Algorithms For Missing Data Replacement In Time Series Analysis, Suzanne M. Colby Jan 1996

Algorithms For Missing Data Replacement In Time Series Analysis, Suzanne M. Colby

Open Access Dissertations

Three simulation studies were conducted in order to compare the accuracy of two algorithms for estimating missing observations in time series data. Each study was designed to test the algorithms under conditions which are likely to occur in applied behavioral research: (1) Study 1 examined the effects of model misspecification on the accuracy of estimation; (2) Study 2 examined the effects of systematically missing data (versus randomly missing data) on estimation accuracy; (3) and Study 3 explored the accuracy of the algorithms under conditions of nonnormality in the data series. The two algorithms, the EM (Estimation Maximization) Algorithm and the …

The Influence Of Contemporary Music On Responses To Visually Presented Mainstream Sexually Explicit Images, Renee N. Saris

Open Access Dissertations

This study investigated the influence of contemporary music on young adults’ evaluations of and reponses to sexually explicit erotic, nonviolent pornographic and violent pornographic depictions. Two hundred and ninety-four women and men respondents were administered a survey to assess their experiences with various types of media, including their use of sexually explicit materials. Upon completion of the survey, respondents were exposed to one of three types of music primes (sexist rap, neutral rap, neutral rock/pop), and then viewed six sexually explicit slides (2 erotic, 2 nonviolent pornographic, 2 violent pornographic). Respondents were asked to evaluate each slide by means of …

Age Differences In Multidimensional Self-Concept, Erika Natalie Gardiner Jan 1996

Age Differences In Multidimensional Self-Concept, Erika Natalie Gardiner

Open Access Dissertations

Since James (1890) introduced the psychological importance of the self, researchers have continued to debate several issues concerning self-concept and self-esteem. This study examined the ratings of multiple domains of self-concept, the importance of those domains, ratings of general self-concept, and self-esteem of 691 students from a North East school district in grades 4, 8, and 12. Students were chosen to represent three developmental levels: preadolescence, early adolescence, and late adolescence. All students completed the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, a form of the Harter Self-Perception Profile and its accompanying importance ratings. Significant age and gender differences in the ratings were analyzed …

The Impact Of Breast Cancer On Women's Body Image And Sexual Functioning, Elayne Amy Saltzberg

Open Access Dissertations

This research examined the impact of breast cancer on body image and sexual functioning. Twenty women who underwent a mastectomy, twenty-one women who underwent a lumpectomy, and twenty-one women without personal history of breast disease or surgery completed measures of life experiences, marital satisfaction, body satisfaction, and sexual functioning. Data was both retrospective and prospective. The prospective data was collected in the form of daily diary ratings of body satisfaction and sexual functioning, which all participants completed for one month. Contrary to expectation, body satisfaction and sexual functioning did not differ between groups. For all groups, body satisfaction increased over …

Our Beloved Lizzie; Constructing An American Legend, Gabriela Schalow Adler Jan 1995

Our Beloved Lizzie; Constructing An American Legend, Gabriela Schalow Adler

Open Access Dissertations

Lizzie Borden is a legendary figure in American culture who, unlike some others, has not received much scholarly attention. Yet her story has generated a great number and variety of texts, and several performance pieces as well. New texts continue to be published. This body of work begs to be examined, so that insights may be gained into the interactions of popular literacies and narrative forms. The study of different textual treatments of the same subject allows us to trace issues of gender, class, family, the construction of subjectivity and the intersections of genre, narrative and history.

The theoretical approach …

A Transtheoretical Investigation Of Immoderate Drinking In College, Jeffrey Peter Migneault Jan 1995

A Transtheoretical Investigation Of Immoderate Drinking In College, Jeffrey Peter Migneault

Open Access Dissertations

Immoderate alcohol use is prevalent on college campuses and results in high levels of negative consequences including injury, social, academic, and occupational disruption, increased levels of sexually transmitted disease, and emotional complaint. This study applied the Transtheoretical Model of Change to immoderate alcohol use in a cross-sectional study of 629 college students. This model has proven useful as a tool of investigation of and intervention on many other health related behaviors.

