Reconciling The Impacts Of Tourism Development Within Communities, Lorin K. Toepper Jan 1991

Reconciling The Impacts Of Tourism Development Within Communities, Lorin K. Toepper

Open Access Dissertations

The growth and further development of the tourism industry at the community level often leads to more impacts than just the often-acknowledged jobs, wages, and tax revenues. Socio-cultural impacts such as crime and congestion are felt within the destination community. Similarly, environmental impacts such as erosion and the destruction of precious coral reefs also felt within the community. All of these impacts resulting from tourism influence the quality of life within tourism communities as well as influencing the quality of experiences gained by tourists to that community.

Tourism plays an important role in the economy of Block Island. It is …

Level Of Satisfaction And Commitment To A Decisional Choice As Mediated By Locus Of Control, Michael Anthony Surrette Jan 1991

Level Of Satisfaction And Commitment To A Decisional Choice As Mediated By Locus Of Control, Michael Anthony Surrette

Open Access Dissertations

The present study investigated the relationship between an increase in decisional choices and an individual's subsequent level of satisfaction and commitment with their choice. An individual's locus of control was also investigated as a mediating variable between decisional choice and satisfaction. Participants read a brief biographical scenario which described an individual's attempt to get accepted into graduate school. The scenario portrayed the individual getting accepted into either one, three, or five graduate programs from a list of ten. Participants were required to complete two measures of satisfaction (Job in General scale & Kunin's Faces Scale) and one measure of commitment …

The Physical Chemistry Of Atmospheric Iron And Its Geochemical Behavior In The Surface Waters Of The Open Ocean, Guoshun Zhuang Jan 1991

The Physical Chemistry Of Atmospheric Iron And Its Geochemical Behavior In The Surface Waters Of The Open Ocean, Guoshun Zhuang

Open Access Dissertations

The physical chemistry of atmospheric iron present in remote marine aerosols collected from over the North Pacific has been systematically studied. 90- 100% of iron present in remote marine aerosols is in the non-aluminosilicate form. The Fe(II) concentrations in remote marine aerosols has been determined for the first time, and more than 50% of the iron is present as Fe(II). Photochemical reduction, including sulfur or organic reductants, and the subsequent dissolution of iron are probably the dominant transformation mechanisms affecting atmospheric iron during its long range transport from Asia to the North Pacific. It is postulated that the key reaction …

Phosphorus Dynamics In The Parker River Estuary, Richard Chinman Jan 1991

Phosphorus Dynamics In The Parker River Estuary, Richard Chinman

Open Access Dissertations

In an estuary, characterized by biogeochemical reactions that affect the input, cycling, and removal of river-borne components, an understanding of the factors that regulate biomass and production of the estuarine ecosystem requires insight into the controls on phosphorus dynamics.

Phosphate, the principal dissolved phosphorus species in natural waters, interacts rapidly with an assortment of surfaces, being taken up by and released from inert particles through a complex series of sorption reactions. Phosphate is especially susceptible to adsorption on freshly precipitated or coagulated iron particles. A number of studies have documented the colloidal flocculation of filtrable iron in the low salinity …
