducting confirmatory factor analyses on the measurement constructs. The second aim was to create a structural equation model that fit the data best according to theoretical directionality of the constructs in the sociocultural theory. The third aim was to compare the predictive paths of this model across sexes …
Temperance In The Age Of Feeling: Sensibility, Pedagogy, And Poetry In The Eighteenth Century, Sarah Hattie Maitland
Temperance In The Age Of Feeling: Sensibility, Pedagogy, And Poetry In The Eighteenth Century, Sarah Hattie Maitland
Open Access Dissertations
British Romanticism has traditionally been understood as participating in a narrative of progressive secularism. "Temperance in the Age of Feeling" seeks to challenge this narrative by examining the influence of temperance on Romantic conceptualizations of the relationship between sensation, thought, and feeling. I begin my argument by investigating Romantic notions of temperance as influenced by Book II of Spenser’s The Faerie Queene. I claim that Romantic temperance differs from classical temperance because Romantic temperance is concerned with balancing mental faculties while classical temperance is concerned with moderating passions. Next I consider how temperance influenced Romantic theories of the relationship …
A Meta-Analysis Of Prescription Stimulant Efficacy: Are Stimulants Neurocognitive Enhancers?, Marisa E. Marraccini
A Meta-Analysis Of Prescription Stimulant Efficacy: Are Stimulants Neurocognitive Enhancers?, Marisa E. Marraccini
Open Access Dissertations
Prescription stimulant use for neurocognitive enhancement is a significant problem among college students with and without ADHD. The primary reason students report misusing stimulant medication is to enhance academic functioning. Given that increasing numbers of students are misusing prescription stimulants, it is critical to explore whether empirical findings support neurocognitive benefits of prescription stimulants. Hence, the primary purpose of this meta-analytic study was to examine the potential effects of prescription stimulants on cognitive functioning of adults with and without ADHD. A systematic search and retrieval process resulted in the calculation of effect sizes from 91 studies. Fourteen meta-analyses were conducted …

Development And Psychometric Evaluation Of A Clinical Beliefs Questionnaire For Licensed Psychologists, Joseph F. Meyer Iii
Open Access Dissertations
In recent decades, a specific class of dubious clinical practices has been labeled pseudoscientific and highlighted as a growing area of concern in psychology. Experts have identified numerous examples of pseudoscientific treatments, which are troubling for various ethical reasons. In light of the absence of research investigating the nature of professional beliefs and knowledge associated with scientifically substantiated and unsubstantiated clinical interventions, the primary objective of this study was to develop a questionnaire (viz., the Clinical Attitudes and Knowledge Questionnaire, or CAKQ) to appraise specific clinical knowledge domains and attitudes toward science among licensed, doctoral-level practitioners of clinical psychology. This …

Synthetic Steganography: Methods For Generating And Detecting Covert Channels In Generated Media, Philip Carson Ritchey
Synthetic Steganography: Methods For Generating And Detecting Covert Channels In Generated Media, Philip Carson Ritchey
Open Access Dissertations
Issues of privacy in communication are becoming increasingly important. For many people and businesses, the use of strong cryptographic protocols is sufficient to protect their communications. However, the overt use of strong cryptography may be prohibited or individual entities may be prohibited from communicating directly. In these cases, a secure alternative to the overt use of strong cryptography is required. One promising alternative is to hide the use of cryptography by transforming ciphertext into innocuous-seeming messages to be transmitted in the clear. ^ In this dissertation, we consider the problem of synthetic steganography: generating and detecting covert channels in generated …
Intimacy And Autonomy: Twentieth Century American Women And The Quest For Self-Realization, Mary Florence Barford
Intimacy And Autonomy: Twentieth Century American Women And The Quest For Self-Realization, Mary Florence Barford
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation examines the effects of culturally managed gender expectations on intimate spaces. The study of these intimate spaces is rooted in the biographies of four relationships in the post-war period. Through exploration of these individual stories an understanding emerges of how monolithic cultural paradigms work for men and for women in very different ways. For purposes of archival availability and continuity, this dissertation focuses on a very specific group of people, namely women of great talent and ambition who were either married to or in a relationship with a man whose fame eclipsed her own. My question became how …

