The Strontium Isotope Geochemistry Of The Cenozoic Ocean, Jennifer Hess
The Strontium Isotope Geochemistry Of The Cenozoic Ocean, Jennifer Hess

A detailed record of the 87Sr/86Sr variations in seawater over the last 100 Ma has been determined by measuring the 87Sr/86Sr of well-preserved and well-dated fossil foraminifera from twelve Deep Sea Drilling Project cores of overlapping ages. Diagenetic alteration of the sample foraminifera was evaluated in three ways: by Sr/Ca ratios, by pore water chemistry, and by visual examination under the scanning electron microscope. Age assessments were made on the basis of magnetobiostratigraphy.
Foraminiferal 87Sr/86Sr measurements show an almost continuous increase in the seawater 87Sr/86Sr from 0.70738 at 100 Ma to 0.70920 today. The …
Accumulation, Persistence, And Elimination Of Microbial Indicators By Molluscan Shellfish, William Burkhardt Iii
Accumulation, Persistence, And Elimination Of Microbial Indicators By Molluscan Shellfish, William Burkhardt Iii
Open Access Dissertations
The accumulation of fecal coliforms and several other indicator microorganisms (Escherichia coli, enterococci, Clostridium perfringens, and male-specific bacteriophage) by hard-shelled clams (Mercenaria mercenaria) was investigated with regard to season and temperature. Very high rates of accumulation were found for each of these indicator organisms during distinct periods in the spring. Uptake of indicators during these periods exceeded 2 SD of the mean annual accumulation rates. Except for these periods of 'hyper-accumulation', uptake of the indicators is at least partially temperature dependent. In general, bacteriophage and C. perfringens were accumulated by clams at significantly higher rates …
Modeling Vessel Mobility: The Gulf Of Mexico Shrimp Fleet, John Michael Ward
Modeling Vessel Mobility: The Gulf Of Mexico Shrimp Fleet, John Michael Ward
Open Access Dissertations
Given the heterogeneous nature of the fishing fleet and the complex behavior of vessels, the traditional marginalist supply models are not well suited for modelling vessel mobility. A discrete choice model is utilized in this analysis to predict the probability that a vessel will enter, exit, or remain in the Gulf of Mexico shrimp fishery based on a myopic profit maximization criteria. The multinomial legit model indicates that fisherman behavior in the Gulf of Mexico shrimp fishery is not influenced by stock variability. The crowding externality as represented by the size of the fishing fleet exhibited a strong negative impact …
Preconscious Factors In Romantic Attraction, Jay T. King
Preconscious Factors In Romantic Attraction, Jay T. King
Open Access Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to discover whether or not the character and or behavior of parents is a factor in the romantic attraction and mate selections made by adults. The study examined the correlation between the parent's temperament and the partners temperament under two different conditions. The first condition involved a comparison when the participants identified their parent as a nurturant parent. The second condition involved a comparison when the participants identified their parent as a person with whom they had a conflicted parent-adolescent relationship. Four predictions were tested based upon psychoanalytic and psychodynamic theory; 1) adults will …
Correlates Of Sibling Jealousy And Parental Favoritism, Catherine Gray Deering
Correlates Of Sibling Jealousy And Parental Favoritism, Catherine Gray Deering
Open Access Dissertations
This study explores selected situational, relationship, and personality variables in sibling jealousy among college students (n=320). The research is based on a blend of social psychological and family systems theory, building on recent advances in romantic jealousy research. Vignettes portraying sibling and parent-initiated comparison situations were used as a projective technique to elicit sibling jealousy. Results indicate that parent-initiated comparisons produced significantly more jealousy than simple sibling comparisons. Sibling-initiated jealousy was significantly higher in domains of higher relevance or importance to the sample. Comparisons in physical attractiveness, social competence, and athletic achievement produced the highest levels of sibling jealousy. More …

Optimization Of Ibuprofen Formulation: Molecular Pharmaceutics Of The Biologically Active Stereoisomer, Alain Joseph Romero
Optimization Of Ibuprofen Formulation: Molecular Pharmaceutics Of The Biologically Active Stereoisomer, Alain Joseph Romero
Open Access Dissertations
A program of experiments comparing the formulation of rac-ibuprofen to that of (-)-S-ibuprofen was performed. Early investigations revealed that although complying with the United States Pharmacopeia compendial standards five different sources of rac-ibuprofen had different processing characteristics and as a result variable biopharmaceutical properties. Crystal habits critically influenced processing parameters. It was possible to identify low and high liquid requirement powders for the wet granulation end- point. Further analysis of rac-ibuprofen crystals was performed during the different stages of tablet manufacture. Phase diagrams confirmed that rac-ibuprofen crystallizes preferentially in the monoclinic space P21 c group as a true racemate. It …
Optimization And Its Applications On Pharmaceutical Conventional And Extended Release Solid Dosage Forms, Hann Rong Chueh
Optimization And Its Applications On Pharmaceutical Conventional And Extended Release Solid Dosage Forms, Hann Rong Chueh
Open Access Dissertations
In the pharmaceutical industry, the product and process development problems usually involve a number of independent variables and are normally characterized by multiple objectives. Computer optimization techniques consisting of statistically valid experimental design can be employed to provide an economical way to obtain efficiently these multiple response parameters.
Acetaminophen is a poorly compressible analgesic and very large tablet with high dose level resulting in a corresponding very large table and poor compactability, the amount of added compressible excipient required to produce acceptable compaction behavior therefore is increased. Also, most commercially available high does (500 mg) acetaminophen tablets are manufactured from …

A Social Welfare Analysis Of Congestion And Water Quality Of Great Salt Pond, Black Island, Rhode Island, Kwo-Dong Wey
Open Access Dissertations
Great Salt Pond on Block Island, Rhode Island is a favorite site for recreational boaters in New England. However, overcrowding causes congestion and water pollution problems during summer. The Department of Environmental Management has closed the Pond to shellfishing every summer since 1986. Residents feels that recreational boaters are to blame and should take responsibility for controlling the problems. Recreational boaters, on the other hand, feel that they have already paid enough in docking and shellfishing license fees. The use of Pond is a source of conflict between these two groups.

A Biosurfactant Of Bacterial Origin And Its Characterization, Mohammed I. Al-Hazmi
Open Access Dissertations
A microorganism capable of synthesizing biosurfactant from cheap and renewable water-soluble substrate such as carbohydrate was isolated' from the environment in our laboratory. It was selected from other isolates by screening for its ability to reduce the tensiometric properties of the culture broth. The isolated organism (JIZAN-1) produced significant extracellular surfactant activity during growth in batch culture on modified mineral salts medium (MMSM) containing 0.2% glucose as a carbon source and 0.02% yeast extract as a growth cofactor. This was demonstrated by lowering of the whole broth surface tension to less than 27.0 dynes/cm and the interfacial tension to less …