The Transtheoretical Model is a model of intentional behavior change that is composed of five interrelated multi-dimensional constructs. This investigation developed measures of four of these constructs. Two measurement …

Measuring Stage Of Change For Exercise, Gabrielle Richards Reed Jan 1995

Measuring Stage Of Change For Exercise, Gabrielle Richards Reed

Open Access Dissertations

This project continues the development and refinement of the URICA-E2, an instrument to measure stage of change for regular exercise based on the Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change. In Study One, the URICA-E2, which is a proportionate measure of stage of change, was analyzed using Principal Component Analysis and refined into a 24-item instrument capturing not five, but six components of change: Precontemplation-Non Believer (PCN), Precontemplation-Believer (PCB), Contemplation (C), Preparation (P), Action (A), and Maintenance (M). The standardized scale scores from the URICA-E2 were clustered and seven profiles were found. They duplicated the six components and added a seventh which …

An Alternative School: An Alternative Solution, Elaine C. Lee

Open Access Dissertations

The increased incidence of violent behaviors by adolescents has had a significant impact on society. Because these behaviors are now being seen more frequently in school settings, the need for alternative forms of education has become apparent to administrators throughout the country.

The purpose of this study was to determine if an alternative high school program using Montessorian philosophy would enhance academic relevance, improve academic achievement, enhance social development, and improve the emotional well-being of the Socially and Enotionally Maladjusted adolescent.

The participants were 18 students diagnosed as Socially and Emotionally Maladjusted. The treatment group was comprised of 12 students …

Transcendence As A Human Response To Life Threatening Illness: Description And Understanding Through Narratives, Jane Williams Jan 1995

Transcendence As A Human Response To Life Threatening Illness: Description And Understanding Through Narratives, Jane Williams

Open Access Dissertations

This study explored the phenomenon of transcendence as it occurs in the context of life-threatening illness. Transcendence is a term that is frequently used to describe a patient's response to suffering, but it is an elusive, poorly understood phenomenon.

Narrative interviewing and analysis was the method. Participants diagnosed with terminal cancer provided personal accounts of their experience during in-depth interviews. Three participants were interviewed after being selected by professional nurses working in an oncology clinic as having transcended their illness. The linguistic approach to systematic study of the accounts

(Gee, 1985, 1986, 1991; Riessman, 1993) and the voice-centered relational method …

The Exercise And Self-Esteem Model: Inclusion Of Physical Acceptance In Tests Of Model Constructs, Raquel D. Pino Jan 1995

The Exercise And Self-Esteem Model: Inclusion Of Physical Acceptance In Tests Of Model Constructs, Raquel D. Pino

Open Access Dissertations

The present investigation examined the relationship between exercise and self-esteem in the context of the Exercise and Self-Esteem Model (EXSEM) (Sonstroem & Morgan, 1989). Physical acceptance and physical evaluation (competence), both at a general domain and a specific domain, were measured and included in tests of model constructs. The sample, comprised of fitness center members and university students (N = 526), completed a survey designed to assess exercise behavior and several self-perception variables. Using Structural Modeling Analysis, several models were examined and compared.

The Psychological Modulation Of The Immune System: A Meta-Analysis, Sara D. Cottrill Jan 1995

The Psychological Modulation Of The Immune System: A Meta-Analysis, Sara D. Cottrill

Open Access Dissertations

In the mid seventies, Robert Ader and Nicholas Cohen (1975) conducted and published a series of experiments that are generally recognized as a major turning point for the behavioral and physical sciences. In classical conditioning experiments, Ader and Cohen were able to weaken the immune system reaction against foreign material in rats. The experiments demonstrated that the "self-regulating and autonomous" immune system was vulnerable to behavioral factors. These experiments seemed to galvanize a community of scientists who had hypothesized like scientists and philosophers before them the role of emotional states in influencing physiological processes.

The preeminent discipline which has evolved …

Protective And Risk Factors For Adolescents In A Residential School Setting, Beth Joann Shaw Jan 1995

Protective And Risk Factors For Adolescents In A Residential School Setting, Beth Joann Shaw

Open Access Dissertations

Approximately 50% of all American children and adolescents are currently at risk for developing personal and social problems (Weissberg, 1990). As a nation, how are we responding to this situation? Under the large umbrella of educational reform one option being debated is removing at-risk children living in poverty from their homes and placing them in residential educational facilities. Despite the rhetoric being exchanged, little empirical evidence exists that directly investigates the effects of removing children and adolescents from their homes.

This study investigated the protective and risk factors associated with the resiliency, achievement, and adjustment of adolescents from low income …