Social Relationships Between Staff And Youth In A Physical Activity-Based Positive Youth Development Program, Martha Lindley Mcdavid
Social Relationships Between Staff And Youth In A Physical Activity-Based Positive Youth Development Program, Martha Lindley Mcdavid
Open Access Dissertations
Positive youth development (PYD) programs offer enriching experiences that help young people discover and develop skills that will help them become productive, successful, and healthy adults (Damon, 2004; Lerner, von Eye, Lerner, & Lewin-Bizan, 2009). The social context within PYD programs serves as a mechanism in this process and program staff are often responsible for creating a social environment where youth feel safe and supported while participating in activities designed to foster growth (Benson, Scales, Hamilton, & Sesma, 2007; Larson, 2006). Basic psychological needs theory conceptualizes that staff-youth interactions will lead to well-being in youth to the degree that they …

Using Google Docs To Support Work Flow Management In Teams Of Engineering Students, Nataliia P. Perova-Mello
Using Google Docs To Support Work Flow Management In Teams Of Engineering Students, Nataliia P. Perova-Mello
Open Access Dissertations
The purpose of the present study was to investigate how teams of engineering students integrated Google Docs to support their workflow management process. ABET criteria dictate that engineering students need to learn how to work together and practice effective ways of communication. Learning how to work well as a team is linked to the development of positive interdependence, which is at the core of the cooperative learning model and is based on social interdependence theory. A “sink or swim together” attitude in students is an important component of a successful teamwork experience (Smith, 1996). One of the important aspects of …

Mental Health And Human Minds: Some Theoretical Criteria For Clinical Psychiatry, Natalia Washington
Mental Health And Human Minds: Some Theoretical Criteria For Clinical Psychiatry, Natalia Washington
Open Access Dissertations
When it comes to the topic of mental illness, there are three broad areas of concern that are of interest to all of us as human beings—and to the theorists, researchers, and clinicians who wish to offer help—besides knowing what our symptoms are. First, we might be interested in finding out some normative facts about ourselves as individuals, such as whether or not we are mentally healthy, perhaps to what extent, and how this should affect our motivations. A second area of concern involves descriptive facts our minds. In what ways do we deviate from typical human psychological nature, and …

Spanish-Speaking Immigrants In A U.S. Midwestern Community: An Exploration Of Attitudes Towards Spanish, Spanish In The U.S., Language Maintenance, And Bilingualism, Mara Raquel Barbosa
Open Access Dissertations
This study investigated Spanish-speaking immigrants’ attitudes towards Spanish, which includes the evaluative reactions that people have towards the language. One hundred participants living in three different cities in Indiana completed a background questionnaire, a language attitudes questionnaire, and a one-on-one interview about their attitudes towards Spanish. It is imperative to know about Spanish-speaking populations’ attitudes in states with lower numbers of Spanish-speaking immigrants like Indiana, because this knowledge helps to influence and make predictions about that language’s maintenance and shift in the community (Luo & Wiseman, 2000; Rivera-Mills, 2000); it guides language policy and planning and promotes language awareness (Pennycook, …
Enlightening Experts: The Effect Of Frames And Values On Expert Attitudes, Amelia Caron Andrews
Enlightening Experts: The Effect Of Frames And Values On Expert Attitudes, Amelia Caron Andrews
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation is an examination of the framing process among domain experts—that is, authorities in specific policy fields. Driving this inquiry is a seemingly simple argument: frames influence how experts use their values to evaluate framed policy issues. Issue frames lead experts to consider the appropriateness of the values and mental models guiding their domain-relevant choices, and to change their attitude to resolve cognitive dissonance. The quality of this change rests on their perception of the values that issue frames stress. Focusing on farmers’ tillage choices, I use a mixed method approach to test my expectations through a series of …
